2002, can't believe I remember that year so vividly even though it was 21 years ago. The year prior 2001 didn't they play each other in the State Championship also in an Offensive thriller 3-0 final in favor of Chatard?

Yep.  Dilley was HC both of those years…Coach L took over in 2003.  Hard to believe Dilley is in his 10th year at Guerin.  For the record, they were all “Offensive thrillers” under Dilley and L….but effective.

Sagarin, MaxPreps, and CalPreps all agree that the top teams in 1A, 3A, and 4A are all better than the top team in 5A.

Kind of says it all about 5A doesn’t?

Frankly, most years as regards “true” 5A sized schools with the exception of Snider,  the 3A and 4A champs are likely better than the best 5A school.

I’d add that I have STRONG doubts as to either of the Bloomington teams being an actual top contender.  I expect the winner to come from the North…most likely Snider.

I recognize the Bloomington South team this year might be different from the South teams I have seen over the last 5-8 years when they played Circle City Conference teams but I always thought, personally, they were a little “spongy”.

  3. Curious, I know there are some Roncalli and Brebeuf guys floating around here, just how did that Brebeuf/Roncalli game go down?  I was pretty surprised by that one….and didn’t even catch it until just this morning.

As to Chatard, yeah, there’s a few nicks, bumps and bruises but hopefully everyone will eventually come around come playoff time.

BTW, good to see a @Cyoguru post.  It’s almost as rare a TW sighting these days.

I graduated from East Central in 2000. Still have some family members on the coaching staff and the team. So what still follow them. When I graduated from college I moved to Carmel. Started coaching CYO when my son was in 3rd grade and moved up every year with him through 8th grade last year. So I’ve seen pretty much all the Indy CYO teams a few times. Barnabas and St. Mike were the two dominant teams in our age. All the Barnabas kids go to Roncalli and apparently most of the St Mike kids went to Chatard this year. Barnabas also had a good class the year above my son along with St Roch being pretty good. So I’d expect Roncalli to have some pretty good classes and Chatard to be really strong. Trust me, when the current freshmen are seniors, Chatard will have a Mr. Football candidate at running back.

So that’s how I ended up as a dual East Central/Northside Catholic School guy.

Nice to meet you.  Myself - EIAC Champs in ‘77 via the now defunct Brookville HS Greyhounds (probably never going to fully sign on to a team named Wildcats carrying the blue and white of hated KY).  I still cheer for the EIAC teams through playoffs…although I spent a lot of time nursing wounds from Dick Meador teams back in the day.  Indianapolis via Butler and Chatard via marrying a Catholic girl from Brookville….add a lot of CYO coaching along the way as well.  That said, I do wish the folks back home had a little more tolerance for us “cheatin’ Catholics”.

Question  - Of those 16 titles, have all been in 2A-3A?

The only 3A team that has, so far, won the 4A State Championship is Evansville Memorial.  They have done it once.  Unfortunately, 4A is not the pushover for bumped 3A teams that 5A has proven to be for 4A teams that have been bumped up.

Every time Chatard has been bumped it’s either ran into a Roncalli team on the rise (since the IHSAA insists on putting all the Catholics in the same sectional if at all possible) or a team like New Pal in Regional when they began their run a few years back…so Chatard continues get get knocked back down to 3A.

Now, if the IHSAA just wasn’t so “cute” about those Sectional pairings….

  6. I have a hard time predicting the easy win some seem to think this is going to be for Chatard.  I recall hearing similar predictions for the game with Roncalli….from Roncalli folks in some cases.  It obviously didn’t turn out that way.

I do think @Just a dad has summarized the team fairly well, though.  I also agree with @FastpacedO that the defense has been buying time for the offense to gel….hopefully much like they came together over the course of last season.

I can’t help but notice @tango’s cautionary remark about what happened the last time Chatard beat Cathedral and Roncalli the same year (and Guerin) - they got absolutely mauled by Memorial in Semistate.  Just a few years prior, the last time Chatard beat Cathedral, Roncalli and Guerin they were also beat up badly by Ritter (who lost at State to Luers) led by Jake Purichia and a bevy of great receivers and backs.

@Boiler Boog has mentioned some underclassmen for Chatard which, admittedly, do look pretty good but, clearly, this team is going to achieve or fail on the strength of its upperclassmen.  I have to admit, though, I’m curious as heck regarding @Boiler Boog’s background in that he can be behind both an Indy Catholic (I’m giving Brebeuf the benefit of the doubt in that reference) and yet have some EIAC in him.   Sounds like I path I walk/walked…

  7. Looks pretty legit.  Westfield had to be moved up….I am, though, having a little question in my mind about Ben Davis at the moment.

I have to admit being a little exasperated at Carmel (who might not even be 13th).  I’ve oft considered them to be the public school version of Cathedral (which is not entirely intended as a compliment but, rather, just an observation) and, frankly, just how a school that is literally multiples in size larger than most everyone else they play, having, not just abundant but rather excessive human capital, coaching capital and real life, well, ……..capital - doesn’t find itself most every year comfortably ensconced well within the Top 5 year in and out seems terribly underwhelming on their part.  That school has more resources than most D3 colleges…and a Helluva lot more students.

Good call on moving up Roncalli in my opinion.  Young and improving…I think they are legit in 4A (without being able to unlock the the “riddle wrapped in a mystery wrapped in an enigma” that is the closed conference 4A SIAC teams until they come boiling out of the South) but, unfortunately, have the potential East Central Mount Everest to overcome.

Northwood has been outscored 59-21 in the last 5 quarters of football. It’s laughable that it was a few weeks ago that people were saying we were a favorite to go to Indy.

Yeah…on that crazy Facebook page some Dad was talking about how Northwood was going to take East Central apart at LOS just a couple of weeks ago,

  9. Maybe…..it’s been discussed at more length elsewhere here, though.  EC is very much the favorite but besides Reitz and Memorial, Roncalli and New Pal have a potential shot as well.  The winner in the South likely takes home all the marbles….like they generally have over the last several years.

  10. Columbus North    3

    Chatard                  28

    Final

Kind of a trap game for Chatard what with Saturday and Monday lost for practice to much of the team because of the 2-day Cathedral game and the JV game pushed back to  Monday.  CN played better than the score seems to show.  Seemed to be a pretty young team.
