Third graders with dull crayons can figure out how wrong that statement is.

The 3 high schools that merged in 1970-'71 to form Owen Valley were Patricksburg, Gosport, and Spencer. Freedom and Coal City were Owen County high schools that had closed previously in the mid-60's. Quincy High School in Owen County burned in the 50's--but that is part of Cloverdale school district now.

This one might. In the early days of Owen Valley football (early 70's), they didn't have a playable field. They played their home games at Cloverdale. A few years later, they finally got a field built, and had a huge crowd and big ceremonies for the opening night field dedication game. The lead trumpet player marched out to midfield, mic-ed up, to solo the Star Spangled Banner. He missed two of the first three notes, paused, and muttered an "aww F#$@" heard clearly over the loud speakers, before playing flawlessly the rest of the way. Took it almost 50 years to drop to the second best night in OV football history.

And one of the advantages currently is you can see a great game each week of the playoffs. I took a carload to Mier last week to watch Guerin/Oak Hill, and a little less than a carload to watch the nut-buster at Owen Valley last night. You seed it, we'd likely stay home the first two weeks.

Cascade lost their good running back to a broken leg last week. They have some other weapons, but it's not the same. Southmont is pretty physical, I think they will hang with Linton for a good while before succumbing.

Just a quick synopsis as I remember it--the IHSAA was sued by South Bend St Joseph's players because they had failed to make the tournament after going unbeaten two straight regular seasons during the point system qualifier. St Joe lost their case, but the IHSAA went to the cluster system to avoid further litigation from other unbeaten teams. Instead, Catholic Schools in Marion County sued over discrimination due to their cluster grouping, since the IHSAA put five Catholic schools in the same AA sectional (Ritter, Brebeuf, Scecina, Chatard, Cathedral), IHSAA won that lawsuit also, but the cluster was widely despised after year one's results. (Looked this up)--eight 9-1 teams didn't make the playoffs the first cluster year, a dozen 8-2 teams were left out also. Scheduling was a mess, consequently big gates were lost, and conferences were wrecked. Amzie Miller at New Prairie hated the cluster, and was the driving force behind the all-in playoff. The schools overwhelmingly voted in favor of the all-in. The school vote in Northwest Indiana's District 1 was 40-0 in favor of the all-in playoff. The state's other four district's votes were not unanimous, but overwhelmingly in favor also.

I really wouldn't know--you'd have to individually ask the other state's associations. But if I was guessing, I would imagine that there are some who have toyed with the notion of an all-inclusive tournament, but the logistics plus the time constraint of the sport seasons make it non-feasible.

Can't like this one enough. It's supposed to be education-based athletics. And whether you get straight A's or straight F's during the year, you still take a final exam.

Missouri's high school football tournament is all-in. There are a few basketball state tournaments that are all-in beside ours.

I really didnt have time to look at much of that. I did look at West Vigo in '85--Crawfordsville did the dirty work the week before beating Zionsville, 2-0. Sagarin had Zionsville ranked 18th including all classes--then West Vigo came back from 17 down in the last 10 minutes to beat Crawfordsville the following week. I did look to see if a sectional couldnt possibly have had a winner in the top half of Sagarin, I think the one Rockville won was that way, but that was the only one I recall.

Had a couple hours this afternoon, so I worked up sectional champions (and beyond) between 1985 (start of the all-in tournament) and 1999, that were in the bottom half of the Sagarin Ratings in their respective class at the end of that regular season. In other words, these are the teams that would not have made a tournament had the field been cut in half by Sagarin Ratings before the tournament started. Class A usually had less than 64 teams in class, which alters things a bit. There could well be a few schools I missed here, but I don't think many. It wasn't OT, but a handful of years ago, South Putnam's stud running back got ejected in the season finale @ Cascade, and the IHSAA played Sgt. Schultz and let him play in the sectional opener at West Washington. Weird stuff happens down there.

There was a sectional game some years back where the defense had a pick six in overtime, and the officials screwed it up, and allowed it to stand for the win.

Stevens got hurt against Mooresville—didn’t appear that bad at the time, but I’m pretty certain it ended up being a season-ender.

Maybe he had time to read some old newspaper articles detailing what Ev. Memorial “friends of their program” got caught doing in the 80’s and 90’s.

The observer program has always been a good idea, but unless things have changed the last few years, it’s pretty inconsequential. A guy I used to work basketball with told me about three years ago that he was the only IHSAA football observer south of Marion County….and he wasn’t very far south. At that rate, stripes in the south could expect to be observed once every 10 years or so.

Thanks. I didn’t think what they did could be right. After a lengthy discussion, they marked off 15 back from the line of scrimmage for the face mask, then 15 forward for the roughing, and gave Danville the ball 1st and 10.
