Bobref
Kudos to LS for stepping up and scheduling this perennial small school power. Marion Local has won 14 state championships, including last season’s Div. VII title. We’ve seen big schools like Cathedral and Center Grove scheduling out of state powerhouses, but it’s great to see a small school with that mentality. I’m actually thinking about taking this one in. Harrell’s site says the game will be the 23rd, but does not list a starting time. I know we’ve got Linton people on here. How about some insight on the game, this edition of the Miners, etc.?
Basementbias
Much respect to Linton as they seemed to be our Flying Jets southern twin. However, Marion Local isn't too far from us. Been a fan or should say I root for them to represent the area at state on the Ohio side. They have been tremendous over the years. Will be interesting to see what the result will be. Leaning toward the Flyers just because of their track record.
blockdownkickout2718
I'm also interested in some insight on this. Surely Minerpride has some info?? Also, this thread led me to check out their schedule. I saw Phalen Academy as their week 9? Think I got that spelling right. No hyperlink on Harrell's site, so does this mean they are out of state as well? Not heard of this school. I think they will be just fine. They've went around Ohio playing bigger schools to get good competition. Doing the same here. They embrace challenges & difficult places to play. Should be a great game.
WarriorFootball82
Linton has Oliver and a good cast around him. They did lose a few key lineman, but they should still be fine. Oliver is a great player and his father is a good coach. I think they will be fine!

Dave
Marion Local is out of the MAC, I've had the pleasure of watching several of the teams out of the MAC play. It's a powerhouse small school conference (divisions 5,6, and 7. Sometimes going into division 4.) The MAC schedule prepares these teams for the playoffs, the conference as a whole will almost always play for a state title, and i have seen them win 2 or 3 titles in one year. Marion Local is usually at the top of the conference. Coldwater is also a powerhouse, playing Kokomo several years back beating them 42-6 if I remember correctly. I know nothing of Litton except they will have their hands full. I did run it through CalPreps, showed 42-0 and 58-0 on a neutral field, Marion Local. But it the first game of the season, I wish both teams a good and healthy game.

Miner_Pride
well.... I know Linton has wanted to beef up the schedule for years....and it's getting harder to find opponents.... with no disrespect to Phalen.... that is a useless game for us. last year we brought in St.Theresa from Decatur IL... and that was a heck of a game.... This year.... well... I think we know what we are getting in to. This is the type of team and community that is hard to root against. Back to back to back state titles in Div VIII Ohio. 14 state championships starting in 2000.... the most in Ohio. Current 48 game winning streak---longest in Nation. 66 players on roster from a school of 286... 18 seniors 32 total upperclass. They have 53 kids on their junior high roster. Check out this NY Times article posts on the pro football hall of fame page https://www.profootballhof.com/news/2019/12/how-one-ohio-town-keeps-football-thriving/ Not only have they won the last 3 VIII titles and who knows if they might have won in 2020 (covid).. but they also had a state title streak from 2011-12-13-14, runner up in 15, won again in 16 and 17... runner up in 18... then won again in 19... 20 was covid.. and the've reeled off the last 3. That's an incredible run. I don't have stats on the Flyers... just watched what I can. They look to be deep and have just 4 maybe 5 2-way players. Return QB Justin Knouff at 6'2 185 and tremendous skill guys in Drew Lause 6'0 205 Victor Hoelscher 6'2 180 and Griffin Bruns 6'0 175. They lost a RB who was player of the game in the final last year... but PArker Hess 5'11 185 looks solid..and with lead blocking from FB Ethan Heitkamp 5'10 190.. they are powerful. Up front....starts with center Colten Ahrens at 6;3 220, left side with Winner at 6;185 G and Muhlenkamp 6;4 240 at T... the on the right Grieshop 6'4 250 and Kinkler 6'3 196. Winner and Muhlenkamp both play DE on the D. Speaking of which... they ended their year with with 3 shutouts....we're talking playoffs... allowed 1 TD in last 6 games. allowed 1 TD or less in 13 of their 16 games. And I'll throw in that their return game is potent... seems like I've seen 4 or 5 punt and kickoff returns end up TDs... so that's something to watch. in short.... they are damn good...and deserve the accolades and ranking of #1 in VIII in ohio.. and I think got a rank of #10 overall in state... For my Miners. We got players. We return alot talent... I mean... having 3 players on the all state class 2A preseason defense is pretty cool. I think defense will be our strongpoint at this point until the offense can catch up. We did return Paul Oliver 6'4 215.. still just a junior, at QB... 1,164 yrds rushing last year with 17 TDs. WB Jesse Voigtschild 5'7 165 is back for his senior year (941 yrds rush in 23). But we graduated some stellar experienced linemen, two of which headed to play in college. Tonight will see the inaugural start and 1st genuine varsity appearances at Center, guard and tackle for 3 Miners, and a couple others that will get rotation as well. At least a couple are gonna have to grow up quick tonight. Unfortunately we lost a couple kids in addition to graduation that transfered....both starting spots, and that creates a depth issue in some cases... but 6'2 250 senior HAnk Gennicks along with 6'3 215 Corey Andrews will anchor the line and be the focus I'm sure of defenses. We also lost both FBs TO graduation but feel good with 6'2 185 Russell Goodman back there... he doubles at ILB. He missed a lot of 2023 after leading the team in tackles as a freshman. The passing game has to be more of a factor in 2024. it accounted for 74.33 per game last year. SE is the one spot we have depth at even with starter Cooper SMith 6'2 175 moving to WB with Voigtschild. 6'3 170 hayden Felter returns.... He and Cooper combined for 19 catches last year. BRaylon McBrde 5'9 165 senior and 5'9 155 Collin Webster will both be out at SE... McBride could see QB snaps... WIll Oliver have time to throw will be the question against a very stout Flyer D. LInton is down to 40 players on the roster this year. There are only 6 seniors, and 11 new freshman faces. The big class is the 16 juniors. A game like this is a monster test for week 1. For years Linton's week 1 was a yearly heavy one sided affair that saw the bench clear and starters in street clothes by 4th quarter. Other than seeing live action and oiling the machine a bit... nothing really gained in that. When we had Southridge for 4 years... it was a much much better scenario for us. The Raiders were and always are a tough opponent. I was glad we finally got a single W in our last meeting and miss playing them. St. Therese was coming off a state championship in Illiinois last year, and it was a dog fight that saw Linton win...and set the impetus for a great year. Marion Local is driving a good 3 hours plus and I am sure they will want to show everyone what they are all about. We will have some areas where we need to see how kids react. But regardless of the outcome, it will be a learning experience for sure... and with a very tough Monrovia on deck...a long road trip to Western.. .and Greencastle and Boonville after than.... we will need to solidify and keep healthy to reach the post season with momentum! Bobref
I knew Linton would be game … but I suspected this would be the outcome. Marion Local showed why they came into this game with a 48 game winning streak - longest in the nation - and were 3 time defending state champs in Ohio. 42-0 at halftime. Final 45-6. Miner_Pride
Yeah... it was a challenge... I think we all knew that going in. 18 seniors...almost all going 1 way... but... I'll say we had a chance.. they drove initial drive 74 yards to score but had to work for it. We then started at our 7, converted 3 third downs, and go to their 37. We missed a wide open receiver that could have tied things... then failed on a 4th and 8. Then the bottom fell out. Next play 63 yard bomb to a wide open receiver. We had melted down on the coverage. All downhill from there. Int's fumble.. blocked punt... just one thing after another. They all put the Flyers deep in Miner territory, and blamo before you knew anything were were down 42-0. They scored on the half's final play as well. Add to it... starting QB/OLB Paul Oliver is hurt on a scramble near the end of the half as well. Shoulder injury that kept him on sidelines 2nd half.. but I'm told it was precautionary. Kudos to Marion Local tho... they didn't play a starter in the 2nd half. Starters would have certainly rolled in a couple or more scores. And I think they could have passed at will. We couldn't get to the QB at all. We did OK against their rush. ended up with a late score for us that felt good...and kept their 2nd's out of the endzone. YOu always look for the positives... but even more you learn the negatives. Look who gives up... who seizes an opportunity. I'm sure this week was gut check time with Monrovia next up... whom gotta be the best non ranked 2A school out there (!!!).... WB Jessie Voigtschild stood out... 90+ yards... ran hard to the bitter end... and ILB Corey Andews seemed to be in on every tackle.... it will be an interesting week. Nothing but praise for Marion.... they nearly filled the visitor stands.... nearly 4 hour drive. I saw no ridiculous dances or overly celebration... just hand the ball to the ref with some handshakes.. and to the sideline. I really like that program and wish them well on their quest for 4th straight title in Ohio. As much as it pained me to watch my Miners get humbled.... it is still better than pummeling someone 73-6 year in and out. Other than letting every kid get to play... there's nothing to be gained but a W,,,,

Basementbias
If only we could have those Marion Local, St. Henry, Coldwater, and even Ft. Recovery families head west/northwest to Jay County & Adams County. Just some of the size at WR & etc would be nice. Spread the wealth from Mercer County a bit lol.
