temptation Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 Ignored these stats for a while because I follow the larger classes more closely but anyone ever seen anything like this? Averaging 48 per game yet giving up 43? 83 points in one game, total of 148? Three games with an over of 120 points? Has to be approaching some sort of unofficial state record, no? Nuts! 1 Quote
Boiler Boog Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 I’ve watched all their games. Pound for pound, they probably have the best offense in the state. The last two games they have scored a TD on every drive (except for kneel downs on the last drive). The two games where they scored under 30 were because one game got called at half due to lightning (tri west) and the other was played in a monsoon (Roncalli). And it’s not like they are playing cupcakes or small teams. They have played the largest school in the state, another 6A team, two 5A teams, Chatard, Roncalli, and two 3a teams. The offense is unreal. This is while being one of the smallest teams in 4A. That being said, we might have the worst defense in 4A. Part of the problem is we just don’t have a ton of players. The roster is like 60 guys. Of that, about 25 are freshmen. The biggest problem is there are only like 6 juniors on the team. So the defense starts 4 sophomores and has very little depth. We also don’t have a very big d line, so it’s pretty easy to run on us. If Brebeuf just had a mediocre defense, they’d be the best team in 4A. If they had an average defense, they’d be unbeatable in 4A. Unfortunately they don’t but they still have a chance. It basically boils down to if they can get a turnover or two each game. If they can luck into a couple turnovers, the offense can usually win it for them. It also helps that their special teams aren’t that great so they don’t even bother with field goals or punts (unless it’s really deep in their territory). So they go into each drive with the mindset of having 4 plays to get a first down. Quote

Alduflux Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 Brebeuf is 3-1 when giving up 57 points or more. 2 Quote

Yes but I’m not sure it would even matter. It’s not like we make stops early in the game when people are fresh then fall apart later. We get scored on all game. I really think the biggest problem is we have basically no juniors. The varsity starters are pretty much all seniors and sophomores. Most of the sophomores could use another year to develop and would be able to if we had a normal size junior class. But we have a lot of guys who go thrown into the fire by necessity (especially on defense). It’s pretty telling for me because my son dresses both varsity and JV. We don’t have a freshmen team because we don’t have enough for both a JV and freshman team. That’s because we don’t have many juniors so sophomores play up and freshmen play JV. When we played Chatards JV team, they had about 45 players (keep in mind they have a freshmen team as well). When we played Geurin they had about 45 players on the JV team (they don’t have a freshman team). We have about 25 guys on the JV team. We don’t have a lot of “big guys” so the ones we have play oline and not dline. I wish we had better numbers because that would really help us. Quote

Most of the Brebeuf games have been going an hour or so longer than the average games because of all the scoring and associated clock stoppages for extra points and kickoffs. I usually check in on this website during games and I’ll see people posting final scores and we will just be starting the 3rd quarter. That happened in the Guerin and Bloomington south game as well. I know it was after midnight when we got home from both of those games. Quote
