Jason Delaney has been the Cathedral hoops coach since 2017 & was the HC at Tech from 2012-16. Tech won state in 2014. Cathedral won state in 2022. Maybe the basketball-brothers initial denial was more about Coach Delaney than Cathedral. It seems like Delaney has (rightly) earned the reputation of being a HC who benefits from (recruits) D1-talent transferring in from surrounding schools to win a whole lot of basketball games.

Don't bring Jason into the conversation.  He's in a different situation at Cathedral.  And I'm proud to be a "you guy!"

Why not??? I have no idea if Cathedral basketball or Cathedral overall receives a lot of incoming transfers. All I am saying is that the IHSAA should (if they are not doing so already) track transfers by school / program / coach in order to spot potential outliers.

Nah not really. Mt Vernon has a D1 kid committed to Purdue (Luke Ertel who lives in Lawrence Township and attended CYO grade school in Indianapolis) and would have been a very formidable contender this year had these two brothers not transferred out. Mt Vernon also had a kid a few years back (Jake Davis Mercer/now at Illinois) elect to go to Cathedral after attending Mt Vernon schools K-8. Pete Werner also attended Mt. Vernon his freshman/sophomore year before transferring to Cathedral way back when. Think Mt. Vernon is simply sick of losing kids to Cathedral and this move by the principal was a future deterrent.

That's cool....I respect your view.  I just struggle with your comment that he is not afraid to take on a hard story and tries to find the truth....in most cases, as an column guy, much of his work is opinion based, and his opinions align with his personal beliefs.  That being said, I am not saying he is wrong in this particular case.  Glad it worked out for the kids.

There is more to the story. Not going to share it publicly, but Doyel is only telling half of it.

I've dealt with Doyel firsthand. He went on a fishing expedition for a "hot take" story that was 100% ground in falsehood and rumor, I (along with a couple of other people) was able to head him off and get him to not run with his story. The Caitlin Clark moment he had this spring was not unusual for him. He tries to make himself the story. 

There are a lot of really good, professional columnists around. We've had a few in Indiana - Bob Kravitz in Indy, Ben Smith in Fort Wayne, Mike Lopresti is back writing for some statewide newspapers after his long stint at USA Today. You can have an opinion while researching and telling all sides of the story and present it. Doyel just goes straight for whatever hot take opinion will generate the most clicks.
