Vegas says Notre Dame is the fourth best team in the country, I'm sorry, I'm probably rolling with that

I’d be careful using Vegas odds as a measure of actual strength of a team. Those odds are developed, not to predict outcomes, but to encourage gambling. The odds are based on the oddsmakers’ prediction of how the money will come in, not on the likely outcome of the game. In reality, Vegas odds and point spreads are designed to generate equal money on either side of a wager. That eliminates the risk to the house, regardless of the outcome.

Still not sure there's a better measure. Again, try competing with Vegas monetarily over the long haul. You'll probably lose.

FWIW, Sagarin has ND a 2 TD favorite over BYU on a neutral field. Of course, that’s based on both teams playing at full strength.

Shame will never know.....purely hypothetical....until the 2026 regular season I guess.  ESPN clearly had a significant gap in their SOS.   They did have ND with a higher FPI.

If Vegas doesn't count, why don't we rely on the CFPS committee to handicap the games instead. There's a reason it's hard to win money betting games consistently. No one does it better than Vegas.

If Vegas says Notre Dame is the fourth best team in the country, I'm sorry, I'm probably rolling with that. It's in line with what I've seen from Notre Dame over the last couple of months.

Absolutely you will...its the narrative you desire.  Had Vegas painted a different picture, you wouldn't be mentioning them.

No, no. Vegas kicks my tail anytime I go against them. If they said Notre Dame was the 13th best team, I'd take that pretty serious.

Keep discounting the 2 losses to teams that were 7 and 10 seeds in the CFP yet even though you lost to 2 of the lower ranked teams, the Irish are miraculously a top 3 seed? How the Hell does that make sense?

The committee's rankings mean nothing to me. They don't know anymore than the casual fan. For the record, I have a ton of respect for Miami. They had some sort of mid-season crisis, but they are playing at the top of their game right now. I think they could beat anyone in the SEC.

I'm not going to continue repeating myself like a broken record as to why I think ND is Top 3.

It’s nonsensical. Look, win one of those games that you lost and I am with you 23, but you lost both games, including one at home. No way you are a top 3 team this year, no way. I think the Irish should have been in over Alabama 100%, screw the overrated SEC. I see the Irish around 8 or 9 as a seed.

That's fair. I'm not saying Notre Dame is deserving of a 3 seed by any means. Two losses are two losses. I'm with you, I see them as 8+ based on their resume. I just agree with a lot of football experts that Notre Dame is one of the best 5 teams the way they are playing right now.

2 starting interior linemen and top 2 RBs have declared for the NFL. What are the odds they would have played in the Pop Tarts Bowl?  I don’t want my franchise QB playing in an exhibition game in late December behind a makeshift O-line and without his running game. And his backup is going to the portal, so that’s not an option. Business decision.

Forgot Eli Raridon, starting TE, declared for the draft.

Amazing how much knowledge the committee would have possessed had they selected ND over Miami….😆

I'd still either consider them idiots or bought by ESPN. Both Miami and Notre Dame should have been in over Alabama. For me, this was never about Miami, it was always Alabama. The SEC is barely a step up from the ACC, five teams getting in is a total sham.

Yep, SEC getting 5 teams is totally based on ESPN owning the CFP.

Don’t get me wrong, I believe the SEC has significant influence over the CFP entity that is owned by all ten conferences and Notre Dame, but that influence comes from the perception of the SEC and the fear that Greg Sankey can burn the system down.

So, I’m trying to understand the assertion regarding ESPN. The CFP committee members are bought and paid for by ESPN? Or, because ESPN bought the rights to broadcast, including the weekly rankings shows, then they get to influence the committee members some other way? Or the committee members—all except the chairman without direct ties to the SEC—are on the take for the SEC?

SEC just started this year to be broadcast on ESPN for the most part. The Saturday game that use to be on CBS nationally for the SEC moved to ESPN meaning all SEC games are broadcast on the family networks of ESPN. Additionally, the Big 10 has no games on ESPN when it use to have most on that network.

I understand who has purchased the rights to the various broadcasts. What I’m asking for is a non-tinfoil explanation of how ESPN influences a committee of 13 who are nominated by the P4, G6, and ND—the owners of the CFP—to select a 10-3 Alabama with a win over Georgia instead of 10-2 Notre Dame with wins, as you’ve been keen to point out, over nobody?

No other teams were even in contention. Congratulations to the Irish, proving once again their dominance.

Follow the money… Who owns the CFP? ESPN. Discussion over

Notre Dame wasn't included in the Playoffs for their schedule alright, their future schedule: The committee knew Notre Dame would be in the bracket spot scheduled to play Indiana in the semifinal

The CFP couldn't have Notre Dame ruining their cute Cinderella story. Prove me wrong.
