Screw Notre Dame. They get more second and third chances than any team out there. Top 5-10 recruiting class annually, no natty in 30+ years.  Weak schedule, playing the downtrodden ACC 5 games a year, Navy, etc… Play the Big 10 or SEC 5 times a year, see what record you have

Sounds kinda like a high school team I know, just change a few words and conference letters.

Don’t know how that happened, but that’s not my quote. @Komets2727 gave us that gem.

Maybe you should check out IU's schedule.  Iowa and Penn State, wer their marquee games to date, with Purdue at the end.  Notre Dame is circled on each opponent's schedule for some reason, because it's still a big time win for them.  Whether it's Navy or Boston College, they always play above their perceived levels against the Irish.  And at one time, Texas A&M and Miami were both top five rated teams, and A&M still is.  Losing by a total of four points isn't a non qualifier for the Irish, imho.

I think you left out Oregon.  Also at the time IU played Illinois, the Illini were ranked 9th.

I can see all the SEC fans crying right now. The Irish are the highest ranked two loss team and deservingly so.

Beating Oregon, Penn State, and Iowa on the road trumps anything Notre Dame has done.

You're right though about everyone giving Notre Dame their best shot.

None of this really matters though, Notre Dame is a playoff team, plain and simple. TV commentary this morning said what I've been saying the last four weeks. This team can win the title.

Indiana still has the best win in the nation at Oregon this year which you fail to mention. Miami won’t make the CFP so not sure that is a great loss either. The Irish schedule is terrible as usual. Hey, maybe they squeak into the CFP as we  all know the CFP loves the Irish to be relevant

Wolverines are up to #18 in the latest AP Poll...........hmmm.

As long as Michigan beats Northwestern and Maryland, if they beat Ohio State, they will be Indiana’s opponent, provided IU beats Wisconsin and Purdue, in the Big 10 championship…

I think it’s more complicated than that but I could be wrong.

USC and Oregon both have 1 conference loss and still have to play.

USC with one loss trumps Michigan head to head.

Not sure how the common opponents/opponent’s winning percentage tiebreaker would play out by then.

A lot of football left to be played.

(Also, I could sit here and make the argument that finishing 3rd in the Big Ten is better than actually making the title game when it comes to playoff hopes/seeding.)

Michigan, with 2 losses, is in the conversation for the CFP most likely. I don’t think USC is running the table but who knows? In your scenario, Michigan going 10-2 and avoiding the Big 10 title game is a better proposition than going to the title game and potentially losing to go to 19-3, which would eliminate them

Let’s also not ignore the bigger picture that comes from conference title games (though the seeding process has changed and it could just be an anomaly)…

Getting the bye in the CFP wasn’t kind to Oregon, Arizona State, Boise State or Georgia last year…

Also, gimme the incentive of a home game if I am a 1-4 seed.  On campus games are what makes college football great.

Just my opinion.

Agreed on the home games. My opinion is that all games should be played on campus until the semi-finals that way the top 4 seeds get a home game as a reward as well

And the Rose Bowl should be the title game location annually…

Another issue with conference title games, is the number of potential rematches in the playoff. This season it's shaping up to be IU and Ohio State, A&M and Alabama. I mentioned it a couple years ago, but there is also the potential of teams meeting 3 times in one season. It won't happen this year, but it is a possibility.

Indiana State and Kenesaw State ain't nothing to brag about.  No one of that caliber on the Irish schedule.

But Indiana State and Kenesaw State were wins at home.  No real cupcakes on the Irish schedule.  And I want to add that IU is my second favorite team.  I'm not the least negative to what they're achieved and become.

Again, their "games" against Indiana State and Kenesaw state negate the "strong schedule" argument.  See my remarks about IU on the IU thread.

I was simply pointing out you left Oregon off the list.  I remember seeing IU's schedule in the off-season, hoping they would get 1 of the Oregon, Iowa, and Penn State road games.  Never dreamed they would get all 3.

While I agree IU scheduled some easy wins, so does other schools.  Ole Miss this week played The Citadel.  Yet, I didn't hear a negative word.

When I look at the ESPN College Football Power Index, I think Indiana gets the SOS thrown around unfairly.  IU's is very comparable to ND, Ole Miss, Michigan, etc.  Much better than the ACC, and overall SEC is tougher.  (see below)

https://www.espn.com/college-football/fpi/_/view/resume

This particular rating (late October) had Indiana at 24 and Notre Dame at 32.

Poor Purdue....now they play a tough schedule.......BTW, Kennesaw State is 7-2 and leads Conference USA with a 5-0 record. 😉
