Embarrassing what this has become.  Even if they land him, hard to root for this kind of nonsense.

Bidding wars were not the initial intention of NIL.

Didn't you say that you didn't think Michigan would ever enter a bidding war with the SEC or Ohio State?  I get that he's right down the road from Ann Arbor, but IMO, their current staff doesn't have the sack to try outrecruiting Brian Kelly for a QB who likely cares more about NFL development than playing in Red Stick or the Big House. Obviously Michigan should put up a fight to recruit him, but entering a public bidding war for someone you're probably a longshot to land seems foolish to me.

Yeah, Michigan is playing the game now.  Never thought I'd see it.

Kelly is sorta on the hot seat right now and Sloan (OC) is a leading candidate for the ECU job which is Michigan's only hope.

I would think Kelly is sorta on the hot seat as well, but I heard an LSU insider say a month or so ago they would struggle coming up with cash for his buyout. IDK. Seems far fetched for a program like LSU to have to worry about cash buyout a coach. Still though, it's like a $60M buyout. That is pretty high.

Is it just assumed at this point he's down to LSU and Michigan and nobody else has a shot but Michigan IF he does flip?

I mean, he was at the Bama/LSU game on an official Saturday night and saw what DeBoer did with Milroe so...

Isn't there some other court case / settlement ongoing ?   Supposed to provide some sort of guardrails which SHOULD have been done ahead of this all if NCAA didn't have so much, whats he word,  HUBRIS, maybe that's it.

Yep. Do you see any legal routes for NIL being regulated in someway?

The issue is that the money and people handling it to make these offers cannot be officially connected to the universities. That ruling came from SCOTUS, so it will not change any time soon. The current path has it heading to semi pro or minor league level play. The only path I see for it to continue is for teams to be run by a President of the NIL group along with a GM, similar to how NFL teams operate. And they would pay the schools a fee to use the uniform, school name and nickname, stadium and other facilities.

I wonder how much ND and IU being in the current playoff standings impacted that?

There are so many possible ways this thing could go, it’s impossible to predict. But one model would be treat the players as university employees, and have them sign contracts with non-compete clauses. Many other worms would come crawling out of that can, though.

Seems like that would lead to less portal movement and unionized players.

Think “workers’ compensation” benefits for injuries arising out of and in the course of employment. But I do think unionization is the big fear. And it would be inevitable. Think about a wage scale for college athletes, and how hard it would be to formulate that.

Going to be an expensive roster in Ann Arbor now. I guess 10 mill was too hard to resist.

I see in the comments that David Portnoy of Barstool Sports was behind the offer.

Against the SEC, or just against Brian Kelly? I am guessing that Kelly's current status as a dead man walkin in Baton Rouge played role in the switch.

I mean, he has a $61 million buyout and would you currently describe Michigan’s coaching staff as stable?

I wouldn’t.

Rumor has it they aren’t done poaching from the SEC either.

Fair points....but do you really want them (Portnoy) to be forking over multi million dollar deals to poach them?

Not sure why I should care.  I stated above that in order to stay competitive in today’s climate, you’ve gotta play the game.

Who cares where the money comes from, it’s been going on forever.

Larry Ellison of Oracle firing the money cannon.  $10 million seems to be change found in the couch for this guy based on my brief research.

Not an alum, not even a fan…apparently his wife is.

You know how the saying goes…

”Happy wife, happy life.”

(Also, it’s $10 million over 4 years…)

Translation:  Send us a lot of money so we can buy a good football team.    This is now going on everywhere.

How soon before the pretense of big-time college athletic departments holding it's "students" to any sort of academic competence (aka going to classes) is finally done away with, and these athletes become employees of the school's athletic department with no academic responsibilities whatsoever?
