Muda69 Posted May 6 Posted May 6 (edited) https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/48693404/ted-turner-former-braves-owner-media-mogul-dies-87 Quote Ted Turner, the former owner of the Atlanta Braves and Hawks who made his mark as a media mogul and a philanthropist, has died at the age of 87. Turner died Wednesday at his home near Tallahassee, Florida, according to a family spokesman. In September 2018, Turner revealed that he was battling Lewy body dementia, an ailment that causes a progressive decline in mental abilities with physical signs and symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease. Turner made his fortune in media, taking over the family business and renaming it Turner Communications Group in 1970. He began his empire by purchasing two stations in Atlanta and Charlotte, North Carolina. In 1976, he launched TBS to millions across America, as the station's signal was carried via satellite. Four years later, he furthered his reach by creating the 24-hour cable news network CNN. TNT, created in 1988, increased Turner's footprint in the media landscape. Turner purchased the Braves in January 1976 following a 67-94 season by the club, saying at a news conference: "I don't want to see any more headlines calling Atlanta 'Loserville U.S.A.' I want to see Winnersville U.S.A.,'" He once managed the club for a day -- May 11, 1977 -- and the Braves won a World Series in 1995. ... Truly an American Capitalist Icon. He will be missed. Movies made from The Last Full Measure (Gettysburg) and Gods and Generals. Quote
Coach Nowlin Posted May 6 Posted May 6 Don't blame Jane..... I may have agreed with her on her stances too if she was coming to my house 🙂 (clearly TIC) Quote
Irishman Posted May 6 Author Posted May 6 What I appreciate most from Ted is his love for classic cinema; the movies and even the cartoons. He owned the early Warner Brothers cartoons; ones you would see on weekday cartoon shows occasionally but not on Saturdays.....as well as some of the more objectionable ones like the WWII ones making fun of the nazis and the Japanese. But the Turner Classic Movies channel is one I tune into often. It's only been a few years since I really started watching and grew in appreciation of them. Turner's efforts to preserve the old movies was significant. 1 Quote

Ted and I probably see the world differently on a number of political issues, and that's ok...no problem at all. But I struggle with someone that proclaims to be a progessive cat, yet promotes wet Tshirt nights as owner of the Atlanta Braves. Be what you claim....don't talk one thing, while your actions demonstrate massive inconsistency. I guess money trumps everything..... https://sportsesque.substack.com/p/copy-the-pitcher-who-tried-to-intentionally Edited May 7 by Bash Riprock Quote
Coach Nowlin Posted May 7 Posted May 7 Is the money he gave to bail out USA late payments to NATO supersede ballpark antics? Wild times in 1977 counter culture experience in the U S of A The famous disco demolition was in 1979 in Chicago Quote
Muda69 Posted May 7 Posted May 7 The late Mr. Turner was also rumored to be the bankroll behind the (now destroyed) Georgia Guidestones: Quote The inscriptions read:[2][23] The Guidestones as they stood in 2009. Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature. Guide reproduction wisely – improving fitness and diversity. Unite humanity with a living new language. Rule passion – faith – tradition – and all things with tempered reason. Protect people and nations with fair laws and just courts. Let all nations rule internally resolving external disputes in a world court. Avoid petty laws and useless officials. Balance personal rights with social duties. Prize truth – beauty – love – seeking harmony with the infinite. Be not a cancer on the Earth – Leave room for nature – Leave room for nature. Quote

I realize Ted did some nice things with his money...as honestly, he should. He had plenty and needed some tax write-offs. But Ted was very open verbally about his political beliefs...as if we should take note. But while pretending to be a progressive guy, he had no problem promoting his business through blantant misogyny....and exposing families to those antics. I don't have to pretend that didn't happen. Doesn't mean its not forgiveable....but it certainly isn't forgettable. How many other professional sports owners do you remember promoting attendance through wet tshirt nights?? Thus I'm not a big fan...walk your talk is all I am saying. You can love the guy all you want. Edited May 7 by Bash Riprock Quote

Apples to oranges comparison.....what behavior is allowed in an area of a venue vs the owner sponsoring/driving a wet T shirt contest to increase attendance, thus increase revenue is not at the same. Plus the owners of IMS haven't repeatedly voiced their political views that would be counter to their actions. The old "Snakepit" what you are referencing was known not to be for families. Wet T shirt night at Braves stadium exposed families. Claim to be a progressive while one treating women like objects. Just doesn't compute. My issue is less with the action and more with the hyprocisy of saying one thing, yet doing another......Sacrifice supposed principles in the name of the almighty $$. Not asking you to have my views....just simply saying he's not my fav. But he did make some great Civil War movies from classic books. Quote
Coach Nowlin Posted May 8 Posted May 8 For the record , just conversation..... not trying to convince you to change your stance on Ted Turner...... More than Fair across the board Quote
