ptr Posted July 28, 2025 Posted July 28, 2025 With football teams getting ready for the new season, I still haven't heard anything on what Bloomington South is going to do conference-wise. This year is the last hoorah for Conference Indiana with South, Col. North, and Southport all looking for a conference home. I saw back in April that J R Holmes, the athletic director and basketball coach for South, saying that HHC was an option but I haven't seen any updates on where things stand with all three teams that are looking for a conference home. Surely, I expect something on this situation before the new school year begins this fall, but maybe not. You would think that Southport being in the shadows of Indy, would have the easiest time finding a conference home. Quote

I know it’s a step down for them but I’d love to see Bloomington South and Columbus North in the HHC. I’d hope it would bring up the level of competition as a whole. Jennings County probably won’t be in the HHC much longer so this would ensure we get back to eight members. 1 Quote
Impartial_Observer Posted July 29, 2025 Posted July 29, 2025 Sadly I’m old enough to remember Jeff, Seymour, Southport, Columbus (North), and Bloomington ( South) were all in the South Central Conference together. Quote

I'm not sure of it, but University High played as an independent at that time. Edited July 29, 2025 by ptr Quote

I graduated in '64 and it was the following football season that they entered the SCC in the fall of '64. I remember that Evans. Reitz was considered the eminent football power in the state at that time and recently had a couple of 9-0 seasons and two state championships (mythical and no class football), and Bloomington High went down to Evansville (the 63-64 season) and beat them by something like 20 points in the Reitz Bowl. We had a big pep rally in the school gym that following Monday. Edited July 30, 2025 by ptr more information 1 Quote

I still have a South Central Conference handbook from my senior year in high school (1966 - Franklin Community). Among other information it provides, is the conference history up to that point. I remember the conference having nine members until Jeffersonville joined in the late 1950s as the 10th member; then Southport left after the 1963/64 school year and was replaced by Bloomington in 1964/65. I think BHS was chosen over University, Madison and a couple others (New Albany and North Vernon maybe?) A couple of forgotten members of the conference going wayback were Greencastle who was a charter member but withdrew in 1949 and Indianapolis Washington who joined in 1938 and left in 1942. 2 Quote
Frozen Tundra Posted July 31, 2025 Posted July 31, 2025 @ptr @Payne I just want to say it’s really cool having you guys as part of this online community. I unintentionally have this stereotypical assumption of what the ages of people are on this message board and I’ve been way off a lot of the time. My mind thinks 20s, 30s, 40s and maybe early 50s. Both of you being north of 75 is awesome. The stories of high school sports you must have and the knowledge you bring is very valuable. I have a great appreciation of it so thank you for your contributions in these message board discussions. 3 Quote

I never lost my love for high school sports and have attended Bloomington/Bloom South games, both football and basketball, ever since my graduation. A stint in the military temporarily disrupted that, but I kept up with things during that period, and started attending games again after I left the military. My nephew had three boys that were into sports at the high school level, but they were into baseball and attended Edgewood where they played varsity baseball, so I attended a lot of their baseball games when it was possible. 1 Quote
Frozen Tundra Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 Now that it’s August and we are three weeks away from the start of the regular season, I figured I’d post the non-conference schedules of each team below and note what changes have been made. Fkfootball Posted August 1, 2025 Posted August 1, 2025 Also I agree with you guys that the HHC needs to be Bloom South BNL Columbus North Columbus East Floyd Central Jeffersonville New Albany Seymour Quote

Jennings County is trying to slowly ease their way out of the HHC while looking for a new conference home. New Albany was the only team able to find a replacement opponent because that’s the only way Jennings County’s former AD was willing to drop HHC teams from the schedule. They wanted to drop other HHC teams but those other teams couldn’t find replacements in time. Quote

Not sure the dynamics of it all, but I can see any of the other five (other than Jeff and NA) bolting any time if they can find a soft spot to land. Not sure Seymour, BNL, or JC would be interested in playing in a conference with both Bloomington/Columbus schools. I know it’s been done, geographically/Indiana’s highways and byways, you can’t get from Seymour to Bloomington. JC would be interested the same boat. Considerable size differences as well. BNL and JC are both losing enrollment. Who knows where Seymour will be enrollment wise, I guess it depends on whether Ice agents ever make it to town. I can guarantee you this, if BNL, Seymour, CE, or JC gets a chance to cut ties with Jeff and NA they’ll do it in a heartbeat. Quote

Fortunately this year they picked up Warren East(KY) and Whiteland which are nice opponents. It wouldn't break my heart to just have a 10 team conference one day and just play conference games. That could be the future. Edited August 2, 2025 by Fkfootball Quote

Seymour has struggled over the years filling three non-conference games. River schools are in the same boat, you’re going to Louisville and getting your ass kicked or you’re driving three hours. 2 Quote

They are optimistic that something is bound to happen. I didn’t get a yes or no when I asked but I got the impression the EIAC wasn’t the only potential option. Personally, my eyes are on the Hoosier Heritage Conference. Shelbyville is leaving and there are rumors about Yorktown, Delta, and New Castle potentially making a move. If all three of them leave then I could see them trying to form their own conference. At that point, Connersville and Rushville have a choice. Join the new conference, join the Hoosier Heritage (not likely), or remain in the EIAC. If one or both leave then there’s the opening for Jennings County to join the EIAC. Quote

Fkfootball Posted August 7, 2025 Posted August 7, 2025 (edited) I saw this written about a Jennings County football player on Facebook. Thought I would share it. It's pretty cool. Proud moment today from the 1st Day of School! Panther Football Standards = make a difference on, and more importantly, off the field. We received this message today about Football Player Jr. Gomie Gomez. "During A-Lunch, Gomie Gomez, a junior at JCHS, was seen moving around the cafeteria after finishing his meal. Instead of sticking with his usual group, he made a point to approach students sitting alone or students he didn’t know—introducing himself, asking about their day, and finding out what their favorite classes and teachers were." Great job Gomie! Making a difference in others first day of school in a positive way! All Panther Football players - follow Gomie's lead. Set the tone for the whole school for the new school year! Great job again Gomie! I hope Jennings County has a winning record this season. No community in this conference deserves it more. Edited August 7, 2025 by Fkfootball 1 Quote
