Week 5 Picks

Columbus East (2-2, 1-0 HHC) at New Albany (1-3, 0-1 HHC): The Olympians lead the all-time series with the Bulldogs 29-6. East has won the last four and 23 of the last 24. East has also won the last 12 games at New Albany with the last loss there being in 2002. This will be the closest game of the three. I have East by two to three TDs.

Jeffersonville (1-3, 1-1 HHC) at 5A #5/#6 Floyd Central (4-0, 1-0 HHC): The Highlanders took the lead in the series over the Red Devils last year which was the first time since 1981. Jeff led it 24-10 after their game in 2009 but Floyd Central has won six straight and 18 of the last 21 to take a 28-27 lead. Floyd Central wins by at least 35 here. Cue the running clock.

Seymour (0-4, 0-3 HHC) at BNL (3-1, 2-0 HHC): This has been a pretty even series lately with the Stars and Owls splitting the last 12 matchups with six wins apiece. Seymour leads the overall series 26-25 but BNL will look to win consecutive games for the first time since 2018 and 2019. I don’t foresee them having any trouble doing so. A running clock wouldn’t surprise me.

I usually don't go into discussing or posting JV and frosh scores, but with South about to enter the HHC next season, I thought I would post that the Columbus East freshmen handed South's freshman team their first loss of the season with a 42-35 shootout win. It was the Panthers' freshmen first loss of the season who are now 3-1 on the season. The Panther JV team blew out Greenfield-Central, 59-14, to go 4-0 so far on the season. These are players that will make up a sizable chunk of South's team in their first season in the HHC.

I had the East/Seymour Frosh/JV games a couple of weeks ago. East Frosh group is SOLID. Oddly enough, they tied Seymour’s Frosh 14-14. Unfortunately since that time a fair number of Seymour’s Frosh are seeing V minutes and there were probably 5-6 of them last Saturday that saw enough V minutes they didn’t even play JV. Kind of gives you a glimpse into Seymour’s program. When you’re playing frosh and sophs, it’s men v boys.

Speaking of feeder teams. Pretty cool to see 7 of our youth teams get to play in Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend. The number of players and coaches we have in the Highlander Youth system is ridiculous right now.

Crazy things happen when you start winning consistently and being ranked consistently. The youth program grows and you get invited to play at Lucas Oil Stadium.
