Final article in the series...

https://www.courierpress.com/story/sports/high-school/2024/08/09/who-are-the-toughest-sw-indiana-football-coaches-to-play-against/74610539007/

Mike Goebel, Scott Buening & John Hurley most frequently mentioned as toughest coaches to play against.

Fun series by Kyle Sokeland at the Ev. Courier to kick off the new season.

I've always wondered how some of the area's top public coaches would do with the kids they have at the local parochials.....hypothetically.  Or is it a different perhaps additional skill set completely to be a top coach at a public vs P&P?  Everything else is so radically different...is coaching as well?  What are the differences in coaching at Brebeuf vs say Mt. Vernon (Posey)?

What about vice versa?

It’s interesting to consider how it would’ve gone had Goebel or Hurley coached last year’s Reitz roster - which was absolutely loaded with athleticism and talent.

Football knowledge, strategy, game coaching aside…those two guys are creatures (and protectors) of their programs’ cultures.  And I gather that’s the biggest difference - just as I’m sure they’re both culturally different than rural schools like GS, HH, and Southridge.

But as Hart and Buening have demonstrated, you can certainly build a vibrant winning culture at the rural schools.  I’m sure the vibe at those programs is “Whoever we have playing at whatever position, we can play with anybody and we have high expectations of anybody who steps on the field wearing this uniform.”

The author of this article mentioned Memorial's "Top 3 Games" as Jasper, Reitz & Castle.  Jasper was mentioned because it is a "rivalry game".  Hmm.  My question to MHS fans - and please be honest with your answer - Is Mater Dei no longer one of your top 3 games?  Has the "rivalry" with Jasper supplanted the cross-town tilt with the Wildcats?

MD is more of a rival than Jasper.  No doubt about it.

I always look forward to the MD-Memorial games, besides the 2018 game, in the last 8 years, most of games have been fairly competitive. Should be a good one in the Bowl during Week 4.

In my mind, our big rivalries are with Castle, Jasper and MD. I think he replaced MD with Reitz purely based on what happened last year in the tournament.

Watermelon Scrimmage went well today, especially of how nice it was tonight. That August heat last year sucked.

Beautiful night. Huge crowd. I was selling athletic passes all night and it was steady. Never got to see even 1 play...

I liked what I saw, defense was flying around like hawks, and the Offense looked good. Although, I think they are still tweaking a few things, I did see few dropped passes, but that is about it. Also, it’s sometimes a little bit tricky to evaluate the inter-squad scrimmages, so the Castle Scrimmage next week will be a lot more telling. I was impressed with the trenches, the OL definitely beefed up over the summer.

Article Recap, Tigers feel like they can be competitive this season and be contenders. Team needs to stay healthy, since some starters got injured last season and didn’t reach their full potential. The Tigers will lean heavy with the upperclassmen with the Offense leading the way. Even though the defense lost some to graduation, they will be spearheaded by MLB Broshears, but HC Hurley likes the Defensive core. Seems like there is at lot of interchangeability on the defense side. They talk about dropping back down to 3A and how Sectional 32 is going be tough. However, the team believes they have potential to have a great year, even if there are tough tasks ahead of them.

Drove by Castle just a bit ago. Lots of workers getting after it.

I’m guessing it’s about done, can’t wait to see it on Friday! Same with Jasper’s new stadium next weekend too.

With the first game just a week away, some preseason questions to ponder about until then:

Can Reitz go back to back to back undefeated regular season champs or at least 3 peat in the SIAC Title?

Can Castle finally end their SIAC Title drought this season? On paper, the Knights return a plethora of starters and talent to make the case.

Castle-North rematch next week, who will win that game? Should be an interesting matchup, as North swept Castle last season at their place.

Will the Tigers claim a share of the SIAC crown this season? Seems like they are due for another one since 2019.

Who else in the conference do you see in capturing the SIAC Crown or at least sharing it?

Who will have the best offense or defense in the conference?

Can Mater Dei have a rebound year after going 3-7 last season?

With Memorial out of Sectional 24, can either Jasper or Reitz takes the reins of the sectional? A Reitz-Jasper Championship game would be exciting.

Sectional Champs winners?

Who will have the deepest playoff run this season?

What regular season game will be the best one this season?

SIAC POTY or COTY predictions?

Do we see Bosse continuing to see improvement this season?

Can V. Lincoln sustain their trajectory after a nice campaign last year?

Will we see any improvements with Central or Harrison this season?

Just a few questions to wonder about it for the next week and half until the 23rd.

Can Reitz go back to back to back undefeated regular season champs or at least 3 peat in the SIAC Title? I predict the Mighty Panthers will not go undefeated, which should help the players and coaches come tournament time from getting over-confident, which has cost them the last two years (#discipline). I could foresee several teams being SIAC Co-Champs.

Can Castle finally end their SIAC Title drought this season? On paper, the Knights return a plethora of starters and talent to make the case. They have to be the early favorite.

Castle-North rematch next week, who will win that game? Should be an interesting matchup, as North swept Castle last season at their place. Castle.

Will the Tigers claim a share of the SIAC crown this season? Seems like they are due for another one since 2019. Memorial has the potential to be a good team. We will see. Jasper is always a tough Wk. 1 opponent.

Who else in the conference do you see in capturing the SIAC Crown or at least sharing it? I think Castle is the favorite, then Reitz, Memorial & Jasper (in no particular order)

Who will have the best offense or defense in the conference? No idea on O, but Castle D should be stout.

Can Mater Dei have a rebound year after going 3-7 last season? I predict MD goes 4-5 in the SIAC this year.

With Memorial out of Sectional 24, can either Jasper or Reitz takes the reins of the sectional? A Reitz-Jasper Championship game would be exciting. It has to be 1 of those 2. It sure isn't going to be Bosse, Harrison, Central or Washington. Boonville is the only other team that could be considered as having a shot.

Sectional Champs winners? Castle in S 16, Jasper in S24 & Memorial in S32.

Who will have the deepest playoff run this season? If Castle can get past the Regional, they would run into East Central, so... Jasper could get into Semi-State to face an Indy Chatard or Roncalli. I personally think 3A is SW Indiana's best shot at having a team at Lucas Oil. Whoever makes it out of S32 would be the 3A South favorite. Don't care about 2A anymore since MD is up in 3A.

What regular season game will be the best one this season? Castle @ Memorial at historic Bosse Field on Oct. 18. Tickets are going fast...

SIAC POTY or COTY predictions? Max McCool (Castle) & Doug Hurt (Castle)

Do we see Bosse continuing to see improvement this season? No. Wagner was the straw that stirred the drink. Bosse will fight it out with Harrison and Central for the last spot in the SIAC.

Can V. Lincoln sustain their trajectory after a nice campaign last year? Lincoln always has some tough-nosed players. It will be interesting to see how they bounce back after losing the QB.

Will we see any improvements with Central or Harrison this season? It honestly can't get much worse than Central was last year, so I expect some improvement. Harrison will be about the same as last year - maybe 2 wins.

MY THOUGHTS...

My responses...

Can Reitz go back to back to back undefeated regular season champs or at least 3 peat in the SIAC Title?  Yes, they can. However, it will be much more of a challenge for them this year. I think they will have to win games with their defense again. But they could be their own worst enemy again if they don't reduce turnovers and penalties.

Can Castle finally end their SIAC Title drought this season? On paper, the Knights return a plethora of starters and talent to make the case. They have a solid chance. But. They always have tight battles with North. I'm not sure they can beat Memorial this year. They've been neck and neck with Reitz at halftime the past two years but got left in the dust in the 2nd half both times.

Castle-North rematch next week, who will win that game? Should be an interesting matchup, as North swept Castle last season at their place. Always a competitive game. I think Castle gets the best of the Huskies this year. North takes a step back this year.

Will the Tigers claim a share of the SIAC crown this season? Seems like they are due for another one since 2019. They are due and have a great chance. But I am a believer in the champ being the champ until they are dethroned. They do get Reitz at Enlow this year which is always tough for opponents.

Who else in the conference do you see in capturing the SIAC Crown or at least sharing it? Reitz, Memorial, Castle and that's it. I think Jasper and North are both competitive but a tier below.

Who will have the best offense or defense in the conference? I think Memorial will have the top offense, or at least the most efficient. I think for defense it will be close between Castle and Reitz. They both return a handful of very good defensive players. VL will have a stout defense as well.

Can Mater Dei have a rebound year after going 3-7 last season? They will bounce back a little bit but still struggle to beat the good teams. I could see them winning 4-5 conference games. Who will be at QB for them? If they can find a serviceable QB, it will serve them well to have Mallory at WR.

With Memorial out of Sectional 24, can either Jasper or Reitz takes the reins of the sectional? A Reitz-Jasper Championship game would be exciting. The winner of this sectional (most likely between Reitz and Jasper) will have a good shot in the Regional as well. Jasper will be improved but I still don't think they will be good enough to beat Reitz.

Sectional Champs winners? Castle and Reitz. I think Memorial has a shot but GS or HH will be a difficult roadblock. But they always have a good shot getting playoff games at Enlow.

Who will have the deepest playoff run this season?  I don't think Castle would beat East Central. If Reitz can beat Jasper in that sectional, I think they get a shot at semistate. If Memorial can somehow get past HH and GS, they will have a good shot at semistate or state.

What regular season game will be the best one this season? Reitz vs. Castle at the Bowl could be a great game. Always a big crowd and both teams could be 4-0 and highly ranked at that point.

SIAC POTY or COTY predictions? Memorial could sweep the awards. I think Fisher or Ellspermann take POTY if they both stay healthy. I think Broshears is the DPOTY, and COTY will probably go to the conference winner (Brunson, Hurley, or Hurt most likely).

Do we see Bosse continuing to see improvement this season? They definitely have momentum but replacing a once in a decade type QB talent is crucial. I think they struggle more this year.

Can V. Lincoln sustain their trajectory after a nice campaign last year? They have definitely built a solid foundation and culture of competitiveness. They will have a strong defense but can they score enough to beat the good teams? I don't think so.

Will we see any improvements with Central or Harrison this season? I think Central improves quite a bit and Harrison improves a little bit. However, what does that mean...1 or 2 wins?

That’s news to me, I thought they said in the C&P article he will be the QB again this season. Unless something has changed these last 2 weeks

No clue, just spouting. He very well could be I just they think would be better off to have somebody else who throws just as well or better, as Mallory could be more of a threat at WR.
