In the post it says "coaching position only". The last coach wasn't in the building either. How can they expect to get many quality applicants, without a teaching position? I was interested in the position, but I can't move my family for a coaching stipend. It's tough to win as it is. It's even tougher when you're at a school that's had so little success. It's impossible when a school with that history has an Admin doesn't care. I truly feel sorry for the kids.

Is there a coaching shortage brewing?
vicvinegar replied to a topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Just to be clear, there is a teacher shortage in SOME subjects. Primarily Math, Science and Special Ed. I know several PE/Health, History and Elementary teachers who have struggled to find jobs. Now to the coaching. There is never one answer to a question like this, but I believe the biggest problem is Admin. Willing to coach should help a teacher get a position. I actually feel like it hurts candidates more than it helps them. I've had multiple interviews and NEVER during those interviews have I been asked "Are you willing to coach?". It's not a factor for most admin. A lot of coaches do/are willing to coach multiple sports. Until Admin makes it a priority, a coaching shortage for a lot of corporations will only get worse. -
I agree that some teaching positions make it more difficult, especially in the first year. Some of it depends on when they are hired. I was lucky enough to be hired in June. So all summer once practice was over, I went to school and worked on lesson plans. Once school started, I obviously had to make adjustments, but I at least had a majority of lesson plans completed. There are other things that can ease up the workload. HC's should realize this and give them less responsibilities. An athletic class, allows the coaches to spend more time focusing on teaching/lesson plans/ grading as opposed to going to weights after school during the off-season. I'm not disagreeing with you, but at the end of the day, I think that teachers that want to teach ________ & coach _________, are willing to find a way to do it.

There obviously isn't just one answer, but I think for SOME of these school's Admin either doesn't care or have given up. First, make practice convenient for players. Have an athletic class. Students no longer have to find a way home after workouts, plus it allows them to work after school during the off-season. Adding an activity bus would also increase participation. It would allow students a way home after practice in-season. This doesn't have to be difficult. Coaches can't drive players home after practice in their personal vehicles (at least aren't supposed to). So get them licensed to drive the activity bus and I'm sure a lot of coaches will be happy to take players home themselves. Secondly is coaching. I feel a lot of these schools fall in one of three categories. Either they hire a coach and fire them after 2-3 years if they haven't turned the program around. Coaches need more time than that to turn these perennial losers. OR hire a coach that averages 2-3 wins a year and the Admin allows them to stick around for 10-15 years. apparently they aren't a good fit. OR they hire a coach that has been to 2-3 schools and failed. It honestly puzzles me. I assume they feel that they are hiring someone that "knows" how to run knows how to run a program, keeping the Admin from having to deal with any day to day headaches. Admin should also take coaching into consideration when they are hiring teachers. It should factor in if a teacher is willing to coach one or multiple sports. Obviously not every teacher is going to be a coach, but I do feel like coaches are judged in a negative way by a lot of admin. They believe coaches just want to coach and don't care about teaching. Are there bad teachers that coach? Sure. Are there bad teachers that that don't coach? You bet! This would actually allow HC's to get talented assistants as opposed to having MAYBE a teacher or two, then hoping for lay coaches to fill out the rest of the staff. There are plenty of talented lay coaches, but work schedule keeps a lot of guys from coaching. Once again there are multiple reasons why some programs struggle year after year, but I feel Admin is one of the main factors.

Governor: Transgender athletes will 'destroy women's sports'
vicvinegar replied to Muda69's topic in OOB v2.0's OOB Forum
So we can just claim things now and society has to change so someone's feelings don't get hurt? You know, I've always felt like I was 67. Can I get social security? If not, you're a bigot! #Science -
Conference HUDL Film Trade
vicvinegar replied to POTLUCK's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
This right here. There have been very few times when we haven't been able to get a film we want. Rivals of the team you're preparing for are also usually happy to give whatever they have. 😉 -
According to the list at the top of the page, Pike Central is open. However, I haven't seen anything official, nor has it been posted on the school corp website.

I agree, but I'd switch TC & NP.

I'd like to say something, but it would get me in trouble. I'll just say, 8 year olds are allowed to make other major decisions in today's society. Yes! So many of the guys I played with in HS have had their lives ruined because they played football. Even though the rules and equipment were so much safer back then. I'll agree with this.

Picks For 2021 State Champions

I THOUGHT during the state game the announcers said the SA QB was a senior. He'll be a tough one to replace. -

Picks For 2021 State Champions

I would be curious to see who people think these teams will beat. Picking Cathedral to win 5A isn't really going out on a limb. I'm curious to who everyone thinks will be in the state championship games and who will win the match up. Just trying to make it a little more interesting. -

When I first started teaching, I had an experienced teacher tell me "Look out for yourself, because schools won't be loyal to you". As both a bystander and personal experience, I would say in general he was right. Back to on topic. Good for Coach West and FC. What a great hire! He's been a winner everywhere he's been. Hopefully, he'll be able to make FC a competitive program. -
Is Harrison about to overtake Jeff in Lafayette?
vicvinegar replied to a topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I was simply pointing out the similarities between the two. Similarities that some on here have said are VERY important to having a successful program. With that said, I actually believe Noblesville has the right guy up there. Look for them to be more competitive over the next few years. -
Is Harrison about to overtake Jeff in Lafayette?
vicvinegar replied to a topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Harrison isn't overtaking Jeff in the next decade. The only way that COULD happen is if Shanley leaves, which I don't see happening. I'm sure Harrison will beat Jeff here and there, but Jeff will win more conference titles than Harrison will. One could talk about how it's a growing area and F/RL. That sounds a lot like another school that we have a thread about... Franklin Central. Except that thread is questioning whether or not it's a good job. I'm sure the same has been said about Noblesville several times. -
Is Harrison about to overtake Jeff in Lafayette?
vicvinegar replied to a topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I believe Harrison will continue to put up winning seasons, because 1) they are a fundamentally sound coached team. 2) the conference they are in. I'm sorry, but a program that's any real threat doesn't give up 76 points to anyone. I believe the Roncalli game was scheduled on a Wednesday (coronavirus), only giving Roncalli 2 days to prep for that offense. I feel sorry for the Rebels coaching staff! The Zionsville game was 33-6 until mid 4th quarter. The #2's and a couple onside kicks made that score closer than it was. Not if/but when they move up to 6A, I think they will struggle in the playoffs for the near future. I think the only way they get over the hump, is as they continue to grow (enrollment), they start stealing some athletes from Jeff as well. -
Official takes a lick.....
vicvinegar replied to RetiredOfficial03's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I didn't catch that the first time. Seems very strange. Perhaps he thought he was going after the other team and not the official? I do think others were trying to stop him. If only #72 were a little faster. Lol -
What is happening to Terre Haute Enrollments?
vicvinegar replied to a topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Have you been to Terre Haute? Lol I joke! Seriously, that's a crazy drop in enrollment. I do think it's probably time for them both to change conferences. In most conferences, I believe they would be more successful during the regular season. Having that success, would only help to get out more players. I don't really need to do the research to guess who would be in their sectional in 4A, to know that their sectional would then be easier than it currently is. -

Thanks for clarifying! I truly didn't know the exact difference.
