  1. Except that the majority of the non-athletes don't already have a full or partial ride for their college tuition and living expenses. While there may be some similarities in your comparison....I don't see quite see it as apple to apple. Additionally, most athletes and especially those outside the D1 bigger programs won't experience this benefit.
  2. Yep....not a fan of his leadership. But in this case I do agree that variability in this case presents challenges toward a fair playing field. Comments last year from Gonzaga's Mark Few https://theathletic.com/news/gonzagas-mark-few-says-varying-nil-laws-disastrous-lead-to-unfair-advantages/jZpV9x2IAHf0/ University of Illinois professor weighs in...... https://sports.yahoo.com/system-balance-time-revisit-college-135007831.html
  3. While I am not much of a fan of Emmert, I do agree in this case consistency is needed, given the variability of state laws. https://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/33641798/mark-emmert-says-ncaa-congress-work-together-move-nationwide-nil-uniformity
  4. See…we are aligned that some athletes at a number of colleges have different admittance standards than the general student. Took some time…glad we got there.
  5. Nice ride Gonzo…too bad they don’t have a charging station for you. 😉
  6. I understand the thread. Academies loose athletes every year through the portal. You challenged my comments on admissions....just shared my experiences that you still wished to debate. I never disagreed your theory about the additional Covid year. Not saying I agree or disagree. Only time will tell I guess.
  7. I'll try to do better....BTW, I didn't just reference service academies and Ivy's. Anyone going through the recruiting process will understand the school is neither when they talk to a room full of parents about meeting the NCAA minimums. I don't ever remember our non-athlete children going on college visits and us being talked to about just meeting NCAA minimum criteria for admittance. 🙄
  8. Believe what you want to believe....go back and re-read. Do you really think the Ivy's and the academies were talking to parents about NCAA minimums for admission??? C'mon. Yes, the Ivy's do not give athletic scholarships....but they still have admission requirements....and those are absolutely flexed around "bands". (at our time, 4 different bands A-D around the mean admission standards) Additionally, the Ivy's absolutely work around not providing athletic scholarships through "aid".....this I know firsthand. That aid can be substantial based upon the recruit. To be clear...I am not saying ALL institutions or for ALL sports. My experience was with football recruiting....and that included a number of state and private institutions. I'm not trying to sell you. Go out and get your own experiences.
  9. I lived through the recruiting process as well for a child....I know what I heard in rooms about meeting NCAA minimums for admission. Had the process of banding around the mean student admission acceptance criteria explained at Ivy League schools and know first hand while still high standards, football players go through a different application review process at the service academies than a general admission applicant. Perhaps this is more for revenue generating sports....but since this is a football forum, talking that sport only from personal experience. Lots of info out there about this....use your fav search engine.
  10. ok...I hope that statement was an attempt at humor...seems a little extreme. Wasn't long ago that a student athlete could transfer, but had to lay out a year. But they could always transfer. In the Big 10 conference, wasn't that long ago that a student could transfer, but lost the scholarship. I believe Jeff George experienced this leaving Purdue for Illinois. I don't think anyone is arguing for the abolishment of the ability to transfer.....but for perhaps some accountability for their decisions which hopefully will result in a higher degree of dedication and perseverance. I thought the rule the old rule of laying out a year for staying at the same level of play was just fine. Let's be honest...athletes in many cases, don't have to meet the same academic criteria that the non-athlete needs to be admitted to an institution. In a high % of schools, NCAA minimums won't get the average student admitted. So there is already an admittance break that has been afforded to many athletes. Show some level of gratitude and moxie to compete before giving up and heading to "greener pastures". Only an opinion.....
  11. Great thoughts.... we pretty much align...I totally agree about having an excellent TE. Speaking of GB, sure hope the former Indiana State guy Robert Tonyan comes back 100%. Seems he and Rogers have a nice connection. No doubt Tyreek Hill benefited from Kelce. But I also think Kelcey benefited from Hill. Hill kept safeties honest, while opening up the underneath for Kelce. LB's can't hang with him. Guess we shall see how Kelce does this year as clearly the #1 target. Hey, we see the importance of speed differently for a WR corp. If I am an offensive coordinator, and I can stretch the field, I will absolutely do it. Opens up the slot, TE, short to middle routes, and the running backs sure appreciate it as well. I don't need all of my WR's to be blazers....but I would sure like one or two to get some attention. I just hope Campbell can finally be that guy for the Colts.
  12. Not questioning David Bell at all. I have personally seen him play a ton of football and basketball games during his WC days. Great athlete and great young man. I know what he did at Purdue. So I don't question he will be a success. The question I am raising is that having both he and Pittman would be having 2 of the same type of receivers. They are both excellent, but I question their abilities to stretch the field and force the safeties to play deeper. This is where we may disagree that speed matters. Perhaps it was a bad day for his 40. Pittman ran a 4.52 for his 40 (considerably faster than Bell) and he is not considered a field stretch type of receiver. To ignore Bell's 4.65 40 would not be wise. Reggie Wayne ran a 4.45 40. And yet Harrison with a 4.38 was typically considered the deep threat. All I am saying is that I am not sure to compare Bell to Harrison (a proven HOF guy) is a good comparison...at least yet. Colts have a pretty darn good WR coach.....my guess is that Ballard and Reich will certainly listen to his input. But please know I am a David Bell fan....and not saying the Colts would be wrong for drafting him. Just hoping they can find a WR with great hands that puts fear into a secondary.
  13. I did read Bell's interest. Great character guy, playing for his home town team and catches everything that comes his way sounds awesome. I agree there are some comparisons with Harrison in terms of hands and route running. But they are very different physically. Bell is much bigger than Harrison, but Harrison was timed in the 40 at 4.38 while still at Syracuse. He could definitely stretch the field. The 4.65 40 Bell ran at the combine does raise eyebrows, and would seem to be more of a possession receiver. It would be great to have him, but I hope the Colts find that receiver that makes the safeties respect and play deeper. I hope that is Campbell.....and he can stay healthy. I like Bell a ton, but hard to compare him now to a HOF player.
  14. I was a little surprised they kept it in Orchard Park....I kept hearing downtown. The area close to where the Sabres play by the Lake Erie waterfront is nice. Good for them...glad this will keep the Bills at home and not in Toronto or some other city that would have absolutely paid for the team.
  15. Not sure if he is missing the point...... Not everyone entering the transfer portal is "transferring up". I would say most transfers are perceived lateral or even transferring down.
  16. If I head to "Negativetown", some reasons may include: Path of least resistance Inflated feelings of their own abilities Difficulty in accepting feedback Work ethic - personal feeling of entitlement
  17. Is he a Pittman type receiver? Colts need someone that can stretch the field. While great hands and a great route runner, not sure if Bell is that guy. Hopefully, Campbell can stay healthy and a guy like Bell would be great for depth.
  18. I wonder if that might change in the future, as CG won't be playing a MIC schedule after this season. Tough game going into the post season. Plus falling on fall break impacts attendance for CG....not sure about the Irish fall break schedule. Classic series.
  19. Sadly so....I sure hope that changes in the final year of his contract with the Colts
  20. they really need a LT, WR and a TE. Hope he does something. I would really love to see Paris Campbell break out and stay healthy. He has the speed and skill....just has to figure out a way to stay on the field. If he could stay healthy, he could have major impact with Matty Ice.
  21. There is no debate about his play....although he wasn't the only one to fail the last 2 games of the season. Especially in the Jax game...that was a total team breakdown, especially with the O Line and the entire defense. To single out one person for those debacles is certainly biased. The entire team had a job to do, including the coaching staff that obviously didn't have them ready to play. I am asking you about your sources in regards to his actions in the locker room. Do you have real sources or is this just your personal feelings? Simple question.
  22. I used to get out to Wyoming (Casper area) for business and local sports page featured their 8 man HS teams.....but always 2nd fiddle to rodeo. I thought that was really cool.
  23. Some good insight.....Ryan is probably one of the best options out there...for short term. He's definitely on the tail end of his career and hopefully he can rebound from declining stats last year. But he is a short-term solution...Rivers Part II I do hope the O line improves this year...wasn't great down the stretch and now they must replace both the LT and RG positions. I'm a little more skeptical than you about their recent performance. Its time to move on from Wentz. I understand Zak Keefer wrote a negative article on his leadership and coachability in the Atlantic, but again provides no sources. I tend to take the work of players like Leonard, Pittman, Taylor, etc. over a member of the media....a biased media from day 1. Reich had positive words to say just yesterday, and I don't see him be blantantly dishonest. As the quote from the Forgetting Sarah Marshall, "its like the Sopranos....its over." https://clutchpoints.com/commanders-news-colts-coachs-surprising-comments-about-carson-wentz-per-ron-rivera/ Now, let hope the Colts can fill other needed position gaps.....LT, WR, TE, etc.
