The things that made him special had to do with athleticism, not skill. He was never a particularly accurate passer, but he had better running ability than Michael Vick because of his size. The designed QB run was a major part of his game. After he began to accumulate injuries, however, he became much less of a run threat, and teams were content to let him try to win from the pocket. He’s never been able to do that on a consistent basis. He’s maybe an average NFL backup from the pocket.

This board used to be absolutely loaded with Penn people. But now, barely a whisper. You sound like you’re pretty much just starting out. The current shortage of officials has provided some amazing opportunities for newer officials. But it takes some investment to capitalize in the opportunities. A young official who works hard at it can advance much more quickly than was traditionally the case.

The rule is pretty specific. Rule 1-5-1b(2) “2. Players of the visiting team shall wear jerseys, unaltered from the manufacturer’s original design/production, that meet the following criteria: The body of the jersey (inside the shoulders, inclusive of the yoke of the jersey or the shoulders, below the collar, and to the bottom of the jersey) shall be white…”

A long sleeve and short sleeve sublimated shirt will cost about $100. You can make that in one week with a varsity and a JV or freshman game. Not much of an excuse.

Yes, but wearing the patch as required and being licensed are 2 different things. An official not properly uniformed is something that should be brought to the assignor’s attention, and corrected. An official working without a license is a vastly different, and far more serious, matter. FYI, any questions about patches will soon go the way of the dodo. From here forward, shirts are manufactured with the patch “sublimated.”

I agree with everything you’re saying. I just want to make it clear that the “evaluator” referred to was not me. I don’t typically dispense legal advice when I go to observe a crew. The one time an AD requested a legal opinion from me while I was officiating at his home game, I politely declined.

No doubt some specific guidance would be helpful. This stuff is usually not a secret. One possible way to handle it is with preventive officiating: mention it to the AD and the coaches in the pregame. Trust them to take care of it.

That’s right. Once any K player signals during the kick, there can be no advance of the kick when caught or recovered.

I was browsing another high school football forum and came across this picture. I commented that the visitors’ jerseys were illegal, which they are, because they are not white. I got a slew of responses about teams that routinely wear gold jerseys on the road. Is this true, that teams are wearing gold visitors’ jerseys? If — and it’s a big “if” under the circumstances — the officials choose to penalize the receivers for delay, it’s a bit tricky. There’s a foul on the kicking team for kick catching interference, which has several enforcement options. But the tricky part is the foul by the receivers comes after the ball becomes dead by rule. (Once any player from Team K gives a fair catch signal, the ball is dead as soon as it is possessed.) Since we have both a live ball foul and a dead ball foul, it cannot be a double foul. The penalties do not offset. Both can be enforced. ”Do over” is not an option. Sounds like the crew thought this was a double foul, but it’s not.
