  1. I’m talking about the situation where, for example, the widest receiver is on the line, and the slot receiver on that side is off … except he’s not far enough behind the wide receiver to be in the backfield. When he goes downfield on a pass, instead of flagging him for being an ineligible downfield, we’ll talk to him after the play and tell him either to move up a step or back a step. It’s called preventive officiating. And it’s done that way at every level.
  2. Just telling you the way it is. Don’t shoot the messenger.
  3. It was 102 yrs. ago today that George Gipp died. You cannot be a true Notre Dame fan if you don’t know that story.
  4. I can see where you would think that. Lining up on vs. off the line receivers is something that our officials are told not to nitpick. Ordinarily, this is handled as a “talk-to” unless the violations are egregious or repeated.
  5. Believe it or not, some organizations actually work out contingency plans in advance, in case Plan A doesn’t pan out. Apparently, that concept is foreign to the NCAA. Most organizational disasters are not the result of a plan failing, but rather of failing to plan.
  6. I heard a guy say this morning, “the world is a much less interesting place without Mike Leach in it.” That sums it up. Did you know he had a law degree?
  7. No, they can’t. Let me be clear. Bowen is a stud. There are not many at his position who have come out of Indiana HSF and can claim to be better. But Jaylon Smith is one of those few. He was just a superior athlete.
  8. Jaylon Smith was a better player in high school than Bowen, on both sides of the ball.
  9. Ummmm …. no. I think Bowen is a terrific player. But he’s not even the best LB to come out of Indiana in the last 10 years, let alone 50.
  10. So, if you’re the R, you go to the wing official who signaled the TD, and say “ I know who had the ball. Who TF do you think had the ball.?”
  11. So, did they end up getting this right … I hope?
  12. How would you feel if the exchange had been for the imprisoned Marine, instead of a black, lesbian basketball player?
  13. 49 out of 100 is not a majority. In this instance, it is a plurality.
  14. Very classy move by Hamilton Southeastern. Outstanding sportsmanship. Kudos to them. https://www.wthr.com/article/life/heartwarming/hamilton-southeastern-donates-semi-state-money-to-memorial-fund-for-carroll-hs-student-owen-scheele/531-96a41c8e-c71d-4bdb-b2d9-aef3e3c26781 HSE donates semi-state money to memorial fund for Carroll H.S. student The Royals lost to Carroll in a Class 6A semi-state game last month. FISHERS, Ind. — Despite a heartbreaking loss in their semi-state football game last month, Hamilton Southeastern scored a win with a show of sportsmanship after the game. The Royals lost to Carroll High School from Fort Wayne, 21-15, on Nov. 18. The Chargers had dedicated their season to the memory of Owen Scheele, who died this summer after a brief battle with cancer. According to WPTA-TV, Hamilton Southeastern donated a portion of the money they received from the IHSAA for reaching semi-states to the Owen Scheele Memorial Fund, which was created to "allow Owen to touch lives in his community for many years." “Obviously, our outcome on that night was what we wanted, it wasn’t what they wanted,” said Carroll High School athletic director Dan Ginder. “But they were still able to celebrate the life of Owen with us.” Carroll's run ended with a loss to Center Grove in the Class 6A state championship game, but Ginder said HSE's gesture shows the amazing side of sports that goes beyond wins and losses.
  15. The Tarblooders’ win was the first state championship by a Cleveland public school in the tournament era (50 yrs.).
  16. So, if I understand what happened, on 3rd down Team A ran it down very close to, but short of, the line to gain. They then lined up for 4th down, and Team B encroached, resulting in a half the distance penalty, but not a 1st down. The linesman mistakenly told the box man to display 1st down on the box, not 4th down. Team A then ran a play into the line which was stopped for no gain, mistakenly thinking it was 1st down when, in reality, it was 4th down. Since, they were still short of the line to gain, the ball went over to Team B. The question seems to be, should/could the officials have done something to correct the fact that Team A was misled as to the correct down? The only rule that directly addresses errors relating to downs provides: “The referee shall correct the number of the next down prior to the ball becoming live after a new series of downs is awarded and prior to the declaration of the end of any period.” This rule does not seem to address the situation presented here. So, what do you do if you’re the Referee here? If I were wearing the white hat here, my thinking would be that I can’t let Team A be disadvantaged in a way that potentially impacts the outcome of the game due to an officiating error if there is any way I can avoid that result. And there is. Rule 1-1-6 is part of the “God Rule,” and provides: “The referee has authority to rule promptly, and in the spirit of good sportsmanship, on any situation not specifically covered in the rules.” I would then put the ball back at the 2 yd. line and replay 4th down.
  17. I’m sure someone is already looking closely at this, but I would really like to see something that cross-references NIL opportunities with transfer portal activity. You see where this is going, right?
  18. He follows former Butkus Award winners Manti Te’o and Jaylon Smith to Notre Dame. It’s worth noting that both T’eo and Smith then won the Butkus Award at the collegiate level, too.
  19. For my money, she stole the show in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
  20. Michigan will run the ball down their throats. It won’t be pretty. The question is whether Michigan’s defense can limit TCU’s big plays. TCU really depends on those.
