Bobref Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 The playoff lineup will be announced in a few hours. Somebody left out that shouldn’t be on the outside looking in? An undeserving team got in? Does the bracket set up great for your team? Who got screwed … and why? Post your observations here, as we head toward the National championship game. Quote

Post your observations here, as we head toward the National championship game. Question as I have not played close attention. What has the committee said about seeding in terms of how it relates to potential rematches? Will they switch the dominoes around to prevent IU/OSU, Bama/Tennesee, etc part 2? Penn State showed well for themselves last night and shouldn’t be punished for playing an extra game but can the committee, with a straight face, keep them in front of OSU? OSU won the head to head and showed better against Oregon IN Eugene. Also, what’s the difference between SMU and Indiana? Seems like similar resumes to me. Why is Indiana seeming like a lock, despite not playing in its conference title game, whereas SMU’s inclusion is in doubt? Edited December 8, 2024 by temptation Quote

I don’t recall anyone speaking publicly about that issue. But I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this wasn’t something discussed behind closed doors. Quote

So I don't see it being off the wall to place Penn State in front of the Buckeyes. Didn't Penn State have the ball inside the Ohio State 5 yard line and somehow come away without points twice. I'm sure the committee will look at those things. EVERYTHING has to be taken into consideration. It's easier for the committe to justify Alabama bumping SMU rather than Indiana. We're talking about the Big Ten vs the ACC. It's a 'no contest.' Look anyone in their right mind knows that SMU should get in over Alabama. But the committee probably has some pressure on them to do the right thing financially for the playoff. We'll see if they expose themselves. Quote

So, IF the Ohio State/Michigan game was played in September and Ohio State/Penn State was in November, it’d be different? Penn State also was gifted a pick six in that game which put them up 10-0. Head to head HAS to matter more so than any other metric when all things are considered. Last year, FSU was outraged that Bama got in over them but the Rose Bowl proved the committee right as they gave Michigan a better game than anyone else on their schedule. Quote

I thought I heard a report within the past couple of weeks that committee would not engineer the bracket with the goal of avoiding rematches. Quote

Last year, FSU was outraged that Bama got in over them but the Rose Bowl proved the committee right as they gave Michigan a better game than anyone else on their schedule. But at some point, winning games has to matter. I don't want to see a team who's already failed three times, twice against unranked opponants. If SMU didn't play in a conference championship game, we wouldn't even be having this conversation. So why penalize them when Alabama had the luxury of sitting the weekend out? Damn, before last night their only loss was to a pretty darn good BYU team. Most of their games they won in convincing form. It would be an atrocity for the committe to leave them out in favor of Bama. I do think games in the latter half of the season should hold a bit more weight than games in the first half of the season. So yeah, it wouldn't hurt my feelings to see Penn State over Ohio State...........unless the only thing that matters is the eye test. Using the eye test, I'd say that Ohio State is a little better than Penn State. But if body of work over the course of the season matters more, than maybe you have to give Penn State the nod. Afterall, they earned their way to the championship game while Ohio State was watching from home. Again, do you punish a team for play in a championship game? Quote
Bobref Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 Well, well, well … . This is going to be really interesting. Quote
PHJIrish Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 IU at Notre Dame. It seems a shame that one of the state's CFP teams will be out after the first round. Alabama out, SMU in. One three loss team, Clemson, was enough I guess. No one seems unbeatable. Quote
Irishman Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 The conference commissioners set this system in place to benefit themselves. They set up the automatic bids for the top 4 seeds. Arizona State finishes the season ranked 12th, but they get one of the byes. Two things happen after this. The playoff expands to 16 teams. That would eliminate 99.99999999999% of what has been discussed this entire weekend. No byes and the top seeds all get a home game, and no need for locking in automatic bids for the top 4 seeds. 2 Quote

PHJIrish Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 December 20th, 8PM, should be a huge advantage to the home team! Lots of time to game plan and get healthy! Of course that works for both teams. It looked like IU was the better team early on in the season, but the Irish got a lot better as the year went on. It won't be easy, but the Irish should overcome. Fans from the state of Indiana, especially those who aren't alumni, have the freedom to root for whoever they want to. They were spoiled for years by having the #1 brand in football, and depending on the decade, the #1 brand in basketball. I hate to tell you Temp, but there are fans all over the country who gravitate toward all teams in their respective state. Our fans are no different. Do you think IU and Notre Dame care? Of course not, it's the fans who support the universities more so than the alumni. So the more the merrier. 1 Quote

People can choose to root for whomever they wish. Hell, 10-15 years ago folks gravitated to Butler basketball. Front running at its finest. It’ll die off (pun intended) eventually though because neither IU basketball have won anything of significance since the late 1980s. Edited December 8, 2024 by temptation Quote

At the end of the day, these coaches are paid pretty good money. Put a good product out there or cease to get support. Quote

If you're too loyal, you end up with a shitty product. Look no further than the Cubs and the Bears. Sellouts no matter how pitiful. No incentive to get better. Everyone should be bandwagon for what these coaches are getting paid. For instance, Assembly Hall should be empty during games. That might get the University's attention. And I’ve lost interest in a 9th place B10 football team to even care. 1 1 Quote
