I was a Butler fan way back in the 1960's  It was easy to get a ticket and see some top notch teams come to the Butler Fieldhouse.  Remember Jeff Blue and Gerry Williams?  I saw Michigan, DePaul and Ohio State and more play the 'Dogs.  Then they get a bit better and go to a couple of final fours, and now they charge $10 just to park in the Fieldhouse lot for high school football.  It seems they've gotten the big head.😝

You have no idea about who I am or why I choose to root for whom I do.

”Walmart Wolverine” is so played out.

When we betting on the 2025 OSU/Michigan game?  You’ll eventually be right one of these times.

You married, lol?

I get you don’t like it, but “Walmart Wolverine” is never played out…don’t fight it…just roll with it…

Well, yeah. What's the relevance?

We need to move on from this "I'm a fan of this team because" nonsense. And the "you can only root for one team" absurdity.

Just wondering how this statement would translate to marriage, lol.

“If you're too loyal, you end up with a shitty product.”

I like the White Sox AND the Cubs, the Mets AND the Yankees, Alabama AND Auburn.

Just sounds asinine to me.

Except IU and Notre Dame aren’t rivals. They’ve played each other twice since the 50’s, last occurrence in 1991. There’s no conflict of interest rooting for Notre Dame football in the fall and IU basketball through winter and spring, especially for non-alums of either school which make up 99% of the “reversible jacket” crowd.

And there are a few of us who are alums of both institutions.

Meh, let's stick with college for comparison sake. Alabama/Auburn is an awful comparison. They're in the same conference, both public schools, and they're rivals. Notre Dame and IU are in different conferences, and they're NOT rivals. Neither Fort Wayne nor Indianapolis have a major college residing in there city. I'm not counting PFW and IUPUI. It's easy for those residents to gravitate toward both, one public and one private. A football power and and basketball power. It's really not that difficult to understand if you really think it through.

Why is it okay for high school fans to gravitate toward teams from their area when their favorite team bows out? What the hell is the difference?

Notre Dame is my passion, and the only university I support financially on a regular basis, but I root for all Indiana schools. I'm proud of that. Love seeing Thad Matta make Butler relevant again.

It’ll die off (pun intended) eventually though because neither IU basketball have won anything of significance since the late 1980s.

What would you define as significant? Is only the National Championship significant? Are Big Ten regular season champions, National Championship game, Final Four not significant? Just trying to determine where the goal line you have set is, because if strictly winning the National Title is the only thing of significance then you are correct (and a lot of teams fall into that category).

Indiana in basketball were Big Ten regular season champions in 1991, 1993, 2002, 2013, and 2016.

Indiana Basketball reached the Final Four in 1992 and 2002.

Indiana Basketball reached the Championship game in 2002 losing to Maryland in the National Championship 64-52.

Significance differs based on tradition and history.  One program’s definition differs from another.

Indiana fans love to cite “banners” when inserting themselves into basketball discussions so it’s title or bust.

North Carolina, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, and UCLA are not out there bragging about conference titles…nor should Indiana.

Can’t have it both ways.

Hell, they FIRED Tom Crean despite him winning two conference titles.

(I’ve gotta hand it to you though…”we made the final four in 2002” is one helluva flex.)

LOL, was never a Crean fan but I’d imagine in hindsight IU would take him back in a heartbeat.

Initial thoughts on the bracket...

1.  On paper, the top half looks brutal, whomever comes out of that one will definitely have earned it.

2. Still unsure how you can rank Penn State ahead of Ohio State and SMU in front of Clemson with a straight face.

3. Gotta revamp this one in the future as it seems Penn State BENEFITTED from losing the Big Ten title game and got a better draw than Oregon.  Just seed it and pick the best 4.

4.  Is 12 actually TOO many?  Though I see it going to 16 long before they consider 8.

5. Notre Dame's draw.  An Indiana team that they should beat followed by Georgia who has questions at the QB position.

How is everyone feeling?

I think it's the right number. Bracket would look a whole lot better going forward if you scrape the 5th highest CC automatic qualifier and eliminated first round byes for the 4 highest rated conference champions.

Seed the field based on the final rankings 1-12.

So under that proposal, Clemson #16, wouldn't have made the field as the 5th highest rated champion.

First round byes: 1 Oregon 2 Georgia 3 Texas 4 Penn State

Opening round games: 5 ND/12 ASU, 6 OSU/11 Alabama, 7 Tennesse/10 SMU, 8 IU/9 Boise

Fair enough. That is why I asked what your criteria is for significance.

When it comes to this game between Indiana and Notre Dame. I personally am and always will be a Notre Dame fan, so I will be cheering on the Irish no matter what.

Indiana has been fun to watch through the season when I have had the chance to watch them. At the risk of being proved wrong I think Notre Dame will have the upper hand in the trenches both Offensively and Defensively and that is where it will be decided. I will eat my crow if Indiana proves me wrong.

I mean, there are no hard set “rules” one must follow as a fan and I assume the loser of the IU/ND game will likely pull for the winner to go on and win it all.

I loved the Butler basketball story when they were the little guy but never considered myself a “fan.”

Pulling for someone to win is normal and as I turn on games in which I have no rooting interest as if doesn’t affect my favorite team, I often find myself siding with a team based on various things as the game progresses.

Interesting proposal....not that my opinion means much, but really struggle with Boise and ASU getting byes.

I think the whole concept of conference championship games will need to be evaluated as well.  Not only can they end of being disadvantages to the teams playing in them, asking much out of fan bases to travel that much in Dec.

Over my dead body lol. I'll root for Georgia before I root for Notre Dame.
