Carmel High School Brings Athletic Extracurricular Extravagence To New Heights

Quote

Flashy, renovated gymnasiums, weight rooms and football fields have become common at Indiana high schools. Swimming pools? Not so much.

But Carmel High School, which has set state records with 38 straight IHSAA girls swimming titles and 10 straight boys swimming titles, has always been ahead of the pack in the pool. Now, they're setting the bar again — this time, with a new, $55 million natatorium.

....

The new natatorium, which Carmel opened with a Dec. 27 invitational, was in the works since the 2019-20 school year. Construction began in June 2022, kicking off a 31-month building process — plus the additional six to eight months of renovations on the old natatorium that start this week.

...

The facility, attached to the old natatorium, consists of two floors. The ground floor features locker rooms and a hospitality classroom that looks to the pool deck, while the upper features a large concourse, sculptures hanging over the stairways, space for 1,400 spectators, concessions and a seating area that will overlook the old natatorium when boards are taken off the windows.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the east end of the natatorium, shedding natural light on the entire facility — a rarity in most swimming facilities. The pool is a stretch 50-meter pool, meaning there is some extra room. The diving well, separate from the main pool, sits on the west end.

...

But there are several details that might escape the average spectator.

The opposing bench has a ventilation system behind it that pulls chloramines — chemical compounds that cause poor air quality — off the pool deck. The upper deck also has a separate ventilation system, meaning it is a few degrees cooler than the pool deck -- a feature unique to this project, Inskeep said. Every seat in the stands has a view of all 10 lanes, which is uncommon among natatoriums. And the large concourse allows swimmers to do dry-land activities like crab walking and plyometrics in the facility rather than academic areas as in the past.

There were several reasons Carmel built the new facility, Inskeep said. The old natatorium was 26 years old, leading to rusting doors and other forms of corrosion. Renovating an existing pool is difficult because it displaces swimmers, Inskeep said -- made even more difficult considering Carmel Swim Club has 500. The club grew from 220 swimmers 16 years ago to 500, meaning that swimming in the old facility was a tight squeeze and left elementary school kids practicing as late as 9 p.m.

The project was financed through bonds, Inskeep said. From the district's perspective, he said, this allows projects like the pool to move forward without additional taxes on citizens.

...

So entire government elementary and middle school buildings can be built in the $55 million range. And what  is the deal with this Carmel Swim club, is it a public or private entity?  How can it have the influence to get the local school board to issue these bonds for such a boondoggle?

Oh, and boo hoo on "rusting doors" in the old swimming pool.  You can replace those for a lot less than $55 million, can't you?  Unless you are at Carmel where maybe those doors are made of gold....................

I used to swim in the old pool every night during my hoot owl shift as a janitor of the athletic area in 1974.

There are several very impressive pool facilities in Indiana. Several Indy-area schools have 50-meter pools. They may not have all the features this Carmel pool has, but they are still very nice. The size of their swim club and HS swim team justify having two pools.

Why can't this Carmel Swim Club build their own pool if they are so large?

Maybe they did? The parents in the club pay property taxes. If the community supported the new facility, there really is not anything to complain about….especially if you don’t live in the community.

Private entities can issue public bonds? Where is that stated in the Indiana code?

And if a citizen of Carmel doesn't care about swimming why should he have to pay for a private entities fancy dancy swimming pool?

Isn’t this infringing on politics?  Majority of voters in Carmel want something, they elect the politicians who choose where the money goes.

Not trying to get into a pissing match, but this guy is bitching to bitch.

This is why I avoid countering a point you make purposely. You throw things into a discussion that people do not say. I was not speaking in a literal sense, and you know that. Have fun with the rest of your conversation.

Sorry that you always turn such a blind eye to government overspending and waste.

Does the will of voting people matter to you Muda?

Even if it didn't align with you personal vote?

Does that carry any weight at all?

Please show me the results of the public referendum the Carmel Clay Government School District held regarding the building of a $55 swimming pool for the use of a private organization.

How does pointing out government waste and abuse make someone unhappy?

I’ve read enough to see you are unhappy.  Didn’t take long.

We don’t care.  You do.  Are you even a community member of Carmel?  If not, why do you care?

Nice to know you are an internet therapist.  Do you work for Betterhelp?

I don't support government waste, whether it is in my community or other communities.  Why do you support such waste?

No. Just a follower of Jesus who can see these things in people.

I do not like government waste either, but it’s their money/bond being used.

Didn’t know my following Jesus would cause you to burst into flames/use the “kill me now”

It's not me who needs to worry about the flames pal.

Yeah, it’s not like any other youth/feeder programs anywhere use their local school district’s facilities for anything.

So being a "follower of Jesus" grants you special powers?

Exactly.  And those private youth/feeder programs should be paying up as well.

If you are speaking about empathy, love, care, honesty, etc, sure.

Not sure how long you've been on GID or understand the history, but public funding of sports facilities and belief in God are 2 areas that bring out passion in Muda.  Be warned of the rabbit hole you are entering.......
