Gaylord Perry was a great pitcher, but a lousy hitter, as was common among National League pitchers. They didn’t have the DH then. One day he was in the batting cage hacking away, trying to hit a home run, and his Giants’ manager, Alvin Dark, was laughing at him. “There’ll be a man on the Moon before you hit a home run,” he said. Years, later Perry did, indeed, hit a home run. The date was July 20, 1969. Perry’s homer came just about an hour after Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong touched down at Tranquility Base.
