I don’t think the analogy is particularly apt. Pontiac was a suburb of a city in decay: Detroit. NWI is a suburb of Chicago, a thriving destination city. But any building can become obsolete. Who knows what amenities will become routinely available in “30-35 years.” Obsolete structures get abandoned/demolished/re-purposed all the time. 35 years is a pretty good lifespan for a structure of that sort.2 points

Probably the worst take I've seen in the history or the GID. Dude has more heart and desire in his left testicle than you've ever had in your entire body Pat.2 points

I saw on one of the Kentucky high school football sites that Doug Preston was hired as the new coach at Jeff. He was the coach at John Hardin High School in Elizabethtown for the last several years and Franklin-Simpson before that. All told, he's been a head coach for at least 20 years and very successful throughout that time. Nice hire for the Red Devils.2 points

The DOE has finally released enrollment data from the fall count day for the 25-26 school year. This year is the second of a two year alignment cycle, so these numbers will be used for realignment this spring to set classes for the 26-27 and 27-28 school years. I am sharing this data to give an idea of the enrollment numbers. Note that there always seems to be a few schools that have slightly different numbers when the IHSAA releases their enrollments for classification in a realignment year. Schools with an * did not report their data to the DOE, so their enrollments are listed as the same number they gave the IHSAA in 2024. I am only listing the schools in order by enrollment and not including any projections for the split between classes. This data also does not reflect any potential success factor changes. Here are the enrollments for the schools that play 11-man football. There’s enough smoke coming off this that I think it deserves its own thread, separately from the Bears’ on-field performance discussions. Here’s the most recent story I’ve seen. Some people are putting a lot of thought into this. https://www.fox32chicago.com/sports/gary-indiana-renderings-chicago-bears-stadium-sites Gary, Indiana, releases 3 renderings for potential Chicago Bears stadium sites By Chris Kwiecinski Published January 16, 2026 1:16pm CST Gary: A city once written off is now back in play for Chicago Bears Gary, Indiana is now back in the conversation as the Bears search for a new stadium site. GARY, Ind. - The city of Gary, Indiana, has furthered its efforts to bring the Chicago Bears to the Hoosier state. The city, as it continues "aggressively pursuing the franchise," has identified three sites where the Bears could build a new stadium. "Back in 1994, the Chicago Bears saw potential in Gary, and we have never forgotten that vote of confidence," Gary Mayor Eddie Melton said in a statement. "Thirty years later, Gary is even better positioned. Gary’s proposal gives the Bears the tax certainty and stability that the organization says is key to success." What they're saying: According to a press release, the city of Gary's Stadium Authority has identified three sites they call "Plug-and-Play sites" the city considers ready for immediate development. These sites are: Gary West End Entertainment District: This space is adjacent to Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana. The release notes this is the state of Indiana's highest-grossing gaming location and offers "immediate synergy with a proven entertainment hub." Buffington Harbor: Like Soldier Field, the Buffington Harbor offers the Bears a stadium on the waterfront. The release describes it as "a premier waterfront opportunity with established infrastructure and quick access to multiple modes of transportation." Miller Beach: This site is adjacent to the Indiana Dunes National Park landmark, which garners three million annual visitors and will give the Bears a "stadium experience unlike any other in the NFL." These renderings come after sources told FOX Chicago that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was seen visiting potential stadium sites in Northwest Indiana the same weekend the Bears hosted the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Wild Card round at Soldier Field. Goodell was also seen touring the Arlington Heights site. The Bears have pledged not to use Illinois taxpayer money on a new stadium, but the franchise said it still needs public funds for infrastructure improvements around the site. On Friday, the Village of Arlington Heights and Illinois state leaders held a press conference that urged the approval of a Mega Project Bill aimed at supporting large-scale developments, which includes the Bears’ proposed stadium project at Arlington Park. In the release, the City of Gary calls these three sites a "natural habitat" for the Bears. "A move to Gary isn’t just about a building; it’s about building a dynasty," Melton said in a written statement. "There’s a reason we call this region Chicagoland. Gary is just 30 minutes from downtown Chicago—closer than Arlington Heights—minutes from the Gary Chicago International Airport and uniquely positioned with waterfront views straight to Chicago’s skyline. No other location offers this combination of proximity, identity alignment, and iconic visual connection to Chicago". Unlike Arlington Heights, we have support of local, county and state leaders."1 point

I know next to nothing about any of these schools. That’s why I popped in and now I can’t leave. I’m here to learn. Thanks all.1 point

Thanks for the tip, but no thanks. Several years ago my spouse and I each spent $20 playing slot machines in the casino of a cruise ship. It really wasn't fun and we both felt kind of dirty afterwards, like we had wasted our hard-earned money. If I ever get the urge to gamble I'll play Las Vegas Poker & Blackjack on my Mattel Intellivision.1 point

There’s no doubt the creation of the infrastructure needed to support such a project would be a real boon to an area that could use it. I’m sure this is the case with such projects everywhere, but based on my past experience, if a facility like this were planned for Gary, the number of people with their hands out (both above and under the table) would be daunting.1 point

Purely speculation. Because it happened in Michigan, doesn't mean it has to be the case everywhere. Additionally, you don't talk about the revenue and opportunities it brought it over its life. (31 years) That region of NW Indiana needs a big time kickstart. Investing in its infrastructure may be exactly what is needed to lure other business investment into the area. Its not going to happen without some level of investment. I get its a risk....but one worth taking into an area that needs it. At the end of the day, no balls, no babies.1 point

Initially, an ingenious plan going to mid major programs. They fly under the radar until tourney time. The size of those bets though is insane. It was those bets that triggered the red flags.1 point

This is pretty much the route we've taken with our boys. They played for "club"/"travel" teams, but these were associated with the local high school rather than with a region. The boys played ball with programs that fed into LCC/Jeff as well as Harrison. The boys play with the kids they go / went to high school with. At the high school level, they played on teams that were conglomerations of the local high schools. This summer my youngest will play on a team with kids from Harrison, LCC, and McCutcheon as well as a couple of kids who played with Harrison in the youth programs but are now at schools like Frontier and Seeger. The oldest boy did the same in high school playing with kids from BC, Harrison, McCutcheon, Twin Lakes, Delphi, and Jeff. While there was aleways the temptation and opportunities at times to play with some of the franchise programs, in giving the boys the ability to make the call of where they wanted to play or even try out, then consistently came back to playing with their classmates and kids from the area that they knew. The younger one has had opportunity to play with some franchise teams on an ad hoc basis like in the off-season for a single tournament when his team wasn't active or in a tournament after his team had finished their season, but the local "club" approach has been good for the boys and the family. Like you mentioned, much more reasonable cost, a couple of over-nighters, pretty much most travel limited to instate or just across the border in Illinois and Ohio and coaches that believe in sometimes taking a break for family things. The camaraderie for the high school teams isn't bad either.1 point

Of course, all that came in before the $$$ crunch, so we'll see if it continues. Attucks is supposed to finally get a real gym at some point. They play in a middle school gym. Seems like IPS could crowd fund that gym given the historic nature of Attucks and the 100th anniversary of the school's opening in 2027.1 point
