  1. This is a fascinating topic! I absolutely believe there is a shortage of coaches out there. I have been coaching for 10 years. When I started, I had no kids just a girlfriend. I went from jv/varsity football straight into junior high basketball and back to varsity track. Now, I have a wife and 2 kids and only coach football. The number of guys you see come and go is crazy. From the first staff (8 total coaches) I ever worked on only 1 of those guys is still coaching. None of which retired from teaching yet. My personal experience with schools hiring practices is mixed. When I was a tiny Jr./Sr. High they only cared about hiring a teacher not a coach. Now I’m at a slightly bigger school and hiring head coaches is important for the school. I remember being interviewed at numerous schools in central and northern Indiana for coaching and/or teaching positions and the administration was concerned because I am from southern Indiana and went to college in southern Indiana so would I stay long term. Those schools went in other directions and many of them have hired the same position numerous times including one school which is on its 3rd head coach since I interviewed only a few years back. Then of course there is the financial situation many young people run into. The assistant coaches don’t get paid enough. The time commitment can be daunting for some people, especially with young families. And one of the biggest factors is the parents. Some parents are crazy! There are so many factors. These are just the few I think are the biggest.

  2. So does Hammond Central (previously Hammond High) Move up to 4A or stay at 3A with 1700 students. Morton is already 4A. By the wording of the news release Central would stay at 3A?? All it is is a name change.

  3. If Merrillville is 5A, that's a major, major change. Portage, Chesterton, Crown Point and Lake Central do NOT have to beat Merrillville just to get out of the sectional.? That's sunshine on a rainy day.

  6. He’s going to be hard to replace. His 2016 team was heads and tails ahead of any 3A and “Success Factored” 4A team at the time (in 2016, traditional 4A teams like Cathedral, Columbus North and New Pal had already moved on to 5A). In 2016, Concordia was an absolute MACHINE. As an ancient EIAC guy, I felt terrible that Lawrenceburg drew THAT short straw. Even last year, he came up with a game plan (minus, perhaps, his top offensive player) that fought Chatard (who ended the year as the 6th ranked team in ALL, repeat, ALL classes per Sagarin) right down to the very, very end. To be clear, the 3A State Championship games last year were ALL played in the North between Chatard, Concordia and Mishawaka Marian (the Lucas Oil “State Championship” game was an afterthought.........thanks Tri-West AD, btw). Not that it needs reminding (but I will), the 3A State Champion defeated the 4A State Champion during regular season play..... Back to the point, BIG SHOES need to be filled at Concordia.

  7. With the consolidation of the Hammond high schools, and the addition of Dugger Union in 22-23 (needs to be included in the upcoming cycle), I think there will be 318 schools with football. That puts 32 in 5A and 6A, 2 of the lower classes with 63 and 2 with 64. I am not sure if there is an IHSAA policy on which class should have fewer schools, but in basketball they usually align 1A with the most and 4A with the least. The plan I read for the Hammond schools was to realign the district to split their enrollment somewhat evenly, which would put them around 1700 or so students in each high school. Here are the numbers I have (slightly different from crimsonace). 6A Enrollment Carmel 5414 Ben Davis 4617 North Central (Indpls.) 3754 Warren Central 3690 Fishers 3689 Penn 3430 Hamilton Southeastern 8. Reitz High School announced its 2021 football schedule yesterday and will play in what is being called the “EVSC Bubble”. The Panthers will play the other four EVSC schools twice for a total of eight games, but will not play any of their other SIAC rivals, including Mater Dei. “We wanted to keep the kids as safe as possible this fall while still allowing sports to be played,” according to Reitz head coach Cory Brunson. “While we’re disappointed to lose the Mater Dei game, for the safety of the kids, we felt this change should be made for at least the next five years.” 2021 Schedule 9/3 – Bosse 9/10 – @ Central 9/17 – Harrison 9/24 – @ North 10/1 – @ Bosse 10/8 – Central 10/15 – @ Harrison 10/22 – North For more information, please visit the EVSC’s COVID-19 Resources page.
