Right, wrong, or indifferent it’s a free country, you can choose to do whatever you want, but you can never escape the consequences of those decisions. I would also say it’s not just purple hair, gages in the ears, a hog ring in the nose, etc., poor grammar, poor social skills, and other non-appearance factors will also cause people to dismiss individuals. I will admit I’ve said more times than I care to remember made it known, I don’t trust people with a week handshake. After teaching my kids to be polite and say please and thank you, it was one of the first social skills I taught them, how to shake hands, and to never trust anyone that gives you a limp fish. Other tools like looking people in the eye when you’re talking to them, speaking up, being clear and concise, many of these skills are being lost as our society moves to less personal forms of interaction.

From what I understand, the rules in the senate are up to the senate, the constitution is largely silent. As we saw in the house the party in power can basically make it up as they go. Sometimes I think the guys in the back just get bored. My guess is the guy (and I say guy because no gal would ever) manning the Chyron generator was just having a little fun. When we generated hazardous wastes I had to write up some incredibly long boring manuals that no one would ever read and they had to be submitted to IDEM for review. I used to slip some stuff in the middle of that just for my amusement.

I would agree that thought provoking questions can be asked. Minds changed.....ehhhh I don't know about that. The largely visceral interactions that have gone on via the Internet since day one do little to change minds, quite the contrary I think it only serves to entrench people deeper in the their beliefs. They tune out what they don't want to hear. As an example, I have a bunch of liberal friends on FB and they post all this political crap which I largely ignore. One day a friend makes a post about the Charlottesvile and goes on to opine that speech like this has to be silenced, it needs to be made illegal. I couldn't help myself, I had to reply. I was immediately barraged by her legion of 50 something recovering soccer moms, and several other classmates. Of course several unfriended me, which is fine, I don't determine my worth by my collection of FB friends. So my point being, no one wants to hear what they disagree with. They only want to be in an echo chamber with like minded voices. As time marches on, I see this becoming more and more the norm. As our visceral interactions online are spilling over into actual real world interactions. I think minds change over years, from various inputs, most notable wisdom and experience that comes with age.

Americans really should revisit the metric system.
