Couldn’t this describe Penn in the 80’s and 90’s? Penn was the desirable “suburb” of South Bend….became way larger by enrollment than anyone else in the area. Add to that an all time great coach. Huge successes Penn should always celebrate. Calling Indy suburbs Johnny come lately is myopic.

No disagreement with either of you from a Penn Football perspective. My post was more centered around something that might actually have a chance of happening that would benefit both the NIC & NLC. I think the chances of the NIC becoming a "somewhat better" and "smaller" conference (to allow more non-con games) would actually have a realistic chance of happening.

I've posted often about NIC/NLC/Etc conferences up north.....way past time to adjust. Looking at just current NIC/NLC, I think this would be a significant improvement: NIC (7 teams - 2 6A, 4 5A, 1 4A): Penn, Elkhart, Adams, Concord, Goshen, Warsaw, Washington. Plenty of opportunities to play out of conference schools for Penn. Gives them Concord & Warsaw annually, so pick up a DAC, SAC, and an Indy/Out of state team. Goshen will be in the same position they are in the NLC. NLC (9 teams ....*or 8 teams - all 4A except Marian): Marian, Mishawaka, New Prarie, NorthRidge, NorthWood, Plymouth, Riley, StJoe, Wawasee. This would be a sluggfest of a 4A conference. If it goes to eight teams, could still schedule multiiple rivalry games agaisnt former NLC'ers in the newer NIC. *Now the rumor for a while is that one of those NLC teams wants out...but NE8 nor NECC aren't willing to take them (don't ask me how accurate that is). If it happened it would bring the NLC back to 8 teams.

From an outsiders perspective, I feel like Penn has two issues now that they didn't have in the early 2000's and before... They no longer have a significant enrollment advantage over most of the other Indy metro schools. Sure they are a top 10 sized school.....but most of the Indy metro schools are within a few hundred kids give or take. And a few have outgrown Penn. The "local" competition up North isn't what it used to be....and it wasn't always great back then. (and the changes to their schedule this year are puzzling...no out of state powers like they used to schedule, no Indy schools?) This is my outsider perspective, so the Penn faithul are welcome to call me out...I would fully defer. Gees was an alltime great, but I don't feel like Yeoman and the rest of that staff just forgot how football worked?

I'd rather see schools be forced to split once they become a certain size🤷‍♂️

The same size issues at the top of 6A are at the bottom of 1A. I'm a fan of making the top and bottom classes the same size and then dividing everything else up evenly. .....and no p/p in 1A😁

"True North" Indiana is 20 years late on MAJOR realignment in all athletic conferences....I would include the SAC & DAC in that...althought those conferences are "healthy" conferences....they could make a few changes and be really solid conferences. The driving distances/time change issues are just an excuse. Both metro Indy schools and "rural" schools have way more driving on the average Friday night.

(caution, I still rememeber college Statistics)😇 We are talking about "teams"....not individual "players". Keep in mind, the population of Indiana is larger today....big high schools are, well,... "bigger". In 1980, there were about 5.5 million people. Today its at (or close) to 7 million, around a 25% increase. If we are talking about the top 1% of athletic genetics in the that population... In 1980 that was 55,000 people Today that is 70,000 people You can extrapolate there are 25% more "great" players playing high school football today to fill out the rosters of high school teams. Even if the quality of each individual player is more or less the same. The one statistic I don't have the effort to look up is the number of IHSAA members schools in 1980 vs Now. Although I don't suspect its gone up 25% (as population has), especially in the biggest classes.

When I was at a smaller school we actually liked the move to Saturdays. Was hard to do get ready for Friday on Monday's when most of the staff and all your 2's (and a lot of special teams guys) were still at a game for "last week's" opponent. Was still plenty of time to get things done after that 10am JV game (and I was a coordinator). I agree 100% on the Thursday night Frosh thing. If you are a smaller staff, doing JV & Frosh at the same time would be difficult. For a while (mid 2000's?) we used to do JV/Frosh double headers on Saturday's with some schools. That was a long day, and it didn't last long for good reasons.
