Out of curiosity where do you find the Jasper stats? As far as MaxPreps is concerned they have only played 1 game all year? Should we organize a GoFundMe to help get Internet to Dubois county?

Best/Worst Sectional Draws
oldtimeqb replied to scarab527's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
If Owen Valley were to win, then Vincennes would need to win @ Gibson Southern and @ Owen Valley. Two road games against the two undefeated teams in your sectional is a tougher draw than GS/OV who would at least get one of the first two games at home. I'm curious what would be everyone's preference for a team like Mt Vernon? Draw an undefeated unknown (out of conference) opponent in OV or an undefeated conference foe they had already lost earlier? I guess it depends on how you fared in the previous meeting, but I would think out of conference would be better. -
What if the sectionals were seeded?
oldtimeqb replied to crimsonace1's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I would think if coaches had an idea of 2-3 teams who they might play, getting final confirmation on Saturday/Sunday for the next Friday would be ok. Gone are the days of meeting an opposing coach in a truck stop or McDonald's parking lot to trade VHS tapes. A few clicks, and film can shared digitally. It's not much different for some regionals and semi-states already. Team A can win Friday night and have to wait until Saturday night to know which team wins the other regional/semi state. -
Thanks for the info. That would have been my guess. Based on past experience I knew any field in SW Indiana was possibility on Friday before Coach Goebel would take a Saturday game.
-
MD will play Friday, field TBD. They have ‘hosted’ first round games at North Posey and Gibson Southern in previous years IIRC. I would imagine they will host at Central, since they are playing at Reitz. 5A has a week off, so both North and Castle would be available as well.

Did you not listen to the lyrics? They were 5-0 coming off a win over Jasper. So it was 2014. You were probably just busy listening to that catchy hook line, Linkin foo-ball. Linkin Foo-ball.

Thanks for completing my thoughts. Yes. The IHSAA wants an all-in tournament and no teams left out. Notice they intentionally call it the ‘IHSAA tournament’ and not playoffs. And I am not advocating their position - I would like to see some sort of qualifier and seeding. I’m just noting that all-in and blind draw are joined. You can’t have one without the other.
-
The older I get, the more I realize all-in necessitates the blind draw. Seeded sectionals with all-in would result in dozens of first round games like this one. At least in a blind draw, Pike Central can draw Washington rather than both of those teams getting blown out by Vincennes and Gibson Southern. (sectional 30)

Reitz, Mater Dei, and the Castle/Memorial winner will all finish with better records than the Alices. North is heavily favored to finish 5-4 as well. It's tough to finish 4th/tied for 4th in a 10 team league and claim to be top 1/3. In a band contest 60-70% of teams can claim to be top tier, but this is football.

For those concerned about Sagarin, the first two weeks should give us plenty of connections. Lower third SIAC Harrison plays a top tier PAC school. A middle third Lincoln squad faces the Greatest Show on Turf. Mater Dei will face a sectional opponent with a better record in the first round. And week 2 features Castle playing New Albany and North playing Floyd Central.

Congrats to Coach Gerber. I knew he had a couple of lean years his first few there. Appears they have been quite the contender in 3A north the last few. Edit: I thought he was a Norwell alum. I don’t think that is true

Aren’t both teams on Central? Why the early start?
-
Can you remind me the 1st-10 from the 25? There was a dead ball penalty on their defensive possession, which is why they spotted it at the 25? And it should have been 1st and goal from the 25, correct?

Field Turfs suck
oldtimeqb replied to MarshallCounty's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I fully agree that more scientific study on this issue needs to be conducted. Research across multiple sports and including HS, college, and professional teams. I think there is a place for intelligent discussion and analysis of the data surrounding field turf and injuries to the lower extremities, especially the knee. I'm just not so sure this is the place. 🙂 -
You stay classy, Dawgs.

New Schools/Programs
oldtimeqb replied to DumfriesYMCA's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
Spot on with your assessment. But man, you would have had a blast at my sister's wedding talking like that. 🙂 -
A lot of it seem like pettiness just for pettiness' sake to me. It wasn't an issue in 2020 (Covid year) where both sides were limited to 250 tickets. The health department hasn't set a cap, but there still may not be too many more on the home side Friday. At least in red. I wasn't around back then, but how did Harrison/Bosse handle the seating arrangements prior to Romain's construction? Looking up north, how did things turn out for Broad Ripple HS after Chatard moved away and stopped using their campus/facility?

There are some days I wish Memorial was still playing 3A. And there are some days I REALLY WISH Memorial was playing 3A. lol

There are two things that impact the ratings, although I'm not a math guy enough to figure out exactly how much they impact. 1. The rating systems use a legacy measure of some sort. I think Calpreps (and maybe Massey) have some sort of input to that effect. For example, 2021 Evansville Central was positively affected by its 12-1 sectional championship team in 2020, even though the eye test would tell you that the program took a turn after the coaching change. It might even stretch multiple years by I'm not sure. In a conference like the Hoosier Hills, PAC, MSC, or PLAC where there is a lot of crossover early in the season this goes away. With the SIAC, not only is the conference closed but even Sectional 24 causes issues. Look at Central and Harrison who only played SIAC schools including sectional opponents last year. http://calpreps.com/cgi-bin/2007/ratings_fixes3.pl 2. I think Sagarin more than the other two is dependent on SOS. If you think about the SIAC regular season, every win means a loss for another team. The conference will finish 45-45 on the year. Every opponent's opponent's SOS will be identical. Only your SOS will be slightly different (Reitz can't play a 5-0 team and Central can't play an 0-5 team.) In other words, when Reitz played Central, the lowest SOS team will beat the highest SOS team by a considerable margin. If Mater Dei and Vincennes Lincoln win rounds 1 and 2 in sectionals, and Castle/North don't play each other in round 1, there will still be a lot of fluctuation. Only then would I try to compare the SIAC to the rest of the state.

You’re right. I didn’t catch that first time through.

Interesting concept and I really liked it. But unless Hendrix is playing is a weird league that allows you to play two QB’s or put one at flex then I think he would have to be 4 just by default. I have played in a league like that, so it’s not out of the question.

Definitely some fun stuff, eh. I went down the rabbit hole of Canadian football highlights one night and stumbled across this beauty DonChaKnow:
