  1. Yes and No. As far as SOS and only 1 win against top 64, the answer is yes. EM's overall lower Sagarin rating is due to losing weeks 1 & 2 against teams that are lower rated. Here is what it looks like on CalPreps. It doesn't matter at this point, but I would be curious what the rating would look like if the results in red were different.
  2. Close. For a school with ONE winning season in its 49 year history, a qualification format would be a once-in-two-generation pipe dream. Prior to this year, they had a collective 1-37 tournament record. http://www.almanacsports.com/football/team.php?team=PIKEC
  3. Perhaps the thread title should be ‘David is a myth.’ Because I agree that the David’s of the world (bottom 32) rarely if ever beat the Goliaths. Cinderella still attended the ball and had a blast, but the clock eventually struck midnight. So IMO absolutely a school like Pike Central is a Cinderella story… even if the clock runs out and their season is done. They don’t have to be David on Friday night vs Owen Valley
  4. Great story. Until this week I didn’t realize OV was the only high school in Owen County. OV and their opponent next week, Pike Central, are disproving my theory of single HS county schools don’t have postseason success. (Albeit, Pike Central’s success this year is for a completely different reason than OV) I assume Owen Valley is a consolidation of smaller HS, maybe Spencer and Freedom had separate schools 50 years ago?
  5. I believe Coach Hart went to India and met with the Lama himself, the Dalai Lama who taught him the game of football. Then Coach Hart returned to the United States, spreading the teachings of the Lama to Knute Rockne and Mike Ditka. Then in 2012, he moved to Ft Branch and brought the game to Indiana. HS football never existed until 2012. At least I think that's what I heard.
  6. Hunt (QB) and Johnson (RB) for Vincennes started last year, but suffered season ending injuries in Week 1 or Week 2. That is a huge difference between the 2021 and 2022 version of the Alices.
  7. Your statement doesn't make Tango's incorrect. Simply put - have you ever heard of the IHSAA turning down money? An interested party could stream the game if they had the capability/desire to do so.
  8. My guess is it will be the second Notre Dame recruit in 5 years. Drayk Bowen seems to fit the Jack Kiser mold. Smaller class school coming through the northern Indiana bracket. Plays on both sides of the ball and can dominate games at times.
  9. I was going to ask if this was Buddy Ryan’s ‘Polish Goalline’ defense. Although that play was built on only one stop needed and not 3! And the refs catching it too.
  10. Last Friday went pretty much the way I would have expected. VL giving GS a scare but the Titans ultimately pulling it out. And this is exactly why Coach Hart beefed up the schedule. Making crunch time plays and game winning drives vs TH South and South Warren helped win this game. Anytime it’s a 1 score game late 3rd/ early 4th is a pressure packed situation and GS came through. That is what a tougher schedule gets you, IMO. So kudos on that.
  11. Since the first (and only) sectional win in school history, Pike Central has drawn and lost to Heritage Hills (65-7), Mater Dei (56-0), Ev Bosse (83-23) and Gibson Southern (63-6). No one seemed to complain, yet for the first time in 20 years they win and its a travesty. If you can’t find The Fish Hut on a map, feel free to sit this one out.
  12. 2019 Evansville Memorial did. The 2021 squad was pretty close to getting there as well - just coming up short in the Semi State game.
  13. I meant that tongue in cheek, but I went ahead and crunched some numbers for Sectional 24 to see what it might look like. The SIAC closed conference and making up 6/7 sectional opponents made the calculations a little easier. Results: 1. Reitz 24.8 2. Jasper 14.8 3. Memorial 13.8 4. Boonville 13.0 5. Harrison 5.6 6. Bosse 0.6 7. Central 0.0 (Mr. Blutarsky award) A couple of things I noticed. I think this would be a fairly accurate seeding and very well could be the bracket for the Semifinal Round, with 1 @ 4, and 2 @ 3. The only difference would be the lower seeds are hosts. If only top 4 'qualified' for playoffs I don't think public opinion would have issues with the teams selected. The other thing that I noticed is that Paoli (6-3, 2A - 23 pts) factors marginally better into Boonville's second level than Mt Vernon (5-4, 3A - 22.5pts) and Heritage Hills (5-4, 3A - 21pts). This is because the Big PAC is primarily 3A schools while PLAC is 1-2A. Overall the SIAC schools benefit from beating 4A Central and Bosse. Washington, Princeton, and Pike Central give a lot of win points to Boonville's opponents. Additionally, BV is boosted by Mt Vernon's win over a 1-7 Jeffersonville team. I definitely think any ranking system would result in scheduling becoming an art form. Those traditional 1-2 win big schools are great for playoff points.
  14. Quick scratch paper calculation. Castle beat Ev North Week 1. Ev North beat Ev Memorial (4A) Week 2. Other than that, they share an identical 4 wins over Vin Lincoln (3A) and 4A's Central, Bosse, and Harrison. This means Castle has a better "First Level" win over 5A North, but North has a better "Second Level" win because Memorial ended up 6-3 with 29 win points. Making an adjustment to divide by 9 and 81 (9x9) instead of 10 and 100 (10x10) this is what I get. Castle - First Level 25 points / 9 + Second Level 63.5/ 81 = 9.833 North - First Level 24.5 points / 9 + Second Level 68/81 = 10.278 North (5-4) would be seeded higher than Castle (5-4) who won the head to head matchup. I'm sure an anomaly because of closed conference issues, but an interesting result. But I was told computers and seeding would make regular season results MORE important! 😉
  15. I like the objective/ non score run up methodology as opposed to margin of victory being a key component of a ranking system. Although I don't like the 'win or nothing' component of the system, especially with win points being based on size. I think teams like Jennings County (4A), Evansville Bosse/Harrison/Central (4A), Richmond (4A) and Shelbyville (4A) suddenly would have more opponents requesting to play them. And Jeffersonville, New Albany, and Southport would have their phones ringing off the hook.
  16. 🙂 #Priorities I'm out of 'likes' for the day, but this made me laugh.
  17. I've always been fascinated with the Illinois system, as I have had cousins and extended family compete in IHSA playoffs. 1. Only wins matter (school size is irrelevant until after selecting the 256 participants.) 6 wins and you're in. Usually 80-90% of 5 win teams get in as well. 2. A P/P multiplier is used and only then are the teams put into 8 classes by school size. 3. Once classed, then they are seeded by W-L with Opponents W-L/ Defeated Opponents W-L as the tie breakers. The craziest thing to me is that they do all 3 - select, class, and seed - in about a 24 hour window. Teams do not know their opponent for Friday until Sunday afternoon. That to me would be the worst part.
  18. I find this fascinating. So thanks for sharing. Out of curiosity, how does out of state factor in? Does Elder get more points for beating Roncalli as opposed to Chatard? If my understanding is correct, Elder would also get second level points from beating Roncalli who beat Louisville Male. That’s a lot of tracking divisions across multiple states.
  19. Out of curiosity where do you find the Jasper stats? As far as MaxPreps is concerned they have only played 1 game all year? Should we organize a GoFundMe to help get Internet to Dubois county?
  20. If Owen Valley were to win, then Vincennes would need to win @ Gibson Southern and @ Owen Valley. Two road games against the two undefeated teams in your sectional is a tougher draw than GS/OV who would at least get one of the first two games at home. I'm curious what would be everyone's preference for a team like Mt Vernon? Draw an undefeated unknown (out of conference) opponent in OV or an undefeated conference foe they had already lost earlier? I guess it depends on how you fared in the previous meeting, but I would think out of conference would be better.
  21. I would think if coaches had an idea of 2-3 teams who they might play, getting final confirmation on Saturday/Sunday for the next Friday would be ok. Gone are the days of meeting an opposing coach in a truck stop or McDonald's parking lot to trade VHS tapes. A few clicks, and film can shared digitally. It's not much different for some regionals and semi-states already. Team A can win Friday night and have to wait until Saturday night to know which team wins the other regional/semi state.
  22. Texas (UIL) calls it the Playoff Bracket and State Championship. Repeat it with me: It's the IHSAA Tournament, not Playoffs. And the game played in Lucas Oil is the State Final, not the Championship Game. The people on Meridian St. are very careful with their wording.
  23. Thanks for the info. That would have been my guess. Based on past experience I knew any field in SW Indiana was possibility on Friday before Coach Goebel would take a Saturday game.
