I wonder if things would have been different had Valpo won. Maybe. Merrillville (6A) would have been right after Hobart so that would not have changed things. I guess South Adams/Luers as A/2A didn't warrant consideration to schedule back to back. Then again with COVID restrictions, it would have been a rough year to try to boost attendance anyway.

Tough turn of events there for Pioneer. Not sure I understand the last timeout though. Tackled the player on 2nd down with 1:00 left. But then the timeout doesn't come until :43 seconds left? No chance of a 4th down play losing those 17 seconds. Although it's easy to sit here and say that. I've been guilty of some bad timeouts in the heat of the moment myself, so I'm in a glass house for sure. Just curious if anyone else caught that.

Consider me 100% in the Kick camp. I've just known some coaches who might go for the jugular then but was curious what others think. Glad my thinking isn't off base!

What do you think - you score to go up 7 and the other team always goes for 2. You have to kick and make it 8 pts right? Or would you be crazy enough to go for 2 and make it 9?

Or at least our joke was "They told the IHSAA everybody named Chris was short for Christina." Seemed funny at the time... 🤷‍♂️

I have been thinking about this thread, probably a little too much this week. I am not naive enough to think the keyboard warriors of a message board will have much sway over IHSAA opinion, especially because your post and others in this thread are a little too logical and rational for that. But I digress. One of the issues in this debate is the strict lumping of P/Ps into a one-size-fits-all category. Hat tip to @Esso Ayche for his data dive into the last decade, but notice we are talking about FOUR (4) schools in Ft. Wayne, Lafayette, and Indianapolis and used their success as the catalyst to change the statewide playoff system with the SF points. To Gibson Southern fans like yourself 2013, 2015, and 2016 are all the same. A great team that had their season ended by a P/P school. Never mind that in 2013 it was Brebeuf, 2015 it was Chatard, and 2016 was Memorial. Memorial fans can give a long list of how they are different from the Indianapolis schools, and Chatard and Brebeuf can point out distinct differences between a private Jesuit school and an Archdiocesan school. And all three schools will show differences between Evansville Day, Evansville Christian, Cathedral, Park Tudor, and La Lumiere - other members of the P/P grouping. Pardon the poor analogy, but I assume Gibson Southern would bristle as well to be grouped with East Noble, Western Boone, and North Vermillion with constant banter about how Directional County Schools (DCS) have had playoff success the last 3-4 years. This is one sticking point that prevents discussion every time a multiplier is raised. A second problem with a multiplier is that it would be hard to quantify exactly what it should be. I thoroughly enjoyed @George Orwell 2's statistics refresher although he didn't draw a distinction between which variables are endogenous and exogeneous. (Nerd joke.) Put another way, we are trying to set up classifications based upon success, but success is also determined by the initial classification. Cathedral as a 4A school is much different than Cathedral as a 6A school. But the same could be said for New Pal and Columbus East. Additionally, some who favor a multiplier give no justification for 1.5, 1.6, 1.8. 2.0, etc. The only explanation DT has given for a 2.0 is that other states have 1.6 and 1.85 and it doesn't seem to do enough. Well if Spinal Tap logic is all we need, let's turn it all the way up to 11. I don't want to conflate football success with classification though. If any school has witnessed the impact of non-enrollment variables like a new coach, community support, and administrative support (especially Principal and AD are outstanding) it is GS. Those are big boosts to any program, regardless of enrollment. Not to mention a growing local economy is a big benefit was well. Which leads me to my point and the reason I quoted you. A point you made came up in a conversation I had with my son earlier this week. I mentioned a grade school classmate of his and he remarked, "He decided to go to Signature School, but his sister goes to Memorial." The student in question was a good student, but had minimal athletic ability. And that is the advantage of a non-district school vs. a district school. In a public school, there's a much greater chance that both siblings will be enrolled there, even if one really only desires to be in academics and not extra-curricular activities/athletics. There are athletes at Memorial/Mater Dei who have siblings attending public schools. It has been discussed on this board that a key starter for an Evansville P/P has a sibling who is a starter for a nearby DCS. With your 15-20% estimate, you have at least tried to reasonably capture this self-selection phenomenon. That sounds a touch low perhaps, but I could see the case for a 1.25 if it was backed with evidence and data. A simple multiplier like 1.85 or 2.0, take it or leave it, "just because" argument will be and should be met with resistance.

IIRC, wasn't part of the issue a pre-game Mass and meal at St. Meinrad in 2009? I thought that is what I heard.. a bit of a long-winded sermon and a recruiting pitch to answer a call to the vocation? That might just be urban legend around these parts though. But yes, the roads in and out of the bowl are extremely unfriendly to visiting buses and fans. My family member that needs a walker hates the bowl for that reason alone.

I don’t buy that sectional assignments are too difficult to accomplish every year. Heck, states that have a qualifier system re-do the entire tournament each year. It’s 2020. I’m sure I could find a computer science or math major that could write an algorithm to minimize travel distances in 8 team clusters. An algorithm wouldn’t spit out beauties like Sectional 28 though. That’s why it will never happen.

Western Boone is the best team in the state. I heard they beat the Colts in a scrimmage this summer.

My post was tongue firmly in cheek. I didn't mean it as a slight to Webo but as a criticism of the 2 year SF rule. Because they won state championships in the "wrong" two year window as opposed to Scecina who lost in the state finals in the "right" window. And I agree on the impact. Freshmen at Evansville Memorial set foot on campus this fall knowing they would play 4A football until their senior year, regardless of enrollment which currently sits in the 575 range.

Back to back state championships wasn't enough to bump them up. But by gosh, that regional sure did! Contrast that to Scecina's bump up for losing in LOS back to back years. I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but geez the two year cycle is way too short.

You raise some interesting points to consider. I wonder if it's more or just the same student athletes playing multiple sports? What I mean is that yes, there is no doubt Memorial and Castle compete annually for the all-sports trophies. But if you look at the rosters of the sports at Memorial you will see many of the same names. Lindauer, Combs, and Hart all are currently playing D-1 football, yet their senior years you saw them playing basketball and baseball/track. Three sport athletes. Glancing at Castle's roster from last year, I only see 2 of their 12 basketball players that also played football. Memorial had 5 football players on the roster. A quick glance at the Westside - Mater Dei shows 5 FB/BB players while Reitz's 2019 basketball roster shows only 1 football player. Maybe it's a function of school size? Maybe it's paid for expectations? Maybe it's being surrounded by similar like-minded, driven students? Interesting questions and it's probably some combination of the three. And I personally resemble Weber's "Protestant Work Ethic." LOL

I would guess most of them. There is additionally McCutchanville elementary, which was built just a few years ago when Scott outgrew its walls and was split into two. McCutchanville elementary was literally built next to a golf course. (Or maybe on the golf course as I think the golf course has gone bankrupt and the land has been sold to a developer.) The lives of Evans kids and McCutchanville kids are drastically different.

I don’t think you can wait until the week of- just too many variables. With WB/MD, are you going to call up one of the TH schools, a Bloomington school, or maybe Jasper? Those schools put up their goalpost pads, down markers, locked up the concession stands and locker rooms 3 weeks ago. They have moved on to basketball. But if it’s set ahead time, for example it was set in summer that Bloomington North would host a semi - state, imagine a MD/WeBo game at 1:00 pm and Castle/Cathedral at 5pm. (In a non COVID year of course.) If BHSN happens to advance to semi state - well that would be no different than what we have now with Castle hosting the 5A south.

I didn't realize they set a 10:00 AM start time in the past with Brownstown, so I don't think they have any room to talk. Count me in the camp for Saturday neutral site doubleheaders. Especially now that the state won't set Friday/Saturdays at LOS until they see the teams. Playing Saturday would put MD/WeBo at a day disadvantage anyway against the Luers/Pioneer game that would be Friday night.

Digital scout shows Lawrenceburg as currently have 6 turnovers. Is that correct? 4 INTs, the Kickoff that was misplayed. I guess there might have been another that I am forgetting. But losing the TO battle 6-0 is a tough way to win. Yikes.

I think the coldest game I have ever attended was Nov. 21, 2008. Chatard/Memorial semi-state. In a perfect world (meaning no-SCF) we could have had Mater Dei vs Southridge for the 40 title and Memorial vs Gibson Southern last week for the right to face Lawrenceburg this weekend. That's not the case. Good luck to MD and SR in their actual games.

You just said every school has an opportunity to be successful in football, but some simply choose not to make the necessary investments. Yet in your very first post in this thread your justification of a multiplier is to combat the deep pockets and resource advantages of the P/Ps. I can have the court reporter read it back to you if you have forgotten. So which is it? P/P's have deep pockets and resource advantages that require a multiplier, or every school can be successful but refuse to help themselves? The Southridge obsession with Mater Dei and 2A football is starting to reach unhealthy levels.

I have been a proponent of Indiana adopting the Illinois model for regional and semi-state where the day is Saturday and teams agree on a kickoff time between 12 and 7. (Maybe it's 1 and 7, but still the idea remains.) That is primarily because their tournament is seeded and everyone has to travel, but I don't want to open that can of worms. Our geography based tournament means that regional is the level where the corners of the state really start to get the short end of the stick. Just looking here locally- Mater Dei and Triton Central are about 3 hours minimum by car. The other 2A regional in the south (Western Boone and Heritage Christian) is only about 45 minutes. In 4A Mooresville takes on Evansville Central (2.5 hours) while Roncalli plays MtV Fortville (40 min). The logistics of being the road team is completely different for Sectional 39/40 winners and Sectional 23/24 as opposed to the central Indiana ones. PS - I don't know what @Lysander is talking about. Regional and Semi State games in Evansville on Friday night is always a fun time. 🙂
