I could use a refresher on the endzone rules because I know they differ between NFHS, NCAA, and NFL. Recovered fumbles and interceptions can be brought out of the EZ by the defense. However punts and kickoffs cannot be brought out by R team. I think I have those correct?? On a punt, if a player from K team has a foot on the goalline when he touches the ball rolling dead at the 1 - the ball is at the 1 and not a touchback. This was the discussion between my friends and I, but I think there is some differences between the levels on that interpretation, or maybe I am wrong.

Vanderburgh Health Department has capped crowd size at 500, 250 for each team. I blame ridiculous designs at North and Harrison just as much as anything though. ZERO restrooms and concessions on the visitor side. Common sense says Reitz Bowl and Central could hold 1500 - 2000 but they aren’t going to allow that when there’s no way North/Harrison can. Even bigger issue right now is that Enlow can’t be used.

I would guess most coaches would rather their teams are playing their best in October and not August. It takes a bit for individuals to change their behaviors and adapt to the current situation. Which makes the Honda plant comparison somewhat a moot point. The workers have had several months in the current environment, while the schools are still adjusting. This why I thought summer workouts should have started mid- June instead of post July 4, but that is past history now. We know so much more about this virus than we did 6 months ago. Hancock County has 70,000 residents, which means 7 cases per day ~ 10 per 100k. That's an acceptable number based on the most recent rules of thumb. So I'm sure Hancock County, and all counties for that matter, want to keep or improve (decreased cases) that level of community activity. Fourteen day quarantine is excessive and overly cautious, but it's far from idiotic. Data is showing the virus is much? less lethal than we thought in March, but it can still be lethal. When it's a blanket quarantine policy though, they are erring on the side of caution.

(33% decrease) July 18th: ISDH District 10 (which is SW Indiana, including @jets Dubious County.) There were 104 new cases per day average. Today that is 65. (38% decrease) These numbers are not what they need to be, but they are clearly trending in the right direction. I’m sorry if that offends you or maybe it’s just that we are playing football. We are doing just fine in Southern Indiana without your input. (And look at map @TheStatGuy. Seriously- Farmersburg is ‘southern’?? GMAB)

Short answer: No. We can keep speculating and even distorting things to fit our viewpoint, but all we can do is look at data. Right now the biggest thing is we have entered the last two weeks of Phase 4.5 (set to expire Aug. 27) https://www.regenstrief.org/covid-dashboard/ If you check out the data the state has said is most important (hospitalizations, ICU utilization, and deaths) there are a lot of green arrows in the trend data by county. (Allen County and Lake seem to be the main outliers). The question is if these trends continue, will the state move to Phase 5 and open up games to more spectators.

I agree they should and it seems common sense. I just was wondering if knowing it would be a question asked would force the issue and eliminate the known/should have known issue. As a coach you know the health status of your team. I would be extremely upset if I got a call Sunday that an OL from Team X got an positive result. Because he played Friday night, our entire Defensive Line is out the next two weeks. He played with a pending result because he wasn’t showing symptoms. That seems preventable. But only if both teams and school corporations have the same policy.

Agree completely. That is what is being missed by most discussions. The bus ride and locker rooms are probably the most dangerous places for viral transmission.... at least for guys who don’t play in the tackle box. Why add another touch point/close contact when you don’t have to?

Question/suggestion Based on what I have seen, heard, and unfortunately experienced with my son’s team thus far, I think it would be completely appropriate for the white hat to ask each coach pre-game, ‘Do any of your players currently have pending COVID tests?’ They ask about proper equipment, casts, wraps, braces, etc. If a player wakes up Saturday morning with fever, chills, etc., that is one thing. But given that Indiana is only testing symptomatic people and their close contacts, there is no sense tempting fate. If a player has taken a test and has not received a negative result, he should not play Friday night. It seems like common sense, but that seems to be in short supply. I’m fairly certain some teams have had players show up to practices only to find later they had been tested and it turned out positive. Why take the risk of dealing with that aftermath, when it seems a short question could prevent it? Am I way off base on this?

I agree myocarditis can be a serious complication of most viral infections. Does the Jewell still have the portajohns on the visitor side? Back of the envelope math, but 250 fans x $5 a person x 4-5 home games amounts to $5-6 grand. Unless they are gold-plated thrones, I can’t imagine they would cost that much. Then again, I’m not in the porta-potty business, although I have been told I’m full of it....

From what I have read, those design flaws at Harrison and North may come back to haunt them. A complete disregard for visiting fans (no bathrooms or concessions on their side) will cost them money/fans this year.

(PS - This is not directed at Foxbat, whose opinion I respect. I just saw the two above photos, along with the students in front of a Georgia HS at least 30 times on social media the last two days. I believe the photo in front of the HS was from the schools public social media post and the students were aware of the photo. I'm not sure you could argue that any of these students knew they were being photographed and published.)

Kyle Sokeland on twitter clarified that each section of Bleachers could hold 250 people. I would assume that the 250 would also be < 50%. My interpretation of what IHSAA has said: If a bleacher section has 20 seats in a row and 20 rows, the maximum capacity for that section would be 200. (50% of 400) If the section is 30 rows, the capacity would be 250 (even though 300 is 50% capacity.) Again, these are my interpretations of the capacity. There appears to be 13 sections on the home side/ endzone of the Bowl. How Reitz will make sure there aren't more than 3,250 people in those sections?? They got 2 weeks to figure that out! LOL

I had not noticed that either until now. But that is the only way the math works. Not sure who they are trying to fool, but Feb. 15th isn’t ‘Spring’ on a calendar, and I sure as heck wouldn’t want to be outside in Dekalb or Chicago that time of year. There are 11 Friday nights between Feb. 15 and May 1. Presumably you need the first two for a intrasquad and a scrimmage. They will not be coming off summer workouts like Indiana teams currently are, so they will be starting from scratch 2/15. That leaves 9 more Fridays before May 1, the length of the current regular season. Any playoff tournament games would come at the expense of the regular season. My guess would be no playoff at all. Since the ‘Top 32’ qualify for the playoffs, there is no current geographic or district structure. One last problem with Illinois. Try selling to Indiana basketball fans that you are stopping after sectionals in February (exactly what happened Spring 2020) so that you can have a football season right afterwards. See how well that would go over.

New year - new conference schedule for the SIAC. Some new opponents, some new coaches, maybe some new rivalries forming. Should be fun week in and week out.
