  1. Harbaugh is a good fit for any NFL team. He’s a very good X’s and O’s coach. He struggles with recruiting and player development which aren’t at the top of the ladder or concerns for an NFL head coach. Surprised Harbaugh hasn’t gotten an extension after taking a huge pay cut only to finally lead Michigan to the playoffs, must mean the NFL talks are serious.

There were empty seats at the top of the student section and in the northwest corner of the stadium.  Saw it with my own two eyes.

If there were empty seats, there were very few. There were empty seats most of the third quarter because the concession lines were a joke. IU was completely unprepared for the crowd at hand. They ran out of bottled water by half time and it was over 90 degrees.

WIC is Western Indiana Conference.  Think east of Terre Haute and you will be in the general area.  Its a very strong and underrated football hotbed in Indiana.  The fan bases there are very strong at Owen Valley, Sullivan, Greencastle, South Putnam and others.

This is the area that runs its own Wabash River Valley Football All Star Classic in June, 3 weeks before the IFCA event in Indianapolis.  You will rarely see state champion come out of rhis area but they are big football fans and love their schools and their teams.

There is talk that Terre Haute may add a third school and remodel and downsize TH North and South, basically making them all 3A or 4A schools.  They would likely then join the WIC and the conference would expand to 14 schools, with 7 in the Big (Gold) division and 7 (Green) in the small division.

    Probably something like this

    Terre Haute North   4A

    Terre Haute South 4A

    Northview            4A

    Edgewood          3A

    Sullivan               3A

    Owen Valley       3A

    New Terre Haute  3A

    Brown County   3A

    Indian Creek    3A

    West Vigo       3A

    Cloverdale    1A

    N Putnam    2A

    S Putnam    1A

    Greencastle   3A

Why wouldn't Terre Haute just consolidate a la Elkhart?

“2013 Under Armour All-American. ...Named to the IFCA Class 5-A junior All-State Team as a sophomore. ...Older brother Montez Robinson signed with Georgia out of high school. Older brother Armonze Daniel signed with Marshall out of high school. Originally from Alabama...Invited to "The Opening", an all-star summer prospect camp held on the Nike Campus.”

I seem to remember James being a half brother of these 3, but I can’t back that up.

Didn't Sampson James have a brother play out West?

Again, not arguing that, just wondering IF he had to do A-B-C-D-E-F-G to earn that 8 mil a year, whereas he could go to LSU and only do A-B-C to get 8 mil a year (or more).  Again, just an example and thinking out loud.

I am not comparing HS to big tome D1 football, but I have seen schools say you can get paid X amount (same as the top coaches in the conference), but you have to do A-B-C-D-E-F, etc.  Whereas those other coaches did not.

I'm not sure what all was in Kelly's contract. Notre Dame being a private school doesn't have to release or divulge into contract details or finances. I'm sure his contract was written similar to most big time college coaches, base salary with incentives and performance bonuses, etc.

    Not arguing your statement.

My question is (for any coach and his salary), what ALL does he have to do to earn that salary?

Could a coach get paid say $8 mil a year, but have to do weekly radio shows, tv ads, whatever....

whereas a coach at school b, only has to coach, be the closer on recruiting, and face of the university.

I think Kelly was paid fairly at ND. He's a top 3 coach in college football and maximized his potential at ND.

As Temptation and others have repeatedly stated, it's a numbers game in college football. The teams with the best talent win, period. There's no amount of money ND could pay Brian Kelly that would change ND's recruiting fortunes. They are limited in the type of recruits they can admit into the school.

That’s right, ND peaked the last two years, and won’t be a factor in the championship 4 ,going forward. The loss to Cincinnati this year was the handwriting on the wall for ND’s previous coach.  He’s smart , and if his goal was to win it all, he knew this was his obvious move. If it wasn’t his goal then at his age, it was for $$$ only. I’m in the camp of championship reason.

Don't think $$$ was a factor for Kelly. Been venturing into some ND message boards and info coming out that Kelly's yearly compensation package the last few years has been between $7.5-$8.5 mil/yr. He was paid handsomely and one of the top paid coaches in college football.

Here are my questions: Was this "mental illness/mental health" created by entitlement?  Or did he always have this mental illness?

Mental Illness is such a sensitive subject as it covers such a wide range of spectrum. But people can and absolutely do live with mental illness and don't act this way when they don't get want they want. Assuming Brown does have some mental illness, he'll likely never get the help that he truly needs if this kind of behavior is continually being enabled, which up until now it has.

Was having a drunken New Year’s Eve debate with some folks regarding the history of football recruiting in Indiana and specifically, the MIC.

Spurred a quick project where I took a look at the best MIC recruits of the “star era” and this was the list (in order) of the top 25 recruits in the conference based on 247 sports.

Just thought it was interesting and would spur some discussion.

    Apologize if I missed anyone.

    MIC Top 25:

    1. James Banks - BD (2002)
    2. Jerimy Finch - WC (2007)
    3. Caden Curry - CG (2022)
    4. Kiaro Holts - WC (2011)
    5. Sheldon Day - WC (2012)
    6. David Bell - WC (2019)
    7. Cam McGrone - LC (2018)
    8. Morgan Newton - CAR (2009)
    9. JB Paxson - CG (2005)
    10. Kris Harley - WC (2011)
    11. Austin Roberts - CAR (2014)
    12. Darrin Kirkland - LC (2015)
    13. Tim Kimbrough - WC (2013)
    14. Cole Brevard - CAR (2020)
    15. Asmar Bilal - BD (2015)
    16. Tayven Jackson - CG (2022)
    17. Joshua Mickens - LC (2023)
    18. MarQueis Gray - BD (2008)
    19. Darius Latham - NC (2013)
    20. Donaven McCulley - LN (2021)
    21. Dyjuan Lewis - PIKE (2010) (pre MIC)
    22. Dominique Booth - PIKE (2014)
    23. Beau Robbins - CAR (2019)
    24. Chris Graham - WC (2004)
    25. Brandon Lee - LC (2014)

Some pretty big busts on this list at the next level if you ask me. Just goes to show that recruiting rankings aren't everything.

Sheldon Day has had a nice NFL career. Bell had a fantastic college career and should be a decade long player in the NFL assuming he stays healthy.

Not to get into the Covid vaccine debate, but if he was SO concerned about the performance bonuses, he shouldn't have screwed around and gotten suspended (fake vaccine cards).

    Right.

He threw a huge temper tantrum yesterday. And while there may be something going on upstairs, people excusing Brown's actions and playing it off as mental illness is why AB has gotten as many free passes as he has. He knows exactly what he's doing and up until now (hopefully) he's always gotten away with it because he is continually enabled.

"A ton of money" to Antonio Brown is nothing.  By consequences, I think @DE was referring more so to the fact that his talent has allowed him to get multiple chances with multiple franchises and he repeatedly pisses it away.

Let's call it what it is.  If you are talented or know the right people (no matter in what walk of life) you live by a different set of rules are will always get more strikes than the general population.

Seems like his most recent tantrum was money motivated. He felt jobbed that he was benched when he was in line to make over a million dollars in performance bonuses based on attainable stats. No doubt Antonio Brown has made a ton of money over his career but I question how much money he really has left and how much longer it's going to last him. That was a melt down for the ages and probably the last time you see him in an NFL uniform.

On a play like this, the whistle is basically irrelevant. The ball is dead when the covering official determines, in his judgment, that the runner’s forward progress is stopped. Doesn’t matter when the whistle blew. Doesn’t matter when he started into the field of play. Doesn’t matter when he started to signal the clock to stop. All that matters is the location of the foremost point of the ball when he determines the runner’s forward progress was stopped.

No. Play until the ball is dead. Then stop.

In your opinion do you think forward progress was stopped too early? I get it if it’s a QB and he’s been gain tackled behind the LOS, but on 4th and G from the 1 in OT, I think the progress was stopped way prematurely.

  13. Gutsy win by Purdue given the opt outs and injuries.

Still not sure Tennessee doesn’t score 100 in regulation with even a semi-competent QB. I counted six miss/overthrows by UT QB that should have been TD’s, not including the two on the last drive when they shouldn’t have been throwing deep in the first place. Heupel was terrible. Tennessee just can’t get out of its own way.

Rutgers is a different team now that Schiano has his guys in place.  They won 5 games this year and are on the way up.

Bielema is building up The Illini quickly.

    Purdue has passed IU

Minnesota passed IU long time ago.

Maryland has better talent than IU but is poorly coached.  That will change.

The rest are out of IUs league.

I think people were expecting McCulley to be anoher Penix.  Thats likely not going to happen.

There was nowhere to go but up for Rutgers, I’d pump the breaks a tad. The Scarlet Knights this year beat:

    3-9 Temple

    5-7 Syracuse

    5-6 Delaware (FCS)

    5-7 Illinois

    2-10 Indiana

Not exactly murders row. They will definitely continue to improve under Schiano but still have a ways to go.

They need to schedule three non-conference cream puffs annually, beat Rutgers/Maryland every year and steal one from MSU once every 2-3 years then hope they get favorable crossovers from the Big Ten West.

That's their ceiling.  8/9 is a dream more than 1-2 times per decade.

And I don’t think that’s out of the question. IU up until this year has handled Maryland/Rutgers most years and has played MSU extremely well the last 5-6 times they’ve played.

The 4 star guys look good on paper.

I also really like 3 star DJ Moore from Snider.  He looks like a future 15 year NFL guy.

IUs 4 stars have not performed under TA.  McCulley is the key to getting this turned around.  I had read that Omar Cooper was reconsidering his committment. Looks like he has signed.  Thats encouraging  What concerns me the most is that all the lower tier teams in the conference are getting better, with the exception of Nebraska.

IU had been taking major steps forward up until a serious setback this year. IU had terrible luck with injuries this year and played the entire season with subpar QB play. Willing to give the new OC a chance to try and develop McCulley before writing of the Hoosiers just yet.

Doesn’t change the fact that their top 20 rated recruiting class was still FIFTH in the Big Ten EAST.

IU’s climb to relevance is simply too steep under the current divisional alignment.

IU is never going to legitimately compete for a B10 title under the current alignment. Still believe IU can be a consistent 6-7 game winner if they continue to recruit at this level and in certain years when stars align muster 8-9 wins.

  18. 11 minutes ago, HHF said:

Thanks for catching that.  I got him confused with Cam Jones.  Cam Williams made one tackle on special teams for IU this year.

This further reinforces my point.  IUs 4 star recruits have not performed.  Pretty dismal actually.  So Im not so high on the 5 new 4 star recruits in this 2022 class.

Compare the offer sheets to guys like Cam Williams, Beau Robbins, etc to the 4* IU has coming in next year.

These aren’t local 4* choosing IU over Purdue and teams like Iowa and Minnesota. These are nationally recruited guys with big time offers.

Too little too late.  I haven't been following that closely  Even a strong class like this is not nearly enough to dig out of the BTEast hole they are in.  I expect another 2 to 3 win season next year and then Allen will be forced out  People will come to realize over time that 2020 was a mirage..  It wasnt a real season.

They signed 7 P5 transfers as well, many who should be able to step in and contribute immediately. IU was bogged down by a horrific OC who had no business calling plays.

    2018     0      4 stars

2019      3    4 stars( Sampson James/Bust  )(Beau Robbins - rotated on DL) (Cam Williams - Future NFL starter)

    2020      1      4 star  (Rashawn Williams - Transferred out)

    2021      2       4 star  (Donaven McCulley - ?) (Jaquez Smith - Did not play)

Cam Williams future NFL starter? Kid couldn’t play his way onto the field on a bad IU team.

NC State isn’t group of 5 but I agree on all other fronts.

Children, specifically those aged 0-22 have been affected by this pandemic in ways which many of them may never fully recover (and probably not the reason many of you think) and we will see the results of it for years to come in terms of academics and socially.

I’m just glad many folks in charge have finally opened their eyes that this virus is not going away and we have to learn to live with it.

Sorry if that pisses people off but enough is enough.

Yes brain fart on my part about the ACC.

Still don’t understand why we are testing asymptomatic, vaccinated players in this day in age.

I feel for the NC State folks who traveled clear across the county, bought hotels and then were informed 4 hours prior to kickoff there would be no game.

Bet they lost out on thousands of dollars.

UCLA should have to declare a forfeit and refund NC State for their troubles. I thought UCLA had a vaccination mandate for all students, staff, and personnel.

Obviously these are rumors, but it’s widely circulating on Twitter that a vote was taken before kick off and the UCLA players didn’t want to play. Losing to a G5 program in UCLA’s backyard would be horrific optics. UCLA was apparently only down to 2 scholarship defensive lineman due to COVID protocol and players being in the portal, but had more than enough players available to play this game if it was a must.

There is a difference between 3A and 6A.  There is a difference in competition between the 2 conferences.  And that was the same discussion back and forth during the Kiser and Bell year.  That doesn't mean I stated the young man wasn't good.....I have plenty of statements on this forum indicating I felt he was outstanding.

I don't care one second about your opinion about Center Grove.  Its your dime.  I've made it clear that I accept the qualifications of those folks for MaxPreps, HSFA and USA Today well over yours.  So you can pontificate yourself to death...as usual.

Its one thing for you to be the forum blowhard...every forum has one.  But you are simply rotten to the core.  And that is a completely different issue.

    Right.

And there’s a difference between playing Pike, Lawrence Central, North Central, etc for half your schedule vs playing teams with multiple P5 players every week.

You really think Center Grove would compete with IMG, let alone beat them?

  24. 26 minutes ago, Bash Riprock said:

that is not attacking or discrediting anyone.....there was a difference between him and Curry.  Those are facts.  I see you left out the repeated times I stated he was an outstanding player.

Kind of like me saying Center Grove had a tremendous and successful season but didn't play a schedule remotely close to some of these 1 loss teams ranked behind the Trojans?

    I wasn't lying when I called you a hypocrite.
