I've read, edited and written a lot of articles. I've read a lot of Pete Swanson articles. But I've never seen this: Lo, “I got a phone call from Jim Kasmarek, New Albany’s head coach. He had spoken with Mike Goebel and Frank Will, and he hired me as an assistant coach. I stayed there for six years.” "Lo" I knew what it meant, but not how to use it. I'm going to try that tomorrow. Sagarin only measures in-state performances. Those out-of-state games can be played with different rules sets. Should help you sleep at night. Do you know when Sagarin started his football ratings?

I met Tim in 2003 as an opponent. Tim was a line coach (and possible DC?), and I was a defensive lineman for Heritage Hills -- I don't remember my statline, but it was my best game: I had a sack, 3 TFL, a batted pass, and a few assists (pretty dang dominant). It wasn't a pretty day for TA -- as crimsonace1 can attest. We scored the first two times we touched the ball. Final score was Heritage Hills 49, Mount Vernon 7 (or something close to that). At that time, Coach Clayton forbade us from posting on TGD -- or even reading it. After graduating HS and going to IU, I became a regular on TGD and then a moderator. During my freshman year in 2004, Tim had us all meet in Fishers at a pizza place (I don't recall which one.) It was TA, DK, Jimmie, TW, me and Dawgie. We agreed on pizza. When the server came, we placed the order and ordered some drinks. Then a pimply faced 10th grader (Dawgie) piped up and said, "Can we get extra cheese?" Laughter ensued. Dawgie got his extra cheese and the rest is history. Crimsonace, DK and maybe Jimmie still are.

I've been a journalist for 15 years. Prior to that I'd volunteer to keep stats with the big book. I enjoy it in a sick kind of way -- football, baseball and basketball. I also do some PHP and HTML scripting. I can't believe Scout and the predecessors dropped the ball on this. With all their development power, they got very greedy and forgot to just make systems which work well. I've thought of a similar venture. I only suggest that you get a system that works as well as paper and pencil, then you offer premium packages for detailed reports and live analysis. This is really ironic. I am tackling this for some updates for the Predictor Tool, so we can predict/simulate matchups from previous years. Using Sagarin's ratings (going back to 1999), the first step is to normalize the data. For instance, Chatard may have a rating of 103.52 in 2023, but Chatard in 2003 could be 98.52. How do we compare the numbers. To normalize the data -- without getting too technical -- we have to compare Chatard 2023 to the other teams in 2023. How much better/worse is Chatard 2023 compared to the other teams in 2023? Then with that, we do some black magic with longitudinal analysis -- that is how do all teams in 2023 compare to 2003 overall? There are a lot of factors to look at -- for example, if in 2003 the 3A teams had a much better normalized rating than in 2023, we need to give extra weight to Chatard of 2003. There are many things which can be looked at. Overall, single-elimination tournaments, especially unseeded, are terrible ways to settle things. I'd say most years the champion is only the "best" team around 75% of the time -- maybe less. 6A and 1A really skew things because you don't have as many great teams. The four-team MLB playoffs were probably the best method to fairly determine a champion. A team had to play well through 162 regular-season games (or however there were previously), then win two series. The NBA is also a pretty good determiner -- all things considered. A team isn't penalized for one bad night, or an injury that crops up at the wrong time. I look forward to updating the Predictor Tool very soon. I'd like to introduce some upgrades as well like historic helmets for every team. If anyone has Sagarin ratings prior to 1999, or access to The Star or Bloomington Herald-Times archives, I'd be interested to see older ratings as well (let me know).

We should be at 5 classes anyway. Trim back the number of teams in 1A, 6A becomes 5A, then add one round to the 2A-4A tournaments called a "Super Regional."

Assuming he has around 40 touchdowns counting his freshman season, or 240 points, Jett will need to average 208 points in both his junior and senior seasons, or 35 touchdowns, or about 2.9 touchdowns over 24 games. Better start drinking that pickle juice!

I need to dig up some of Seifrig's stats. I believe Cole is the all-time scoring leader at HH, but I'm not sure it is documented. I would support an effort to archive all of those end of year banquet stat packets that players used to receive. Probably something to talk to Jon about.

I thought DeLong kinda got shafted... Not sure what you change to get him as an MVP or POY. Jett is of course very deserving and has an argument for MVP. Perhaps the PAC needs a "Newcomer of the Year" award. Just a very talented slate of players. Congratulations to everyone. I'm not sure how winless Pike Central gets two spots though. .... Regarding the lack of a PAC website... I've often thought of archiving the stuff that is still online or can be found, but what's the incentive? Maybe I will if I could get some buy-in from Coach Burch or other ADs?.?.?

Damn. I dont want to look it up, but I think HH is getting dangerously close to the biggest negative margin in school history... at least since the 1980s.

Bcaster said if Chatard goes up 35-0, it will start the running clock? I thought I have seen it said previously that the IHSAA wouldnt allow the running clock during the finals? @Bobref any idea? Hopefully we dont find out. Rough day for HH. We have had our chances though.
