Unfortunately, forgot why the changed the times.

I’ve been told VL complained.   I don’t get why you can’t start at 6:30 when playing VL or Jasper and 7:00 for everyone else.  That wouldn’t be hard at all.

My sources tell me it was less VL complaining than the desire of the EVSC to eliminate fans tailgating. Otherwise, why not just adjust the start times for the VL and Jasper games?  I know several schools were firmly against moving all games to 6:30.

Having the games start at 7:00 pm was always a blessing since it gave others extra time when getting off of work. Especially the people that work until around 6 pm. Hopefully they revert the times back…

Just saw that, I’m guessing Freshman/JV and Varsity are next.

There are still schools that play "Cub"?

Thought that most everyone has conformed to the superior model of "Jr. High" ie. 7th and 8th, making youth only 1st-6th.

Us old-timers still call our youngling teams 7th grade Cub and 8th grade Cub.

Knowing the Memorial faithful as I do, trying to prevent them from tailgating would backfire.  They’d respond by showing up in bigger numbers with more grills, more beer, and bigger speakers.

Besides, what’s the motivation to stop it?  It isn’t hurting anybody.  Is it a liability thing?  Because I can’t imagine the schools would have any.  Is it the belief that it sends a bad message to kids?  Because lots of kids go to college games, too.

Tailgating and football were made for each other.  Stop trying to prevent other people from having a good time…as long as it stays civil and people don’t get out of hand and clean up after themselves.

Jealousy that we have a fan base like we do.

Alcohol is prohibited at EVSC property (as with any other school), so anyone allegedly consuming an adult beverage would have been in violation. I seldom tailgate anymore, but I can tell you the parking lot at Enlow is always cleaner after our games end and the tailgaters leave than it is when we arrive.

Longtime reader, not sure if I have posted in 10 years.

Took me a week to get my password reset.

Central defense had the worst performance in week 1 I have ever seen.

Changing game times to 6:30 is the worst decision the conference has ever made. Rant done.

Picks:

Harrison at Jasper

Harrison did give a 1Q scare against Reitz last week, until Reitz quickly took over the game. Jasper, on the other hand, struggled the entire night against Memorial and couldn’t get the offense going. However, Reitz did run for around 430 yards against Harrison and I expect Jasper will do the same thing and run the ball. Give me the Wildcats by 4 scores.

Castle at Mater Dei

Castle earned a hard fought defensive victory against North last week in a 14-11  slugfest. While MD blew out Central after 1.5 quarters last Friday. Castle was limited with the ball against North having only 21 offensive plays and didn’t even touch the ball in the 2Q. So it’s a little hard to judge their offense so far (Played better in the 2H). However, I think this game will be different for Castle and we will see more offense from them. I also see Mater Dei making this game more of a fight compared to last season’s matchup. I’ll take the Knights by 2 scores in this one

Reitz at Lincoln

Reitz moved the ball extremely well against Harrison without QB Davies in the game and racked up around 430 rushing yards and 49 points. Lincoln opened up an impressive victory against Bosse by winning 46-8 in a game that I thought would be somewhat closer. Looks like Lincoln moved one of their top receivers from last year to QB this season. Both teams did lose a lot from graduation from last season, so this will be an interesting game. I’m guessing it will be similar to the 2022 game in terms of closeness. I’ll take the Panthers by a score in this one, although they are missing their starting FB/LB.

Central at Bosse

Central is coming off a blowout loss to Mater Dei and didn’t appear the hottest. Bosse, is also coming off a blowout loss to Lincoln too and struggled the entire game. Central is still looking for their first win since 2021 and Bosse is trying to sustain the success from last year without Wagner. I have a strong feeling this could either be a blowout from one of the teams or a slugfest of a game. I think Central may have some speed as an advantage. I’ll take the Bears by 3 points and HC Artis gets his first victory.

Game of the Week

Memorial at North

Memorial is coming off an impressive victory against Jasper by forcing a running clock and blowing out the Wildcats in a battle of contenders. As Memorial dropped around 400 total offensive yards against Jasper and moved the ball at ease. The Tiger Defense also stiffened up against Jasper and allowing under 200 yards in offense (this includes the backups). North, even though they lost, looked pretty good defensively against Castle only allowing 7 offensive points (Castle had a pick 6) and allowing 123 total yards. However, North’s Offensive couldn’t do much in the RZ against Castle’s D and couldn’t run the ball. One major positive on the offensive side is the passing game, as that helped North moved the ball a little bit. Also, North has the biggest OL/DL in SIAC, with multiple players above 6’2 280. This series has been pretty equal the last 4 years and Memorial is looking for their first win at North since 2018. North has won the last 2 games at Bundrant Stadium with a blowout and a shutout against Memorial. Maybe I’m biased, but I’ll take the Tigers by 10.

I figure this is as good a thread as any to put this.

For those interested, Branson Combs will be making his P5 debut tonight when Wake Forest takes on North Carolina A&T.  Game starts at 7 EDT (6 CDT) on ESPN+.

He is expected to start at Will linebacker for the Demon Deacons.

On the WREF show, it sounded as if Bosse had trouble snapping the ball (one of the more critical aspects of the game). I'm assuming they will get that fixed so I'll pick them over Central 47-36 in what can only be described as a blind-fold, dart board game.

I suspect Jasper has had a rough week of practice after getting shellacked last week. I will give Coach Sutton credit for enforcing discipline. Not many coaches in that situation would remove a star player from the roster as he did just prior to the first game of the year.  Give me Jasper 26-13. But Lord, if Jasper loses, I imagine Tony Lewis is going to interviewing realtors on Sunday afternoon.

No better way to get the season rolling than taking on a winless program like Central. MD should have some confidence after what was a pretty rough 2023. Still can't figure out that Castle game last week. This week Castle possesses the ball in all 4 quarters and the D brings the still relatively young Wildcats back down to Earth. Knights 28-13.

Similar to MD, the SIAC schedule is kind to Lincoln with a Wk. 1 opener vs. Bosse.  As expected the Alices got the job done and now take on the Mighty Panthers (#discipline), who will be a little short-handed this week. LOL. You honestly can't make this stuff up.  Will that and natural grass be enough to give Lincoln the edge? Maybe, but I'll go with Reitz 27-24.

And now my personal G.O.W. Last year the heat really gassed the Huskies' big boys up front. They were on and off the field the entire night. This week, our prayers have been answered and the heat has returned. As an aside, Bundrant is my least favorite SIAC stadium. No real character and they play this horribly corny "Mr. Sudsey" ad during the game AND they pipe the sound of a barking dog through the PA incessantly. As anyone with a decent education knows, huskies rarely bark. Tiger D is undersized but they fly around. Focus will be stopping the run and forcing North to put the ball in the air. Tiger O is pretty dynamic and forces the D to pick its poison. Tigers 34-10.

Everybody stay safe out there and mix in a water every now and then.

Should be another good week for the away teams. Hopefully the heat does not affect the games too much.

Central at Bosse - Big game for these two teams. I think Bosse will go winless this year and this might be Central's only win of the season. The Bears win by one score in an absolute nailbiter.

Harrison at Jasper - I think Jasper will bounce back in this one. Harrison has some athletes and has shown they can score a bit, but don't think they will be able to stop the Jasper rushing attack after seeing how Reitz ran the ball on them. Jasper by two scores.

Castle at Mater Dei - MD looked good in week 1 but maybe it's just that Central is bad? We will find out. Huge test for MD. I think the Knights win by two scores.

Reitz at Vincennes - Tough call here on the spread. I think Reitz is the much better team but it's never easy playing at VL. And I think Reitz is still missing a few key players. I could see the Alices hanging around for a half but Reitz wins by three scores.

Memorial at North - The Husky defense has a chance to prove they are legit in this one against a very stout Tigers team. I think they keep it a one score game for a while but Memorial pulls away late to win by three scores.

With regard to Reitz missing players, do you have any names.  I saw the stat line with almost zero yards passing against Harrison, and someone mentioned Reitz was all run against Harrison.  Is Ben Davies among the injured?

No idea about Davies availability, all I know is that one of the receivers played QB and that Reitz had 450 rushing yards. The Reitz starting MLB isn’t playing today according to Transplated due to disciplinary reasons. Those are the names I know of.

Yeah their QB will be back next week. And I think they will be missing their MLB/FB and a few OL. However, they do get their good nose guard and slot receiver back as far as I know.

It does bode well for them to establish a good rushing attack though.
