There's the rub. Your definition of major advantage and a coach's definition might be two different things. An organized coaching staff can be put at a disadvantage. In Bob's original question he mentioned it's 3rd and 4. The offense sends in a bigger RB/FB type and he joins the huddle. Is he replacing the current RB or are they taking a WR out and going to play with 2 backs? The offense breaks the huddle and the two backs remain in the backfield. Two receivers run left and two receivers run right. Out of the huddle, the defense is trying to align to cover a 12 man formation - until one of those receivers running left continues jogging all the way to his sideline. I really hope the defense wasn't going to play man to man, or now the DB running with the guy who continued to his sideline suddenly realizes he is wrong no one and there is another man uncovered... the ball is snapped. Yes. I know "Can't break the huddle with 12" isn't a penalty but I think the defense would be completely justified in complaining about it.

2007. The Wildcats beat Memorial to win the sectional 24 (now 32) championship. I would argue the regional was bigger but it was AT Heritage Hills not MV. Very memorable in SW Indiana because the Courier Press ran an article on MV the week leading up to the regional with some inflammatory quotes about the game. In 2008 MV refused to speak to the news media because of it. Ahh, the good old pre-Twitter/Snapchat days. 😃

Laughable Sagarin rating

No love for the Trash 80? I did my best programming with one of those. I also had the snazziest pocket protectors then too, but that’s another story. -
Mt Vernon and North Posey must have been reading too many press clippings lately. It happens with 16-17 year olds. But I will take an ugly win over a loss any day.

4A #1 Roncalli vs 3A #1 Brebeuf
oldtimeqb replied to fenderbender's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
This is the best game of the week around the state IMO. Tough to tell from down south, but are the Guerin scores comparable? 42-14 and 45-21. Seem based on the one common opponent they might be evenly matched. I think Roncalli wins, but hopefully its a good matchup. -
Stat Question
oldtimeqb replied to from_the_sidelines007's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I think it would be a first down. I thought a stat guy told me once Touchdowns are first downs. If you were really curious you could probably look up the stats from the state finals on IHSAA.org. They have the play by play and stat sheets -
Washington, Boonville, and Princeton are struggling this year. Mt Vernon and Vincennes seem to be hot/cold - a great class of athletes every few years. (The new coach at MTV might be able to sustain more than a one year blip but that hasn’t been the case in the last few years.) It seems that with them and Jasper’s success in the SIAC, the Big 8 conference was destined to break apart at some point.

Laughable Sagarin rating
oldtimeqb replied to jakone's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
I'm not so sure. I've heard the IHSAA is not going to give out Sectional trophies this year, but instead "Top 48 Sagarin" trophies at the end of week 10. I could be mistaken though. 😄 -
Looking at schedules, it looks like 3 rematches could be in store for tournament time. 19: Leo v East Noble - Leo won by 8 22: Roncalli v Chatard - Roncalli won by 7 24: Jasper v Memorial - Jasper won by 8 It’s always interesting to see how the teams adjust and play a second time. All three could pose great sectional finals. Ping pong balls could match them up week 10 though. (Looking at you sectional 22)!

The game is on IHSAATV - the Mooresville student TV broadcast. Brimmage was not in the first series, but according to the student broadcasters, "they were just trying to get other players a chance to play." 😃 He did come in the second series.

Awesome! Thanks to all the law enforcement folks in Spencer and surrounding counties. I have been thinking about this all day. As much as I would want a game to be played, the possibility for a fugitive to escape via blending in with the crowd or even worse, hiding out in the back of an unattended pickup truck until the driver returns worried me.

Sounds like they need Special Agent Jess LeCroix and his team from the FBI. In all seriousness I heard from a friend whose 7th grader plays for Memorial (it was Mem/HH playing) that got cleared out at halftime. Crazy stuff and I hope they are caught soon. Hiding out in the woods. I guess they don’t call it The Jungle for nothing.

Jasper paper said Weinzapfel did not play QB last week vs Bosse, but Grant Young did. QB play could impact Jasper’s option game and MD always needs a strong QB to move the ball offensively.

I thought I had mono once for an entire year. Turns out I was just really bored. - Wayne Campbell -
Malaise/Apathy

Thanks for the info. I might have to read that, it sounds interesting. My premise is somewhat similar, I think. I have noticed the shift from parent-centric to child-centric recreation sports. For example, my elementary son has a football teammate who is also playing soccer and fall baseball. Not to mention the sister is in soccer and gymnastics. The parents would probably be great bowlers, golfers, or slow-pitch softball players, but they obviously can't spare one night a week to enjoy any of those activities. The cynic in me says they get their recreation from living vicariously through their kids. Thirty years ago, Evansville was a hotbed for adult slow-pitch softball. At least 7-8 leagues going 6 nights a week. I played on 4 nights and often filled in a 5th night. Now it almost shocks me to drive past (former) Roberts Stadium softball fields and see a game. That field is the only one still in use by the DPR. All of that has been replaced with a youth baseball/softball/soccer complex on the north side. I think people still seek connection with others, just vicariously through their children's lives. -
Has to be yes. Whoever (or is it whomever?) ranks Jasper #1 also has Roncalli #8. I've got a bridge in Brooklyn I would like to sell that guy if he thinks there are 7 teams better than Roncalli in 4A.

Gibson Southern at South Warren KY
oldtimeqb replied to Titan32's topic in The Indiana High School Football Forum
The only guarantee about playing a Kentucky team in Kentucky? The Titans will get absolutely ZERO calls go their way. It's a good scheduling move by Coach Hart. Traveling that far to play, bad officiating, and a tough opponent. Dress rehearsal for all the things that come with a deep playoff run. -
I don’t think so. I would think there is room for a commercial enterprise to broadcast SW Indiana games of the week. I would be curious streaming statistics of a Reitz, MD, or Memorial game compared to the other EVSC schools. If memory serves, the many of the radio/TV broadcasts try to cover each EVSC team at least once a year, even when there really is no demand.
-
Trivia of the week: Mater Dei @ Memorial will be the 14th time Coaches Goebel and Hurley have matched up. Over the last 14 years there have been TWENTY head coaches at EVSC schools. (Bosse - 5, Central - 4, Harrison - 5, North - 3, Reitz - 3.) There must be something in the communion wine.

Looks like a back judge that wasn't sure of the rule and wanted to confer with the white hat before signaling anything. I guess it's better to get the call right than be forcefully demonstrative in your call?

The Pope switches sides at halftime. It’s a whole ceremony.

How bad does Bishop Sycamore have to be to make IMG ‘Academy’ look like the legitimate educational institution?
