There are two chicken/egg or Catch-22 (whichever you prefer) issues at play. Teachers are rightfully upset about the lack of clear direction from most administrations about how they will handle re-opening schools. But administrators feel they have to always leave uncertainty in any communication, because things change so rapidly. We can't give you a plan, because we don't know all the details. And we can't give you details until we have a plan. The other problem is the rush to start school. Honestly, I have never understood the need to start classes July 30th or August 5/6 like here in Evansville. If ever there was a year to go back to the late August (heck, even after Labor day like most of the east coast) start dates it would be this year. The downfall of that is most cases in SW Indiana can currently be traced to people who have traveled outside of the state to Alabama, Florida, Texas, etc. and then returned after a week's vacation. I'm afraid the ill-advised travel won't stop until school starts. Based on what I've read/seen I think NoName County School Corp should announce "School will re-open August 5th for students who have not traveled out of state after July 26. If you have traveled out of state, you are welcome to join us August 10th." I don't know the how/if you could enforce such a thing or even if it would be effective. I would say the same of teachers as well, though. Based on the studies I have read, elementary teachers are more at risk from contracting from a fellow teacher, custodian, parent, administrator, etc. than one of their students. So the same travel modifications should apply to them, which would be met with plenty of resistance I'm sure.

I have heard a lot of coaches/teams call an H-Back in that spot a ‘sniffer’ because ... well, use your imagination. 😂

General question: can anyone find an AAU basketball, travel soccer, or travel baseball tournament that has been cancelled due to COVID concerns since June 21st? I can’t find one. Therefore, I’ve come to the conclusion that you can only catch the coronavirus Monday - Friday at an IHSAA sanctioned event. That’s the only explanation.

I see a weekly rate of hospitalizations that peaked on May 23 and May 30th for ages 5-17, (0.5 per 100,000) and May 23rd for ages 18-19 (3.3 per 100,000). Both have fallen since then.

Kind of a smack in the face to folks from Fishers, Carmel, Avon, Brownsburg, Cathedral, Chatard, Park Tudor, Center Grove, and I could go on. Football players have had life-changing broken bones, ACL tears, etc. We know the risks. We take precautions. We play football.

I'm not sure if anyone from Outside the Huddle ever checks this board out, but I have to say I have been impressed with their work. The last two years in 4A (Evansville Central - Dwenger and Evansville Memorial - East Noble) I have checked out their site leading up to the state finals. They do a great job promoting and reporting NE Indiana football. Kudos!

How exactly does Illinois have ONE 6-man team? I"m curious if that is a typo or a legitimate thing. I don't see any surrounding states that have 6-man teams either, so I'm not sure who they would even play.

Yes. The offensive team always had to move the same direction... away from the right field wall. All kickoffs were toward the RF bleachers, offense went towards home plate. As soon as a punt happened, the offense/defense switch sides. I watched the game on TV. One of the craziest things ever.

Interesting and great news, IMO. I wonder if the sticking point with many non-football playing schools have been numbers or $$? I've never priced it, but I would think cost to outfit 20-30 players could be prohibitive, but I think I read somewhere they might (or already have) a grant? That would go a long way.

Great question. I'm less concerned about contact transmission through usage of the endzone camera. A bigger problem is going to be the camera guy's groupies and keeping them 6 ft. away. We all know the camera man has to fight the ladies off, especially if he is filming with the 31ft Hi-pod. We will need to keep them away from him during sectional time for sure. I can see an opponent sending a COVID-positive co-ed to entice the camera guy of next week's opponent to "swap spit" after the game. You know, take out the end zone camera and the battle will be won. No way for them to game plan without those sweet endzone views from the x2000

At the same time, I saw a post online that the Indy 11 soccer team is hosting a game July 11th with fans in stands. The plans were for coaches and players to be masked when feasible at workouts so it shouldn’t change much.

Honest question. How does a coach (or official during season) blow a whistle while wearing a mask?

It’s actually more on-topic than time zones. Lol It sounds like the coaches pick the site the week of (or weekend before) the neutral site game? The issue (problem?) with Indiana is that as soon as football is over, ADs and schools are eager to move on to basketball. Heck, look at Triton Central who forced MD to kick off the regional football game at noon because they had a girls basketball game that night. I think finding a ‘host’ would be the biggest issue. To do it, you would have to allow schools to bid/offer to host like what happens with basketball and volleyball. So while equal distance may not be perfect, at least fans would know if we win, we will play at XX high school.

Presumably they have the school’s permission. Are they allowed to broadcast road games as well? Do they need IHSAA permission? I’m just curious, and I’ve heard way too many ‘unlawful dissemination of today’s game without the express consent of Major League Baseball’ disclaimers. I am just wondering.

I completely respect that sentiment. I would respond, is that player going to see his grandparents at a July 4 barbecue? I will have a son playing this fall. He is lucky enough that all four of his grandparents are alive. But unlucky in that only 1is in the category of low enough risk that will actually come to see him play (and wearing a mask). I would advise the other 3 to stay home. In the words of my now-deceased grandma, defend yourself when necessary but don’t go looking for trouble either. I have a friend who coaches FB in another state. They had a player drown swimming in a lake 2 weeks ago. He was going into his senior year of HS, and in past years would have probably been at summer workouts at that time instead of swimming. Is it less tragic than had he died of COVID-19? I want football games to happen and make them as safe as reasonably possible. Let parents and adults make the decision should they want to attend.

Also the only state in the union who refused to change times for decades to keep the cow milking on the same schedule. Indiana is a central time zone state pretending to be an eastern one.
