  1. Umm statistically any given year a sectional has a 25 percent chance of being represented at state.
  2. Game Day for Classes A to 4A. Post scores and updates from across Indiana here. Prefer Twitter? Share with us @gridirondigest using #TGD for an auto reshare.
  3. I'd wager you can't find a HC in Indiana that would agree with you, especially given the extra reassurance that Southwood doesn't have COVID-19. Every coach I've heard has said they want to play if it can be done safely.
  4. Even a broken clock is right twice per day. Computer rankings which report margin of error or confidence should be trusted more. But a rankings system that only looks at games played and two teams have no connected opponents, I don't see how a rating can be given without caveats...
  5. Probably if they are following the model of the UFC and testing everyone and testing everyone frequently. For the WS, the players, coaches, umpires, support staff, etc. probably aren't allowed out of their hotel unless it's to get on a bus.
  6. After Week 9 1. Central (9-0) 2. Southridge (9-0) 3. Jasper (7-2) 4. Gibson Southern (6-3) 5. Memorial (6-3) 6. Castle (5-3) 7. Mater Dei (5-4) 8. North (5-4) 9. Tell City (6-2) 10. Boonville (4-3) HM: Linton-Stockton (6-3), Vincennes Lincoln (3-6)
  7. Oh, I had that 4A team ranked No. 1 in SW Indiana last year all season, just as I've had Central, despite early calls for North to be there. Also predicted Memorial and Mater Dei would end the season much higher than they began. Regardless, it's still probably Central or Jasper's sectional to lose. Jasper won't win another 4A sectional title until they are pushed out of the current geography or they have a losing record in baseball under Terry Goebert. Forever cursed for dismantling the Big 8 Well rooting against Jasper has never been hard, so hopefully this won't bite me in the rear in a few weeks.
  8. I assume the IHSAA and Lucas Oil have been in touch with relevant Marion County and state health authorities to see what real effect emptying and "cleaning" the stadium between games would actually do to thwart the spread of the virus. It's not b exactly like every surface will get sterilized which makes social distancing the bigger concern... I'd be quite surprised if they can fit six games in two days with a policy of emptying and cleaning between games.
  9. No computer rankings can be accurate with closed conferences. If seeding is ever supported by the coaches, teams must play at least 2 or 3 non-conference games. This leads into other possibilities like splitting conferences and making week 9 or 10 with a 10-week season (not game) a conference championship week where MIC North #1 plays MIC South #1...etc. But again, it's the coaches and ADs and principals who would have to push for it, not the IHSAA.
  10. What happened to the kicker from Columbus, or was it Brownsburg? Didn't he go to Florida and projected to play in the NFL?
  11. I stand by my statement. Lol. In all seriousness, that spreadsheet could be a nice table with school logos using tables in a text editor like Word (can be exported as a PDF and turned into an image file).
  12. Basketball makes it work. Are all the regional and semistate hosts at schools which would feed into those rounds? For instance, Washington hosts a 3A basketball regional, but it's the same regional they would play in if they win sectional.
  13. Teams outside of the Top 32 have never won a state championship and Sagarin correctly predicts around 78% of winners consistently
  14. Just eliminate the scrimmage and add in a bye week (5A & 6A aren't allowed to use it Week 9 to eliminate the possibility of back-to-back bye weeks, or make it so teams can choose whether to play 9 or 10 games... As we found out this year, it's not the end of the world if all the teams in the tournament haven't played nine games. I'm not sold on the 10th game or whatnot. TW once ran the numbers and a team outside of Sagarin's Top 32 after Week 9 has NEVER won a state championship -- including the Northwood, Mater Dei, FW Luers teams which had 2 or 3 wins heading into the tournament. Things are more complicated now by the evilness and seeming spread of closed conferences (which would definitely complicate any kind of seeding or playoffs vs. an all-in tournament).
  15. No offense (especially if it was you) to whoever designed that spreadsheet, but as a spreadsheet lover and avid user in my professional and personal life, looking at that although I see why they've colored it that way, just makes my eyes sad.
  16. Massey which I believe to be the best, if you want to factor in out-of-state competition, has Center Grove as a HUGE favorite, a 72-percent win rate and 33-21 score prediction. I'm on the record as favoring Cathedral. And this is why we settle it on the field.
  17. After Week 8 1+++ Cathedral (8-0) 1++ Center Grove (8-0) @DT thinks anything south of Fort Wayne is "southern Indiana..." 1. Central (8-0) 2. Southridge (8-0) 3. Castle (5-2) 4. Jasper (6-2) 5. Gibson Southern (5-3) 6. Memorial (5-3) 7. Mater Dei (4-4) 8. North (5-3) 9. Tell City (6-1) 10. Boonville (4-2) HM: Vincennes Lincoln (3-5), Linton-Stockton (5-3) — Heritage Hills and Reitz are close to 50/50 against these teams according to Massey and CalPreps, but the Panthers and Patriots combined have wins against teams with 11 total wins. Ironically Reitz's only win (by 1 point) against a team with a win was Vincennes. The computers really don't like Mount Vernon against these four teams, despite their win against HH in Week 1. No team-by-team comments this week, except: CalPreps has North 5 points better than GS; Sagarin has GS winning by 9; Massey has it at a 50/50 draw with a median average score of 28-28. I'll follow my gut and take the team that seems to be performing better lately — Gibson Southern. This is especially true if you compare their Recent Sagarin Rating — North 54.11 (#155), Gibson 65.26 (#75). Rankings will continue through the regional this year because of COVID and the closed schedules.
  18. You're wrestling side is showing. I think @Rudy typically posts a seeded tournament (not changing sectionals) using either Sagarin or his power rankings? I'm for the coaches seeding 16 teams in two sectionals, then using Sagarin to seed semistates, so the best teams play for a state title at Lucas and not having semistates often deciding state championships... It dilutes the quality of the state finals and penalizes the second best team if they are arbitrarily in the half of the state as the best team. Semistates would be at predetermined neutral sites and played on Saturday with 2-3 games per site.
  19. Wasn't there a sectional game between Gibson and Memorial played at Harrison (whatever the official sponsor named the field) around 2013? Was that just a case of Enlow being used by Bosse and not wanting to play on Saturday, or were the Titans the home team or maybe a jersey mix up? @tango @Titan32
  20. I bet the losing coach will say the better team won... but does he qualify it with "tonight?" The trolls must be fed!
  21. No idea, Sagarin and I assume all computer rankings like CalPreps and Massey are fubared because of COVID. They should improve through the tournament. In a normal year, I'd say Cathedral has the tougher SoS, but Sagarin would probably say CG does because all the in state MIC games. All speculation. ETA: Sagarin's initial ratings give extra weight to schools in larger classes. Not sure about the others, but CalPreps has a "program prestige" factor.
  22. Names escape me, but was that the year Princeton had some very explosive players and overall better than most other recent Princeton football teams? Sometime near then, I covered a Princeton football game, the Buss-Young finale at Mt Carmel and Southridge's sectional upset of Young's team and her breaking Damon Bailey's career scoring record. Damon, coaching at Butler, couldn't talk directly about Young because of NCAA recruiting rules, but he returned my call and chatted very frankly for around 30 minutes. Gave all he had to basketball until his knees couldn't take anymore surgeries. Respect.
  23. Elephant? "Fila" is what Bishops in chess are called in Arabic.
  24. In on one, predicting a balanced and physical team Cathedral trails at halftime 17-10 but grinds out a 34-31 win after a few adjustments and their experience playing GCL teams. Regardless of the outcome, this game will likely be remembered and talked about for a long time, unless Cathedral 2021 will be on a completely different level making this game less significant in the all-time greats discussion.
