SPARKS
Not a football school, but Borden used to be called the Berries, because of all the strawberry farms in the area. Sometime in the 60's, they changed to the Braves. PC concerns might have them go back to the Berrries. And don't forget....the Dubois Jeeps. The moniker "Braves" is about a generic a term as you can get, it doesn't indicate a specific Indian tribe or region. Guess it would be better to use a super-generic mascot name like Tigers, Bulldogs, Panthers, etc. *yawn* Also I bet few here on the GID actually know what the word Maconaquah refers to, but I'm sure the internet search engine warriors will fill us in. The current HH high school building was built more than 30 years after the Jackson Central/Walnut Grove consolidation, and more than 50 years after Jackson Central was formed from Cicero, Arcadia, and Atlanta. I don’t remember a controversy over the naming of either school nor any controversy over their nicknames. Who can complain about the nickname Eagles? It’s very patriotic. I'm a big fan of nicknames that hold meaning to an area. Speedway Sparkplugs (Pretty Obvious) Whiting Oilers (massive Oil Refinery on Lake Michigan in Whiting) Hobart Brickies (I've heard there used to be a large brickyard in Hobart) Floyd Central Highlanders (I'm guessing it has to do with being on high ground overlooking the Ohio River and Kentucky Noblesville Millers (Old Mill plant in Noblesville) LaPorte Slicers (Meat Slicing Manufacturer) We at Whiting do have a large oil refinery but that is not the source of our mascot. Our mascot actually came from the railroad. Railroad tracks surround Whiting and apparently large dudes called "Oilers" used to oil up the wheels of trains as they were stopped in Whiting. That's why our mascot is an oil can. The more you know... 😄
