Ok first I am not trying to start anything but sadily it probably will happen. I am just trying to learn.

i have heard from a few ppl that if I wanted to send my kid to a private school that my cost is not a set amount but is based on my income.  And if that is the cost how and who covers  the rest of the cost for my kid to be at the school.

Depends on the school. Some offer need-based aid, some offer discounts for multiple children (or a discounted rate if you belong to a parish in the diocese). Obviously, your Indiana voucher covers some of the cost, but usually not all.

The remainder of the cost is covered by donors, or by charging a higher sticker price ... much like colleges, who will give a lot of "need-based" scholarships to bring the price down to where it's affordable.

The majority of private school tuition is typically covered by an Indiana Choice Scholarship. That amount varies based on the school district you live in. The rest of the tuition can be covered by other scholarships, financial aid, or payment plans.

Like college, the cost to attend, tuition and fees, tends to be a set amount ... although that set amount might depend on whether you are a parishioner or in the diocese.  What your net cost ends up being is tied to things like:

  • vouchers ... whether you get one or not is tied to income level and size of family
  • scholarships ... a decent portion of which, in many p/ps are need-based, so tied to income
  • grants ... some of which are need-based, so tied to income
  • parish/diocesan discounts ... some of these are tied to just being a parishioner while others might be tied to level of activity in the parish
  • number of direct family members attending the school or in the school system
  • donor payments - these are also sometimes need-based

If the actual question is how many kids go to p/p for free, it's probably a smaller number than rumors might claim it is.  From experience, albeit only in elementary school settings, we had just the parish discount and the number of kids in the system discount.  This was before vouchers were a thing.  So we ended up paying most of the sticker price.

Always wondered what was the difference between Dwenger and Luers, well, besides the zip codes.

Not for me. I have two children in Catholic schools so I get the multi child discount and some parish assistance. We do get a significant amount from the Indiana Choice Scholarship program, but it’s nowhere near half the cost, and I am not by any measure in a higher income bracket. We pay a great deal out of our own pockets, but for us, it is well worth it.

Tuition-wise, probably not much if they are both diocesan schools. Same thing with Reitz Memorial and Mater Dei in Evansville. Tuition is the same at both. Memorial probably has more funds available for needs-based grants, but otherwise they are pretty much identical.

This. My children attend a Catholic elementary school. Between the voucher, parishioner discount, multi-kid discount and discipline scholarship (attend Mass and Volunteer), their tuition will basically be paid for. However, once they reach HS, the voucher/discounts won't come close to covering the full tuition.

@Bullhorn99and @vicvinegar I said the choice pays the majority, never implied all. Getting 7K of 11K covered is a large chunk and the  majority.

I didn’t say all either. I don’t even get a majority via various aid. Definitely not close to 7 out of 11. But, again, it’s the best situation for my kids so it’s far and away worth it!
