  1. Coached on a team that had a kid with a boot and we attempted a lot of long field goals because we new he could put it through the EZ. It was discussed once to do what you see above, but we quickly came to the conclusion below: It is MUCH easier to block....the more distance the kicker is trying to add...the LOWER the kick will be. Punts are designed to go higher off the foot to make blocking more difficult (if you want him to sky the ball, why are you doing this?). Further, the block point is much closer to the LOS. If you want to move the Tee back to the same distance as a punter, then you better have a really good snapper. The Block (or Tee) is in a fixed spot...and your snapper has to get it right to the holder...somewhat easy to do at 7 yards...back the holder up to 15....things can get dicey with accuracy of the snapper. The holder and block can't adjust for a bad snap, and the kicker can't adjust a few steps on way or the other to avoid a block. Coverage...due to the above, is limited because you can't spread people out and have gunners and still protect the kick. Also, you can really only cover with 9 because both the kicker AND holder are occupied at the kick. If the other team is worth anything....they will have some type of return/hold up and can likely gash you. They can literally put two deep and still have a hat on a hat to block your coverage. Kick direction/fakes/lineman types...."literally" everything you said about kick direction & fakes & body types ("You can literally kick it anywhere from side like to sideline") applies equally to a punt.
  2. Much easier to block than a traditional punt....also harder to cover the return. Although I would argue that as long as you have a kicker with a big leg, trying long field goals has less of a penalty in NFHS...since as long as your missed FG reaches the GL, the opponent gets the ball on the 20.
  3. Doesn’t Indiana already do this? I feel like our Trainer takes wet bulb to determine if we need to adjust practice…I don’t think this is uncommon
  4. Not pointed at you....dissapointed no one else could come up with it!
  5. I heard this (or words to this effect) from Jim Belden many years ago when talking about a kid he had to fire from the pregame coin toss..... "Sometimes you can turn the ball over before the game starts"
  6. Thank you Gipper.....should not have taken this long for the Oracles to show up in this conversation!
  7. Basically*. Kids want to be in Band, Sports, Theater....they fill out a form in August. Total number of those kids is your "clearinghouse" enrollment. Someone smarter than me might have some better mechanics...I could be talked in to an average of last 2 or 3 years. My opinion (and thats all it is), is we should classify schools for athletics based on the number of kids in that school that will actually participate in things. One set of rules for P/P, Affluent publics, small rural schools, and adjust for a lot of things that people on both sides complain about. I think that and the SF create the best realistic system for Indiana. No multiplier, no separate class for P/P...my 2 cents, maybe worth that much. (*Not much different from how DOE counts students....whoever is there on "count day" is what matters.)
  8. I don't have a goal of ensuring anyone's success. I have a goal of counting enrollment based upon the amount of kids in the building that participate in "something"...literally any extracurricular activity.
  9. You are in favor of moving teams down due to lack of success, but not moving teams up because of success?
  10. Not trying to rain on the new staff at Goshen at all....quite the opposite, they (like the previous 2 staffs) have been dealt a tough hand to play in many ways. BUT...scrimmaging Bremen and playing Fairfield can't continue if you really want to change the trajectory of your program. I was shocked when I heard they scrimmaged Bremen....is that who they scrimmaged in '23?
  11. Once again....its not who the P/P schools count. Its who they never have to count. And I say this as a person who is not supportive of a multiplier or class bump.
  12. Using a clearinghouse method of counting enrollment would accomplish this as well....
  13. I'll slow down for you.....that post was a joke referring to a comment about adding all p/p to one tournament (a plan of which I am not a supporter). That p/p only tournament would likely be soley owned and won by Cathedral (after which, I would predict, some p/p's might not have a problem with the ol'multiplier if they could get back into the "big" tournament and not have to be in a p/p only tourney). I very specifically stated I prefer a clearinghouse enrollment count that would be applied to all member school regardless of type (public, P/P, etc). I have had this opinion for several years now and have posted about it often. I'll make sure I use purple in the future..
  14. Actually the opposite....I've voiced my opinion in multiple posts over the years that we should use a clearinghouse method of counting enrollement and apply it to all member schools regardless of being Public, P/P, etc (even in this thread). If you are looking for a windmill to chase....I'm not it, baby.
  15. I'm not...simply trying to point out that the ability to spend $$$ on private coaches, etc is not something unique to Public, P/P, etc. It simply a by product of families with means. P/P's and large suburban public schools tend to have a higher number of these families. Is that earth shattering news to anyone?
  16. Who says everyone at a rural school is underpriveleged? I know a lot of "rural" families that make quite a bit of money... (not trying to be snarky...I think we are saying the same thing?)
  17. This isn't a CYO thing....its a "parents with means" thing. Which P/P's and many large suburban publics have in abundance. Which is why a clearinghouse method of counting enrollment would be the best means of "counting" kids and it would not target any particular "type" of school. It would be uniform across all IHSAA member schools.
  18. Probably have a lot of other P/P schools open to a multiplier and going into the public tournament after that....
  19. Bill Simmons (Used to write for ESPN as the Sports Guy), referred to this phenomenon as the "Ewing Theory"....
  20. Membership in the NLC does nothing for Penn football....and most other sports. Penn should be trying to play CG and Carmel every year while they are still persona non grata around Indy.
  21. Warsaw is almost 30 miles EAST of US 31....They routinely play FW area schools in all sports.... How are they possibly relavent to anything that is labeled North WESTern Indiana!??!?!
