  1. I think there's also a provision for "purposeful fouls" that are expected to extend the period ... like a coach running out on a sideline and smacking an opposing playing who might be getting ready to tackle his back. I know it sounds crazy, but we've seen it before ... and crazier.
  2. If I'm not mistaken, for NFHS, the game doesn't end if there is ANY accepted penalty as time expires ... regardless of offense or defense. In this case here, defense could accept the penalty and offense gets one additional play, with the mark-off, or they can decline the penalty. In the case of declining the penalty, the TD stands and the offense also gets the shot at the extra point attempt. If the game is within 9 points, then the defense is pretty much forced to accept that penalty and give the offense another shot ... with five yards tacked on.

  4. Turned out to be a good one. My son hit a PAT and, in the 4th, hit the game-winning field goal.
  5. I think the Westfield JV kicker hit a 47-yarder ... I think that was the length ... just a couple of weeks ago to give them a 1-point win over Harrison.
  6. Don't know if the game's an upset, but I'm upset. Just messed up my pick 'ems for the week. 🥴
  7. Harrison in complete control ... leading 42-0 at the half over Anderson.
  8. Harrison with another TD. Up 21-0 over Anderson with about 1 min left in 1Q.
  9. I'm in-state, but away from football. At senior night for my daughter's volleyball team. I'll be at Harrison tomorrow though when Harrison's JV takes on Chatard.
  10. LCC vs. Tipton, a pair of Coaches Poll 2A, Hoosier Conference teams, will square off tonight.
  11. Sounds counterproductive given what the NFL has seen in their draftees. In 2020, 85% of NFL draftees played two or more sports in high school and almost a third of them played three sports. https://www.trackingfootball.com/blog/insights-on-2020-nfl-draft-selections-as-high-school-multiple-sport-athletes/
  12. Can attest to this. A couple of my daughters did competitive cheer for a while. The injuries were scary. Luckily, the most my girls ended up with were bruises and sprains/strains. There's definitely a lot of work that goes into it as well. The youngest eventually moved to dance team over at Jeff for a year. The halftime routines are just a small part of it. The competitions were the meat of things. Long, grueling practices and lots of bumps and bruises ... almost like playing football without pads. I'd be remiss if I didn't point out classical dance too. My middle daughter is a classically-trained ballerina as well as picking up other styles over the past half decade. Want to talk about stamina and strength! The life of a ballerina is not for the faint of heart or for the out-of-shape. The first aid kit that we had for her looked like a sideline first-aid kit for a football team with one exception ... lots more Nu-Skin in her kit. My boys did ballet for a while and learned quickly that it was as tough as playing football for the stamina. The best benefit though for them was it gave them quick feet.
  13. I can somewhat attest to this, but it's way beyond just sports. My boys play football and baseball as well as travel baseball. My daughter plays volleyball. In addition, there's also church activities that they are involved in including altar server and youth groups. My wife and I spend so much time driving kids back and forth to events and then showing up for support stuff like working concessions, or breakfasts, etc. I had signed up to play slow-pitch softball for the men's league at church, but ended up having to back out between managing the practices, weekday games, and tournaments. One of the things that I tended to do that helped me do some physical activity was coaching and, in that, I was able to merge community service, sharing an activity with my kids, and getting a little exercise too. My situation might be a bit different from some folks in that I have five kids, so even if I'm just spending a half hour per kid driving folks back and forth, I burn 2 1/2 hours just playing chauffeur ... add into that that I rarely get to just go from one place to the next and I end up with pockets of 15 minutes here and 20 minutes there and a half hour there of time where I can get anything done waiting for the next pick-up/drop-off to happen and I end up burning 3 hours or more just driving around each day. I always tell my kids that my calendar would be so clear that I wouldn't know what to do with all the spare time if I didn't have their schedules clogging up mine. 😀
  14. I suspect, with the new system layout, that the number of reactions is probably tied to level. If I recall correctly, even with the older system, a "newbie" was limited to having to make x number of posts ... I think it was 10 ... before you could start a topic. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a correlation with level and number of reactions granted. The other thing that I noticed with the new system is that, some items carried forward, such as number of posts; however, I think the ranks are based on posts SINCE the new system commencement. As such, 175 posts would normally classify you as more than a newbie, but that's your lifetime posts as opposed to those registered for rank by the new system.

  16. While it sounds like it has some merit, there wouldn't be a "lock" on the Houston area for several reasons. I was a student in the SWC back in the day when U of H was part of the SWC. While U of H had its share of good teams, including a run with Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware, PLENTY of Houston area kids left the Houston area to play ball elsewhere in the state when Houston was part of the SWC. I recall my senior class had about 25% go to tu, 25% go to A&M, about 25% split between SFA and SamHouston, and the remaining 25% split between everyone else including other in-state schools like Baylor, NTSU which is now UNT, SMU, Rice, UTSA,TCU, and U of H, as well as out-of-state schools like Columbia and Yale, as well as the community colleges and armed services. As for the athlete thought process, my opinion on this is, if I'm qualified to attend and play at both A&M or U of H as a football starter, I'd rather play in the SEC for A&M and coming up short as opposed to playing for U of H ... all things equal. U of H is just under .500 for the past 6-7 years under the last couple coaches and less than .400 the last couple of seasons. I don't see U of H jumping in and dominating the Big 12 anytime soon. The departure of Texas and Oklahoma will severely lower the clout of the Big 12. I would suspect that it might be just a matter of time before Iowa State leaves, possibly with a bid to try to join the Big 10, and possibly a smart move for the SEC would be to grab OSU for the sweep of Oklahoma's more prominent teams. If that happens, then as an athlete, I'd definitely take my chances at A&M compared to U of H. By the way, the U of H metro thing is kind of over-rated. Texans tend to think of anything within four hours as "being close by" if you are from the big city. As such, Houston and Dallas are close by" and A&M is just an hour and a half from downtown Houston. For comparison, when I lived in Houston, it used to take me a half hour on weekends to get to downtown and over an hour when I went to work during the week. For kids in Houston, A&M is pretty much considered "local."
  17. I was a student at A&M back in the old SWC days, so seeing Arkansas on a yearly basis was par for the course. It's not quite the same feel nowadays with A&M in the SEC with Arkansas. The A&M-Texas rivalry was a big deal when part of the SWC and Big 12, but I don't seem to miss it as much as I thought I would when A&M bolted for the SEC. In part, I think it's because Texas has been, as @Irishman stated, "average at best." A&M leaving for the SEC has hurt Texas in the recruiting wars. I recall when I moved to Indiana back in 2001, it was almost impossible to see an A&M game unless they were playing someone like Notre Dame or unless they were playing Oklahoma/Texas when those guys were ranked. Now, with A&M in the SEC, I can pretty much catch A&M weekly ... the more recent higher ranking of course doesn't hurt. Texas used to, by default, get so many of the "out of staters" being the "state school" even though A&M is also a state school too. The SEC exposure for A&M, plus their own self-imposed moratorium on playing Texas, help set the tone that A&M was really the visible state presence for Texas. With that said, make no mistake about the Texas branding. It is one of the richest brands, if not the richest brands in the NCAA. The SEC play will be much less about wins, although they would like to have them, as it is about making sure that brand isn't gained on or eroded by A&M. Perhaps that rivalry never really went away ... to an extent I'm being facetious ... the A&M/tu rival will never really go away ... be sure to catch the Longhorn/Aggie tiddlywinks game on The Ocho later on this semester.
  18. This ends up making a lot of sense. You don't see too many of the issues of bodily abuse with shorter yardage situations because of the probability of first down. The other big one is "bomb molestation" where you give up 15 to avoid 6. Offensive holding is traditionally a 10-yard penalty from the spot of the foul. I'd like to see a DPI penalty addendum like the holding penalty rule in the endzone. Maybe this "technicality rule" ends up being enforced when DPI occurs in the endszone.
  19. Texas taking it on the chin from Arkansas tonight. They've announced that they'll play Big 12 until 2025 to join the SEC ... may need those extra seasons to get up to speed with the lower half of the SEC?
  20. Harrison picks of desperation pass. 56-41 with 32 seconds left. Victory formation for a 56-41 win for Harrison. I suspect this won't be the end of the bad news for Jeff this weekend. Last year Harrison's freshman squad beat up on Jeff 35-14. Tomorrow they are hoping to make a bigger statement when the JV squads meet.
  21. Harrison forcefully explains to Jeff that there's a new sheriff in town. 70+ yard drive just killing the clock. Capped with a TD. Harrison leads 56-41 with 2:29 left in game. Jeff has no timeouts left. Harrison scored on every possession this half.
