Wonder why Shortridge doesn't participate in the City Alliance. I know the Marion County Tourney stole Roncalli in 2000 from the City, but it's been pretty peaceful on the moving in front there. Ben Davis, Southport, Pike and Beech Grove are the only teams to play in all 106 boys Marion County Tourneys.

Southport has an excellent athletic department and has had one for several years. The problem isn't the AD. The problem has been the talent level which just hasn't been there in football. They do have some athletes right now as their basketball programs are both better. Getting them to come out for football in the fall may be his next battle.

That's a good pickup for both teams. You get the feeling that Pike could be a team on the rise. They're definitely always fast and athletic, and Coach Brevard has done a very nice job putting together a quality young staff. With Crown Point, you get a team that's building itself into a powerhouse up north. Win-Win for both schools (except for the travel).

What about retired teachers who stay on as coaches? Stan Benge is an example here at Ben Davis. Stan has never been "in the building" because he taught elementary PE.

Just FYI, Coach Whitaker appears to be licensed as a teacher per the educator lookup.

Coach Whitaker's X bio indicates he's a PE teacher. The number of duties, classes, etc. and expectations will be up to Warren.

You don't have "lay coaches" in Fort Wayne...meaning people that just coach that aren't teachers? Warren Central is part of the MSD of Warren Township. I believe Coach Kirschner is licensed in business and health and PE, but don't quote me on that. Coach Kirschner is currently the Athletic Director at Warren. He was the PE Department Chair when he was at Ben Davis and taught business law before he was the HC (he was an accountant when he started coaching).

Congratulations to Mark. As someone who has had dealings with Mark often, I can tell you he's a first-rate individual and not just a great athlete. I'm really excited for him. Great to see so many at the surprise reveal of the award...including past Mr. Football from BD, James Banks.

Interesting hire, but he does have a fantastic resume. I hope the change does him good.

His stats are pretty mindblowing when you consider all the greats that have come through Ben Davis. He's an all-time great. Highest quality character, too.

Exactly. You say it very eloquently. I have to say that basketball still lights a fire in this state like nothing else. I saw Gainbridge full for the 3A & 4A State Championship games in 2023. Southport was full. New Castle was mostly full. People will still come out for great teams and great players (like Flory). It's not what it used to be, but nothing is. I posted a game-winning shot for girls basketball on my Facebook profile and someone came in "Crowd Karening" about 14 years ago. Well, that girls team had won 81 in a row, yeah, people came out to see them! They didn't want to miss it. Great teams can still capture the attention of the basketball casuals more than even football. I think in football, it's more about matchups in Central Indiana. Ben Davis/Brownsburg is usually a great crowd. Ben Davis/North Central...not so much.
