This is a football message board. So it comes as no surprise to me that there is a bias against travel sports, because it's always football that loses out. Like clockwork, every mid to late June I anticipate a week where our QB can't throw because he pitched 14 innings between Friday-Sunday the weekend before. This has happened with multiple QBs over multiple years, so it wasn't a one-time occurrence. As soon as HS baseball season ends, they join their respective travel teams where the coach is more concerned with how many trophies he can post on social media to recruit the next group than the longevity of the player's arm. Would you expect someone to say "That $1,200 we spent on our club volleyball team last summer was a waste of money"? My co-worker told me the first part, but then her daughter got cut from the HS volleyball team. So I interpreted the last part, but that might be presumptuous of me.

My favorite was a local SW Indiana team won a "National Championship" game by beating a team from the across the river in Kentucky. Sorry, but winning a tournament featuring teams that are all from less than a 2.5 hour drive hardly constitutes a national championship. But they got some really cool Cracker Jack rings.

No playoffs. Illinois is a six game schedule only - most teams are staying in the their local region. They might have to play within a designated group of counties as well. That was proposed but I'm not sure if it was the final rule.

Definitely agree with this. I can't comment on the male/female split because I don't know for sure and haven't looked at the data. I can agree that I have seen the growth of the "lay coach" assistant in the SIAC. Many assistants work elsewhere - whether it be a different school or outside education completely.

While we are on the topic of HS OT, can a team be awarded a first down by penalty? For example, Team A lines up to kick an OT FG, but a Team B player roughs the kicker/holder. Does half the distance and automatic first down for team A still apply? @Impartial_Observer @Bobref

If you asked me 4-5 years ago (could have been more, my mind is getting old) when the automatic first down for DPI was eliminated, I anticipated a ton of those calls inside the 10. I assumed most DB's would take advantage and be extra aggressive. It really hasn't happened IMO. There's the occasional penalty - correctly called and assessed half the distance, but I really don't think it has changed the game.

Somehow Illinois not only determines who qualifies for the playoffs, but they also divide the 256 teams into 8 classes and seed the teams.... all in one weekend. Yet Indiana can't figure out how to classify teams every two years. Mind boggling.

When I doubt, I generally look at the coaching rosters and player selections both.

Congratulations to all players selected. I would add disclaimer 1b. At the regional level, each coach is allowed to nominate 4 (I think) players. Combine that with your other points, and yes there are always deserving players who may not be named.

Agreed. If you are concerned about a money making racket selling false hope, I suggest you head west from Westfield HS and check out Grand Park on a weekend. Plenty of empty promises at a travel soccer or baseball tournament.

Apples to oranges. If you are in college, you can enroll in a master's program or find another university via the graduate transfer rules. If I have completed my education at Rural County High, why wouldn't I try to go play at Covington Catholic or Louisville Trinity? Kentucky just can't bring themselves to admit Andy Beshear done messed up. (Maybe I should re-take senior level English? LOL)

I think more SIAC/PAC schools should use "C" teams. In a perfect world, it would be freshmen only. But there's always a few sophomores that really shouldn't play JV because of size or perhaps it's their first year ever playing. In my experience, it's especially true of OL/DL. I would rather see a sophomore who hasn't hit puberty yet get some reps in a C game than sit the bench on Monday nights. That's another thing. Why not play JV/Frosh on Saturday mornings? It's common in other parts of the state but doesn't seem to be popular in SW Indiana.

Any Non-success list would have to include Pike Central. Has the IHSAA football tournament been around in its current format since 1985? 1986? Pike Central has won one sectional game in that time span. Not won the sectional. ONE GAME. So their postseason record is 1-35. If that doesn't define a team that can't be competitive as a 3A school, I don't know what does.

Apologies to you and @Donnie Baker I glanced at the Membership Map https://www.ihsaa.org/Portals/0/ihsaa/documents/calendars/MembershipMap.pdf and confused I-74 with the county line between the two. It appears then Seeger (Warren) is the single HS exception and not Fountain Central. Great point. It's always easier to support a winner.

Good info, thanks. I wish I was better on my geography, but those two counties do seem to indicate my question. Great hypotheticals. Would a 4A Adams County High be competitive in the "Northeast Nine"? Would South Jay and North Jay be 2A powers? Trying to check out the IHSAA membership map, it appears Fountain Central might be the only example I can find of a single county HS having winning teams on a regular basis I don't have a good reason as to why this appears to be the case. It just seems to be a common occurrence.

You and @1st_and_10 want to make it a rural thing. I think @DT's original point and the one I agree with (did I just say I agree with him???) is that schools that are the ONLY school in the "county" rarely have success. Switzerland Brown Crawford Jay Union Jennings Owen Valley Pike Central Benton Central Rushville Connersville I am not saying a rural school or a school named _____ County won't have a good football program. I just can't think of a school that is the ONLY public school in the county that has had football success.

I would add: Benton Central Connersville Pike Central Rushville These schools don't have "county" in the title, but they are the only HS in the county. If you looked over the last decade, you probably count on one hand the winning seasons between all of them COMBINED. I don't think it's a school pride thing, as I'm sure all of these have that. Heck, Rushville even can claim Tony Stewart as a source of community pride. The other thing is that these schools are all 3-4A. Same can be said of Jay County. This leads me to think it's something more along the lines of geography. Because they are the only school in the county, they draw a large number of students, but the economic resources are also spread out over a larger area as well. I don't have an answer as to WHY they struggle, but I think it's more a function of population density/ property tax base. They are 3/4A schools fielding 1-2A level football.

Just mind-boggling to me. I can't imagine going to a HS of 4,000 - let alone 6,000 students. I thought for sure it would have split by now, similar to Fishers/Hamilton SE. Interesting that we are talking about symmetry of classes. I’m thinking they don’t care much. IHSAA just released the boys sectional draw. Some have 5 teams, most have 6 or 7, and a few even have 8. Tell me how that is symmetry for that tournament?

Thanks for the info, Rudy. I knew SIAC had week 9 fixed (neighborhood rivalries) but couldn't remember which weeks rotated. Before weeks 1 & 2 were set as non-conference, weeks 3-6 were the only ones which were conference-only. I remember North travelling to Detroit Jesuit week 8 and Central/Boonville and Mater Dei/Mt. Vernon were common matchups in Weeks 7/8. I hope they can figure out a rotation in the future, which should be easier now that the conference is a 9 game schedule.

I'm assuming based on the below tweet that Roncalli and Cathedral have scheduled a game for 2023?
