tango Posted February 24, 2025 Posted February 24, 2025 I believe the new IHSAA year begins July 8 this year. That may be right after the moratorium week. Quote

Voucher is just a French word the big wigs in Indy use to reduce their bill at (insert private school name here). Careful what you wish for....what "Charter School" will launch a business plan to accept kids from the only place where public schools are an issue (inner cities). School choice is smoke and mirrors. Here is what they will do: Once the inner city public kids have their school shut down but have these nice shiny vouchers in their hands...the Privates within driving distance will jack up the price enough that those vouchers won't cut it. Then golfing buddy of Senator "X" steps in with an inner city Charter School plan (A business) that will gladly accept those dollars and provide an even more crapy experience than they received at the public school. And it's funny how it's never mentioned that around the state of Indiana the rural publics are in the top 25% in the state....if what they are looking for is achievement why would they punish those who get it. The amount of funding publics are eligible for with regard to bonds for projects was cut yet again recently...rural schools use these bonds all the time to make their schools more "competitive and attractive". I am a Republican town councilman and I can tell you right now the Republicans in Indianapolis are going to ruin education in our state. Seems like a one size fits all narrative. In that case June 1st to July 1st is going to be WILD!!! On 2/22/2025 at 10:13 PM, WaffleWolf said: Because Baseball and Softball tournaments go all the way into mid June you would almost have to. Based on this information, the end of a student's Junior year (or 6th semester) should be that July 1st/ first week of July deadline. Again, I wouldn't wait around for that information if I was a prospective transfer (or their parent), I would actively try to obtain that information as soon as possible, however possible. Quote
Titan32 Posted February 24, 2025 Posted February 24, 2025 (edited) I think the IHSAA needs to clarify the language for current Juniors asap...some of these kids have been rejected by some @hole administrator for wanting to attend the school down the road a few miles and would love to benefit from the new rule if they had time to apply to a new school after the end of the school year. I agree...As I read it "during your first 6 semesters" could very well mean before the end of the school year your junior year. So whatever date your school year ends, then time is up. Note: I am not saying that is how I read it, but that some could read it that way. 1 Quote
PLACfan Posted February 26, 2025 Posted February 26, 2025 Its a shame that we had leaders make a ruling like this "for the kids" and in the few days since this was released the ADULTS in this profession have taken it upon themselves to make this ruling about them. When a coach makes a blatant recruiting tweet, he did that for his gain. It's unfortunate that the adults involved have to make it about them. Quote
slicer28 Posted April 2, 2025 Posted April 2, 2025 HB 1064 is scheduled to come before the Senate Education and Career Development Committee this afternoon. Session is scheduled to start at 2 PM Eastern. Looks like there will be an amendment proposed to strip the language requiring schools to accept cash payments from the bill (basically remove what was added in the house). Quote

My initial thought was that it meant a player has up until the last day of his/her Junior school year. To keep it as a uniform date across the board it should be prior to Week 1 of the IHSAA Calendar. 1 Quote

I like your suggestion and the premise behind the rule (not having kids transfer right before senior year).....but....this first year, they need to let the current Juniors make the move. They can do it now or face the onslaught of litigation later. 1 Quote

The bill passed out of committee (amended to remove the cash payment requirement) 7-6 this afternoon. It will move to the full Senate next for second & third readings. If passed it will likely need to go to conference committee due to the difference in the bills passed. Third reading needs to be completed by 4/15. Quote

All signs indicate the bill will move along for the governor's signature later this month. Quote

HB1064 is scheduled for a concurrence vote in the House this morning. If the vote is successful, the bill, as amended by the Senate (where the cash requirement at school events was removed), will be sent to the governor for signature. Love it or hate it, it's pretty academic now. This will very likely become law, and restrictions for transfers between schools for athletic reasons will be stricken from state law. Quote
