temptation
Was having a drunken New Year’s Eve debate with some folks regarding the history of football recruiting in Indiana and specifically, the MIC. Spurred a quick project where I took a look at the best MIC recruits of the “star era” and this was the list (in order) of the top 25 recruits in the conference based on 247 sports. Just thought it was interesting and would spur some discussion. Apologize if I missed anyone. MIC Top 25: James Banks - BD (2002) Jerimy Finch - WC (2007) Caden Curry - CG (2022) Kiaro Holts - WC (2011) Sheldon Day - WC (2012) David Bell - WC (2019) Cam McGrone - LC (2018) Morgan Newton - CAR (2009) JB Paxson - CG (2005) Kris Harley - WC (2011) Austin Roberts - CAR (2014) Darrin Kirkland - LC (2015) Tim Kimbrough - WC (2013) Cole Brevard - CAR (2020) Asmar Bilal - BD (2015) Tayven Jackson - CG (2022) Joshua Mickens - LC (2023) MarQueis Gray - BD (2008) Darius Latham - NC (2013) Donaven McCulley - LN (2021) Dyjuan Lewis - PIKE (2010) (pre MIC) Dominique Booth - PIKE (2014) Beau Robbins - CAR (2019) Chris Graham - WC (2004) Brandon Lee - LC (2014) Edited January 2, 2022 by temptation

That was the first name I was looking through on that list for and was shocked to not see him in the Top 25. Obviously a lot of great athletes there, but that one got me the most. Just goes to show that recruiting rankings aren't everything. Sheldon Day has had a nice NFL career. Bell had a fantastic college career and should be a decade long player in the NFL assuming he stays healthy.

DE
When did the "star era" begin? I notice that James Banks is on there (02). I am struggling to come up with 25 D1 football players since 2002, from the DAC. Lake Central-Gelen Robinson-Purdue, Ike Spearman Ole Miss/Eastern Michigan Crown Point-Matt Ernest-IU, Kurt Wermers-Michigan/Ball St. , Andrew Krumweid-Army Merrillville-James Aldridge-ND, Dexter and Riley Larrimore-Ball St. and Ohio St., Kenneth Grant-Michigan, Eugene Wilson-Illinois, Dolopo McCarthy-Purdue Portage-Albert Evans-Purdue, Antoine Brown-Kentucjy Valparaiso-Jeff Smardzija-ND, Mike Dorulla-Ball St., John Hofer-Western Michigan Chesterton-Cartwright brothers (1 went to Miami Ohio and the other Western Michigan-don't know if they fall into the time frame) Michigan City-Brandon Fiske-Western Michigan LaPorte-? ***Players from each school, off the top of my head.*** Sorry if I missed anyone. I thought you might have included some subjective criteria to include their actual on field performance. Not disagreeing..just better understanding the criteria you used.

That same year, Clayton Richard, from McCutcheon, took the Mr. Football title and the following year finished his career as the #3 career passer although, since then, he has settled down around #6.
