Anyone have the rationale there for kicking a FG there to make a 2 TD game a 2 TD game? Even if ND makes it to cut the lead to 13, I saw nothing from ND's defense (or offense) up until that point which would have given me confidence that ND was going to a) stop OSU twice and b) lead two sustained TD drives at the juncture of the game.

a true mis step from Freeman there, tough to get the ball in air against OSU but still way better chance to score a TD there then to make it 13 and still have little time to get stops and 2 possesions and 2 touchdowns.

And to be fair ND did get a stop and then ended up scoring, but imagine had that 2 pt conversion been for the tie rather than to cut the lead to 8.

I'd love to see the numbers on that because even then I'm not sure it adds up, let alone once you take into account the common sense factor.

"Instead of being down 16, let's try to go down 13," Freeman said. "I know it's still a two-score game, but you have better -- a better probability of 14 points [sic] than you do 16 points. So, if it was a shorter fourth-and-goal situation, I probably would have gone for it but I just felt fourth-and-9 was not a great chance for us to make and I decided to kick it and we didn't make it."

I can understand the decision. To me it’s a pick ‘em. Ohio State’s ability to zone it up and match zone inside the 10 is just a huge problem for this ND offense at 4th and 9 from the nine. QB run is out at that point, and ND had just had three unsuccessful passing attempts in four plays. ND had its first real successes on long conversions on that drive so it’s frustrating, but they were able to stretch the field in a way that’s not possible inside the ten. We all saw what Ohio State did to Texas in the same situation in the Cotton Bowl.

The odds are against you either way, but scoring on 4th and 9 and getting three two point conversions in one game against this defense is just about as far out there as getting two more possessions in the first place.

I told some other friends when they asked, I said 31-17 myself OSU,  was not thrilled with the 2 pt conversion FINANCIALLY SPEAKING, but the gutsy fade to their DUDE who SHOULD be a top 10 pick THIS YEAR, a top 5 pick NEXT year and could very well be the #1 pick when he FINALLY gets to go to the NFL , he made the play and Howard delivered, however, the excitment I displayed FINACIALLY SPEAKING ONLY on that play not only got me into -8.5 range again, but also got over the HOWARD passing yards of 225, flannel man in beard at Station 21 was NOT a happy camper at me, to which I say, SORRY BOUT YA !!!!

Tremendous game plan early, but hard to go athlete on athlete with OSU  with the passing game limitations Leonard on ND offense has.   Kudos to the year they had, grinded out many games, power run game, great coaching, players who are easy to root for (Kiser, Bowen, Leanard, Love etc)    way too many NFL guys accross the 53 yards from ND sideline

Rivals

Changes things as anyone should agree

one could say OSU played better becasue of that loss to Michigan, tighened things up if you will.

Perhaps Michigan had a better and healthier Offensive line to be able to be successful where ND was lacking in that department.

Only my guesses, did not watch the entire game of OSU/Michigan

Wait, so the Michigan/OSU rivalry brings out things that the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP game doesn’t?

Hatred yes the Emotion of learned hatred that is not necessarily involved when 2 teams meet in a National Title game.

Doesn't mean I feel like OSU players would rather beat Michigan vs winning A Natty.

Simply put:  Ryan Day loses his mind for 3+ hours every time he plays Michigan.

Hope he stays.

Pretty good Irish representation on both sides of the ball.

BTW, I received good news from my cardiologist today.  It seems some tests I've had to endure have paid off and I'm relatively heart healthy for a person of my age.  I guess God isn't ready for me yet.
