This interesting story from the Fighting Irish Daily Facebook page:

"PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY." Notre Dame doesn't make a dime off it.

All the rights money goes in the pocket of the little sign painter who made it -- Laurie Wenger. "I have MS," says Wenger, who retired from Notre Dame in 2009 but still lives in South Bend. "So it really helps pay my medical bills."

How a simple sign painter has made all that money off Notre Dame starts with Lou Holtz.

He was the new football coach at Notre Dame in 1986 when he was leafing through an old football picture book and saw a black-and-white picture of a sign that said, "Play Like a Champion Today." He had to have one.

He dispatched one of his assistant coaches, George Stewart, to the campus sign shop. "Coach wants something like this painted up ASAP," Stewart said, handing Wenger a piece of paper.

It took about three days. When she finished, she closed her eyes, said a quick prayer and rushed it over to the football office. Prayer answered. Holtz loved it and had it hung on the wall of a narrow staircase leading to the field.

"I told my players, 'Every time you hit this sign, I want you to remember all the great people that played here before you, all the sacrifices that your teammates have made for you, all the people, your coaches, your parents, who are responsible for you being here.'"

Since that day, some of the greatest players in Notre Dame history have touched it -- from Tim Brown to Rocket Ismail to Manti Te'o, Holtz believed in the sign so much that he had Laurie make another one and took it with him to road games. It became so screwed into Notre Dame lore that you'd think George Gipp had slapped it, too.

"People think that sign has been up there since Christ was in diapers," Wenger says. "But, really, it's only been about 25 years."

Right away, somebody wanted a copy -- Rudy Ruettiger. Yes, that Rudy, from the movie of the same name, although that came seven years later. "I thought, 'Wow, this guy is into it," she says. "And then my husband thought, 'If he wants it, maybe other people would want it." So her husband set out to get it trademarked.

"We checked to see if we could have the rights, and the school said 'Well, it doesn't say "Notre Dame" on it, so go ahead.'"

It's nearly as famous as the Golden Dome, and, as it has turned out, worth almost as much.

Another instance of a QB being tackled, and it's flagged as "roughing!"  I believe in protecting the QB, but the "roughing" penalties are getting out of hand, at all levels!

The Irish have totally exposed Navy today.  The Midshipmen turned the ball over 6 times, it would have been 7 without the "roughing" call.  It has been the best game the Irish have played so far, on both sides of the ball.

The score with 2 to go is 51-14.  That's the final.

That season-opening win against Texas A & M is starting to look pretty good.

There's going to be a slew of one loss teams this year vying for at large bids versus some well deserving two loss teams as well. It's going to be complicated. How do you say no to the Big Twelve runner-up if they lose a close one in the championship game? Anyone in their right mind knows that it has to be done though.

I can foresee situations - such as upsets in conference championship games - where a 1 loss ND is on the outside looking in. This may be the year it finally dawns on them that the absence of a conference championship on their resume is a real obstacle to overcome, even with a 12 team playoff.

Agree. The way they are currently playing, you and I both know they are probably Top 8 let alone Top 12. They won't be denied with one loss, but some well deserving one loss teams are going to be upset at the end of the day. Alabama already has two losses, but no one's in a hurry to bet on Iowa State or BYU beating them.

But Northern Illinois lost to Ball State.  That isn't going to help the Irish resume any.

That loss can’t get any worse.

NIce W for the Irish.  I thought the game would be much closer...I was mistaken.

Yeah, I thought it was to be another grinder, as usual.  The Irish seem to be getting it together.  It's a shame they lost to NIU.  Now NIU is 4-4 and lost to Ball State yesterday.

I can't wait to get back in the stands Friday night!

And this morning that win over Louisville is also looking better, as the Cardinals went in to Clemson and made Dabo cry!

Notre Dame has so many impressive wins now over quality opponents, I think NIU is becoming a non-factor. Of course if they blow one of these games then they are out.

So many impressive wins? Yesterday, TAMU lost by 24 to South Carolina and Navy lost to Rice by 2 TD’s. Rice fired their coach on Monday. Louisville is a nice win that looks better after yesterday.

Northern Illinois is now 4-4 with a 1-3 record in the MAC, there is no escaping that. ND is going to benefit from a soft schedule to end the year and a bunch of conference teams beating up on each other these next few weeks.

Not saying I disagree, but Notre Dame is about the run the table against the eleven best teams on their schedule. Pretty much got to ignore the NIU loss in terms of how good Notre Dame is. Of course it won't be ignored if ND loses again. I'm not sure going 12-0 vs 11-1 is going to have much impact on where ND is placed in the playoffs.

Riley Leonard has to stay consistent, that means he has to do what he does best, and that's the short pass, with an occasional long one to keep the defense honest, and continue to run the ball when it's open.  The Irish defense seems to be getting stronger, especially in the back end.  Xavier Watts has had another outstanding season so far and he needs to keep it going.  Lots of crazy things happening in this CFB season.

I sent this clip to @WolvesOnTheProwl who told me that him and brother snuck into the game........can't wait to hear this one

I took my 9 yr. old daughter to that game — her first. They had her at the flyover.
