I’m sure you realize that the finalists in the 6A game the last two seasons have both been from what would be your small 6A group. So much for the hypothesis that schools from the bottom half of 6A can’t compete with the top half.

The best version of yourself might be more concerned with finding a great fit for your little ones in school and the community you would like to seem them grow up in or a great church that is a fit or an administration that fully supports you or a community that supports the program in everyway or a feeder system that doesn't need an overhaul or perhaps proximity to grandparents matters. This list isn't all inclusive. That said I do think the list is a nice acknowledgment of what all these fine coaches are doing. Thanks for putting it together. I am a professional myself and I can tell tell you keeping my kids in the South Gibson School Corporation has cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars with regard to my own work. Best decision I ever made.

These two things are mutually exclusive IMO. I understand your point above, and I can certainly agree when talking about college or pro jobs. There is nothing wrong with climbing the latter if you so choose, but the relationships are the best part of coaching. Some lose their way or become burned out constantly bouncing around. If you invest your heart, communities have a way of making you one of their own. You get to see first hand the impact you make on and off the field. There is no hall of fame or internet clout I'd trade that for, and I can speak the same for a lot of my coaching colleagues. This is a great list of leaders, I wish them nothing but the best whatever they choose.

Not sure how you gauge the "best in the State" as far as design and play calling; unless someone has access to a LOT of video and time to watch. I can think of 4 off the top of my head that I would consider among the best I have ever coached with or against. But the fact is that we put WAY too much on how good a coach is to a team's record; completing discounting the ability level of the dudes putting the pads on every day.

Just curious as to what it is that he's not getting? And please, something other than "common sense" or "if you can't see it ..." The last decade, the following teams have made it to LOS in 6A: Carmel Penn Snider Warren Central Ben Davis Center Grove Westfield Lawrence Central Using a Division I / Division II split: Carmel - Div I Penn - Div I Snider - Div II, but now 5A Warren Central - Div I Ben Davis - Div I Center Grove - Div II Westfield - Div II Lawrence Central - Div II Toss in Zionsville moving up to 6A as well as likely Cathedral on SF ... both of which would be Div II ... and I bet you are likely to see something like Center Grove, Westfield, Zionsville, Cathedral, and perhaps Lawrence Central doing the rotation in Div II on a regular basis. Of course the one thing that will likely grow is the number of post-season threads as there will be a least "plus one" discussing how Cathedral is unfairly "slumming" in 6A Div II. Also, the discussion of Center Grove's demise is likely to be less-accelerated if they don't have to worry about navigating Lawrence North, Warren Central, North Central, Ben Davis, Carmel, or Brownsburg in post-season. Similarly, Westfield has an easier post-season not having to navigate Hamilton Southeastern, Penn, and Fishers.

It’s funny how quick cycles can turn. I recall Chatard playing Dwenger in 2012 and the game went down very much like the Chatard/Columbus East game this Fall. The Dwenger faithful were lamenting that it was over for Dwenger and they would never be good again. The very next year in 2013 they played within a point of an Olympian team in the State game. An Olympian team that I considered one of the best 5 teams in the State (All Classes). I was expecting East to be back to form next Fall and looked forward to seeing it. Add that I have some real memories from my last visit there…it was the first time I broke 2:00 and I passed out after getting out-leaned at the finish line. The next day I had to take the SAT on about 2 hours sleep. Curious what it would look like all these years later.

I think the OP meant just QB. The announcers on the game stated tallest QB ever in college football (or something to that effect).

I don’t want to slight anyone, as my memory isn’t as good as it used to be. So, I’m undoubtedly leaving some very fine coaches out. But the others that come immediately to mind are Mark Hoffman at Valpo and Craig Buzea when he was at Portage.

Agreed! These kind of lists always makes me wonder what would the GID look like in the mid-90s. Jerry Brewer and Bob Clayton. Will they get bored winning against their competition and step up to coach an Indy school? No way do the up and coming coaches Mike Goebel and Reed May spend their careers at one school. HS football coaches don’t think like fans (that’s a good thing) and always look for the next big thing.

This may come as a shock to some… but many coaches look for a forever home and just stay. It’s not always about the next biggest thing. Lots of the coaches on this list may never leave their current home. Life is about what’s right for you…not what others think is right for you. Even for a coach, there are lots of things in life more important than the profession itself, and what these things might be are as individual as a finger print.

Meh for such a minor comment you sure want to make it bigger than what it is im calling a spade for a spade…he’s the best play caller/play designer in the state. And like anyone who is great at that, they leave opposing defensive coordinators guessing and rattle their head. football is as much a mental game as it is a physical game…and I would like to think the people behind the headsets on Friday nights are just as important for winning as the talent on the field.
