This took me to the Google machine and the only "data" on this topic is that 89% of the players drafted in the 2022 draft played multiple sports in High School and 88% in 2017. Prior to hitting Google, I would have guessed that 5% of NFL players on active rosters are "football only" guys. Given that 89% of players drafted in a given year, and 88% in another, were multi-sport athletes AND only 30% of players drafted make a 53 man roster, I think that 5% number is probably closer to 0-1%. @First_Backer_Inside with a near perfect "guess." 4x100 gets all the attention, but the 4x400 is the best. Last event of the night, kids get hyped for it (or the fact that when it's over they get to go home), and it's a test of who's got the toughest 4 sprinters on the track. Great event. Sadly in our area, so many kids find track to be "boring" and would rather not do anything in the spring. It's maddening honestly. I don't know how many times I have told kids that if you aren't going to run track, at least play baseball, but more often than not it seems like it falls on deaf ears. If nothing else, the fact that kids are going out and learning how to compete in those spring sports is value added in and of itself, to say nothing of the physical carry over effects.2 points

North Judson encourages their football players to be in multiple sports. Their coaches don't just talk-the-talk but they walk-the-walk. Head Coach Lambert is also the head track coach. D-coordinator Coach McGowen is the head wrestling coach and track assistant coach. Assistant Coach Harper is the head baseball coach. Assistant Coach Hampton is the head golf coach and assistant basketball. Needless to say the football players find a way to lift weights 12 months of the year.2 points

This is why they left. Nothing to do with competition, they were just being proactive.1 point

I personally think the Terre Haute schools were trying to get ahead by not allowing themselves to be at the mercy of the other Conference Indiana schools. The writing was on the wall when the Mid-State Conference accepted Bloomington North as its newest member. With five CI schools left, you have to decide whether you’re going to get out before it all crashes down on you or if you’re going to sit on your hands and let others beat you to the punch by getting out. The Terre Haute schools decided to be proactive so they found a conference willing to take them in instead of putting themselves in a desperate situation down the road where they may not have had any conferences looking for new members.1 point

The constant moving of schools to the various conferences is enough to make one's head spin. From a football standpoint, the TH schools are not a good fit for any conference since they have been noncompetitive for the most part in CI in that sport with TH South occasionally coming up with a big win. TH North was strong in basketball the past couple of seasons and promise to be strong next season. TH South hasn't been all that competitive in basketball for the past few seasons. So, I wonder if those schools wanted to get away from Bloom South and Columbus North in what you would call the "money" sports at the high school level. That's just me trying the get a handle on the move with some speculation.1 point

Truthfully, I wish I did have more. Pricing it out, I can’t see bleachers costing 7 million around the south end. Yes it is a lot of bleachers, but that could nearly fund a complete renovation of the bowl. I’ll ask around and see what I can find, but I would almost bet the bowl gets a lighting upgrade as well. However, that isn’t as exciting as new bleachers.1 point

I think Columbus North is the one that should be independent in football. They are 6A and would not benefit, at all, playing in the HHC.... they already play East, Floyd/CN should be a thing moving forward.. .go from there. Floyd should highly look into scheduling them.1 point

Same could be said for kids that don't do anything in the winter. If you don't do anything, go wrestle. Most times a tackle in football is a double leg takedown. Kids think football coaches want to hear "I'm a football guy all year round, that's all I do and focus on". The fact is it's darn near impossible to practice football all year round. If you want to be a football guy all year round, you wrestle and run track. Or basketball and Baseball. Or swim and golf(yikes). But hey at least you are doing something. I have a hunch any guy playing in the NFL today, wasn't just a football player in high school. Just a guess.1 point

BNL Update: The coach from Texas (Steven Stanley from Liberty Christian HS) has officially turned it down. BNL offered, he said he needed more money, BNL got it to his asking price, but then he ended up turning it down after all. Disappointing. The rumor is that it is down to two local candidates, and at least one of the two has been brought back in for a 2nd interview this week. I know girls basketball interviews are taking place this week as well, so not sure on the timetable. I do not envy first year AD Adam Yates this week. A lot on his plate to say the least!1 point

Maybe a temporary grouping of Bloomington South, Southport, Columbus North, and Center Grove could help with schedules until a more permanent home could be found. If Franklin Central leaves the HCC, I think Center Grove takes the 8th spot in that conference pretty quickly. I could see Franklin Central and Southport then joining the MIC to bring that conference back to 8 members. That leaves Bloomington South and Columbus North searching for somewhere to go, which could be the Hoosier Hills. That conference would fit them both well. I think New Castle may be leaving the Hoosier Heartland soon, and Delta would probably jump with them. Shelbyville is already leaving that conference, so the remaining 5 members (if Yorktown stays) might be looking for some schools to join them. Pendleton Heights, Mount Vernon, Greenfield-Central, and New Palestine are all growing, but the drive to Bloomington and Columbus is probably a deterrent to joining a conference with those schools. The move by the Terre Haute schools to the Sagamore Conference is probably a good choice. Competitively, it’s a pretty good fit. They will have some long drives to Lafayette, but it’s really not much longer than going to Columbus. Better to move to a conference by choice now than to stay where they are and eventually be left behind.1 point

Why do these school board members think it is acceptable to spend this amount of money on an unneeded extravagance like a football stadium? I would be ok with this if it was funded by private donations, but they are spending money confiscated from their hard working fellow citizens! When does the fiscal malfeasance from local school boards come to an end? Will it take mass protests?1 point

I guess I’m just struggling to understand why they can’t just go independent in football only. They should remove themselves from the conference so everyone else plays five games each to determine a conference champion (no imbalanced schedule). At the same time, they can play every HHC team (sans New Albany) unless they are able to mutually agree with HHC teams to schedule new opponents, if available. If you’re not fully committed to being in the conference then why not just leave or why not have the conference remove them? I understand it’s better for Jennings County and the bigger HHC teams to end their series and move on but let’s not pretend a game with Jennings County is a conference game if this is the route we’re going.1 point

Sheridan had a 2-year deal with South Adams and Sheridan's AD backed out of her contract. Sheridan said they wanted to guarantee a win for the first year head coach.0 points
