  1. At our scrimmage we didn't have any issues with the above points of emphasis.
  2. In response to what Bob said above I think is extremely important to "control what you can control". Our crew too has been disappointment by lack of advancement for many many years (started our crew in 2008). We were observed week 1 in 2016. Our observer was completely honest with us. He said our crewed was over weight at certain positions and that we appeared to be slow because of the weight some of our guys carried. So you know what I did, I went and looked at our films. That game and of every game throughout the year. We did look slow, we were out of position at times. I challenged our crew. I said, "if you want to get to the promise land, we need to change our perception of being slow". So that summer our crew made 1 personnel change and 2 other guys lost a combined 125 lbs. It hurt at the time to hear what the observer said, we were pissed and we moaned about it for weeks. We complained about other crews and how far they were advancing. But in hind sight, it was exactly what we needed to hear. The following year we were observed and received excellent reviews. I continued to break down every game. And I don't mean looking back to see if we got the calls right or wrong, I'm talking about watching every play. Looking at mechanics, looking at positioning, looking at our eyes, where our focus is / where it should be. Controlling the things we can control: preparation, fitness, hustle, and appearance/perception. Challenge yourself and your crew. Even if you don't care about the tournament, it will bring yourself satisfaction to know you are doing everything in your control to officiate to best of your ability on any given Friday night.
  3. Is there a separate thread to post the 5a score from tonight? I'm teasing. 🤓😎😜
  4. I had heard a rumor that this year, due to COVID, the stadium may need to be emptied between each contest. Any truth to this?
  5. K can not advance a kick. Once the ball was possessed by R, K can advance. In the play described, R possessed it, then fumbled allowing for K to advance for a touchdown. Correct ruling. If R would have muffed the kick, thus not securing possession, by definition the kick would not had ended and k would not have been able to advance after recovery. Now the question back is: was the play ever blown dead prior to K crossing the goal line, because then we would have an IW and it changes the result of the play.
  6. Now that's funny right there. Funny and true.
  7. Also bring in the aspect of officiating. If the officiating crew is told they also need to quarantine for 14 days because the school's, county's, local health official's policy is to mandate quarantine for those who have been in contact with a student who has tested positive. Can the officiating community afford to take 14 days off of their real life job to make $70-$80 on a Friday night. Just thoughts to ponder.
  8. While mixing and matching does sound fun. It also sounds scary. There are officials in this state who merely pay their dues and show up to games unprepared. Then there are those have been attending the IFOA webinars, local association meetings, and get into the rule book on a daily basis. Be careful who you choose to work with. I recall a few years ago, I worked a Saturday make up rain out game from Friday night at the local HS. Showed up 1.5 hrs prior to the game as did 3 other guys I hadn't worked with, perfect... we had a pregame amongst ourselves, discussed keys, positions and plays. Then 5 mins before kickoff showed up our 5th. He was dressed, in sweatpants and a metal pea-whistle (no disrespect to those who still use pea-whistles). Let's just say I had a lot of explaining to do to the coaches on that evening. Live ball false start penalties. Dead Ball illegal formation penalties. Unfamiliar keys and mechanics. So to coaches and fans reading this... remember it's not always the White hats fault.
  9. I wasn't there, but if the hold was 10 yards from the interception spot and the intercepting team returned it beyond the spot of the foul, then the 10 yard holding penalty would coincidently take the ball back to the place the ball was originally intercepted. I'm not sure that's what happened, just providing some insight.
  10. I'm confused by his use of O and D especially calling them O and D linemen, on kicking plays most refer to the teams as K and R. Who blocked who in the back and if it was 30-35 yards behind the play, was he a defenseless player and needed to be called, or was it more of a light nudge and could have been passed on?
  11. Quick response as I'm sure others will be able to send you a complete copy of the rules. In NFHS, there is not a "halo rule" and K can NEVER advance a kick. A muff does not meet the definition of when a kick ends. K would get the ball at the spot of recovery.
  12. Mooresville does, not sure the cost outweighs the benefit, but they are nice.
  13. I want to send a THANK YOU to whomever needs to be thanked and say that change is good in this case. I'm guessing the IHSAA has caught wind of this message board with regards to how the communication to officials from the IHSAA regarding their interpretations have been inconsistent over the past 4 weeks. Today I received an e-mail from the IHSAA stating: "As we move to the middle portion of the season please be advised of issues noted by our Observers and I during the first 4 weeks of the season. Previously, these communications have gone through your Association Chair, however, I felt communicating directly with Crew Chiefs would work just as well. Please note the following:" This is a welcomed change and I appreciate the move towards better communication to the men and women in stripes from the IHSAA.
  14. Pay disparity is a real thing in Indiana with respects to varsity football officiating. I've seen as high as $110 and as low as $65 (this year, in 2019).
  15. Bob- I'm going to respectfully disagree with you on this. There is nowhere in the rule book that says one rule trumps another. The option for a state association to adopt a running clock is clearly addressed in rule 3-1-2; The option to shorten a period is clearly addressed in rule 3-1-3. They don't conflict with each other and one doesn't trump the other. I also respectfully disagree with your comment that the IHSAA has been "very clear". There have been numerous posters on here who have not seen the communication that you are referencing.
  16. Same exact way I read the rule. And supposedly there is an interpretation out there by the IHSAA clarifying, but as you may have read throughout this thread, only select individuals have actually received the e-mail.
  17. I'm the white hat and crew chief on my crew and still have yet to receive the above mentioned email via the IHSAA or football chair of the two associations of which I belong.
  18. It truly is an unfortunate situation for the student athletes, fans, and administration of both of these schools.
