SoIndRef Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 I may have received some conflicting information. I feel like at a clinic or an association meeting I attended we were told the coin toss was to be conducted with the coaches instead of team captains. Perhaps I misunderstood, but I was confused at the time. Quote

Is it to just speed the process up? This is a new change, correct? Will captains be called as usual, or has that been omitted? I'm certain this will be a surprise to some folks. Quote
0 Bobref Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 Captains still come out for the mock toss. Quote

0 Impartial_Observer Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 So I worked an 8th grade game last night between two first year MS teams. The coach that won the toss said he wanted to KO, I just said, no, you’re deferring. 3 Quote

I ever tried correcting the coach and he insisted he knew what he wanted to do. Boy was he in for a surprise with the second half started. Quote

It was a change in 2020 with the COVID changes and it has not been changed. Apparently the state likes it and probably has feedback from the coaches to keep it. If you are still doing the old method with captains, you have been wrong for a few years. 1 Quote

OK, what I saw in a game now makes sense. For OT, the coaches went out for the coin toss. I didn't realize that the captains meeting at the beginning of the game was a reenactment. Quote
0 rob Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 Yeah, I was told that you didn't want the coach mad at the kid for making a bad decision or miscommunicating. Or, blaming his poor decision on the kid. Quote

It has been that way since I started officiating 35 years ago. The current pregame procedure is the best - as has been mentioned by others here. There's a lot less drama when we do the pregame toss with the head coaches. Quote
