I want to hear other voices and delve into the data further. I think that 5A and 6A may be overrepresented because there is such a fall of between the top teams and the average teams. Some deeper statistical analysis would factor in that anomaly... I need to do my homework or need input from a resident statistican.

Not having 2001-2004 Chatard, Heritage Hills, Danville and Andrean in the 3A top 25 is a head scratcher for me.

The question for me is: How much better is the average team in 2024 than 1999? One way to account for this would be to look at the IN HS Track and Field records over the years to see how much better athletics in the state has become.

Not having the 2015 Gibson Southern Titans is a head scratcher for me....should not have lost to Chatard and was the number 2 sagarin 3A team that season.

@hhpatriot04 A little surprised 2017 Gibson Southern is in the 3A Top 25 (#16), but the 2017 3A state champs (Ev. Memorial) aren't, especially when Ev. Memorial beat Gibson Southern in the Sectional final.

I am as well....the 2015 Titans were quite a bit better than 2017 and didn't make the math.

What consitute an all time rate?    Local I assume?   Based on the link here, the last record at state was broken in 1984, I am not sure you were even born then, I was 5 years old btw

Track and field is sorta weird when it comes to records…as there are “state meet records” which MUST be achieved at the state finals, and all-time “state records” which are unofficial but can be set at anytime.

Mike Slabaugh is a professor from the Fort Wayne area and a track and field nut/guru.

He keeps tabs on the sports better than anyone at the local (Indiana) level.

His work can be seen here:

https://users.pfw.edu/slaubau/alltimeindex.htm

In the 15 standard boys events, 10 records have been set since the turn of the century while, 11 have for the girls (girls pole vault is still in its relative infancy.)

What about 2001 BD?

James Banks…man…my biggest woulda, coulda, shoulda ever.

That BD squad was legit but had a couple of nail biters.

Third best BD team in school history in my opinion (1991 and 2017) and I mean that as no disrespect.

@BDGiant93 has spoken on this topic numerous times but I forget his opinion.

2013 Tri-Central Trojans.  14-1.  1A State Champions defeating Eastern Hancock, the one team that had defeated them in the first game of the season.  Also the one state title for Hall of Fame Coach George Gilbert.

I think you're spot on with your assessment.

Banks was the best HS player I ever saw play in person...and I've seen some good ones.

Where's Desmond Tardy rank?

Best all around high school players I've seen are Ryan Baker of Chatard and Jay Cutler (perhaps Jett Goldsberry after this season).

The thing about Banks was he was so dominant in every phase of the game O, D, Specials.  And as a QB his impact was much more significant.  And against the state's best.

Tardy may have the single best individual game performance that I have ever seen when the the level of competition and the stage is factored in but Banks was just on another level.

All three phases for James.  As well as two other sports.  Was a state champion in track and field.

Snider's 400 relay 2004, not surprised. A healthy Quale Lewis puts that Snider team in the Top 20 all time.

What was their 4x100 time?

People don't realize that James was not only an amazing quarterback and defensive back, but he also was ranked like fifth in 5A in punting.

Oh to have made that FG in 2005 vs Jimtown.........Or not be a yard Out of Bounds for the win in OT, or to not have our starting S suspended 2 days before........

That 2005 Bomber team was the real deal led by QB and 3rd in Mr. Football voting Jake Kiger

So it goes

Lewis Cass would have liked another crack at that Jimtown team as well. Game was back and forth for the most of the first half. Cass picked Jimtown off in the end zone early in the game. Instead of taking a knee in the end zone, kid thinks he's going 100 yards for a pick 6. Didn't make it 5 yards out of the end zone before he was stripped from behind and Jimtown recovered with a fresh set of downs inside the 10. Flipped the game completely, and Cass never recovered. That Cass team had some studs too. Garrett Seagraves was a Prime Time 26 player in the state. I believe he was only a junior at the time. Cass head football coach Clay Mannering was a senior on that semistate team.

They had Kitt and another 6'6+ 300+ monster in Jake Rouch too, who I believe played at Marian. Pioneer played Cass week 1 and they just stonewalled the Panthers. That was the biggest pair of interior linemen I've ever seen at this level, too.

2006 Warren is DISrespected.

You've got to take Sagarin with a grain of salt. I think it's a better measure in college and pro. All bets are off in high school. At the end of the day, they'll be remembered as a state champion, and that's all that matters. It's just not possible for a flawed system like Sagarin to accurately predict the best teams of all time. Good Lord, where do I begin to unpack all this. Some will argue that Sagarin is pretty accurate toward the end of the season, and quite frankly, I think he does a solid job, but probably only about 90% accurate. But to predict teams from year to year? C'mon. This whole thing is nonsense.

Not having a single Zachery-led Sheridan team makes this list a complete farce.

Yes, it was Marian. Probably could have played at a higher level than that too. The 2019 team was good for Cass that made the 2A list, but hard to believe they were better than the '05 and '08 teams. A case could be made for the '06 team too. Got bounced by Heritage in a mud pit game second round of sectionals. Had some great battles with Heritage and Harding back in the 2000's.

Cass had a ton of great teams under Scott Mannering, as I'm sure you're aware. It seemed like every single team was a contender, at one point, and their depth was always fantastic. 3rd and 4th quarters were gut check time against a good Cass team, as Mannering and company continued to send in fresh legs into the backfield and wear out opposing defenses.

Fun fact, I worked in the Indiana Department of Correction for a decade and I remember that Rouch briefly worked there for a few months.  I was told that he had been laid off from his normal job. He was sporting a mohawk and fit in well there.

If the 2006 Warren team isn't near the top, then I don't know what to tell you. That team was brutally talented. They beat the #2 team in the state (Ben Davis) 76-7, and it should have been worse.

C'mon, it's fun for pretend. Hard to take seriously though. So many flaws with Sagarin to put any stock in this.

Curious....do you have a better source?
