Is it just me or has this year been the year of a lot more blow outs and I just don’t mean a team losing by 35 late in the game to go to a running clock but teams having the run clock hit By half and truth it could have been started in the middle of the 2 quarter in some cases

what I was trying to say is. 
This year is seem there has been a lot of blow outs. More so then years past, not sure if I am the only to notice this and do we this think is a trend to continue or just a weird thing going on this year?

Reminds me of my 7th grade year...team went 0-8 and we didn't score a point.  2 TD's called back my penalties....on the same guy.  Student body named us the "The Zips".

Following year, same crew went 6-2.  The best part, we won our first game 2-0 on a safety....a total of 9 games without scoring a TD!!

Maybe its cyclical? Young teams are getting hammered by the vets of friday nights? To think a teams jv is still scoring points with a running clock is wild though! It does hurt a program when feeder schools are on the sidelines watching their team get the biz.. IMO coaches are not as humble with their play-calling either when up by a bunch. Either padding stats or trying for style points..either way is probably bad especially with schools opening up flag football.. Loved reading how the Penn program would ask the ref for penalties when up by 35.

Per Harrell's data (what a blessing that guy is), this year has the highest average point spread of any season since 1994.  Interestingly, the introduction of the "mercy rule" with a running clock starting with the 2019 season didn't slow down the trend of increasing spreads.

By my count there are 36 teams out there currently at 0-5.  That's a little over 10% of the IHSAA football playing schools.

Was the running clock to cut down on scoring spread, or just to let people go home earlier?  Generally, once teams get the running clock, they sub out their starters anyway.

The idea was obviously to speed up lopsided games, but even with that logic the spreads are increasing with a shorter game.  I think in many cases there is a push to get to a 35 point lead as quickly as possible.  That logic may be pushing the spreads higher as teams don't go conservative until they have at least a 35 point lead.  Or in some cases they will score as much as possible before the clock starts running in the 2nd half.

Without seeing the line scores, it's hard to see how teams are scoring in the 70's and 80's with the running clock. Maybe a good chunk of those points are coming in the first half. It's almost sad looking at the scores of some of these teams. Cambridge City has not won more than one game since 2015. Those came against either Union County or Union City, two schools that have similar records in recent years.
